Great,,, thanks again

Today I maxed out my Throttle curve to 100-95-90-95-100 and the rotor head speed is now 3300.

It flies even better now.. I can't beleive how well it handles strong wing and turbulence - it is too windy to fly my fixed wings today.  20 -25 kt winds..

I've got the gyro and tail servo nicely tuned now..

Todays flying...

Peter,

Since I'm pretty proud of it, here's my 450 so you can see how I ran my wiring. Notice that my 450 has coaxial parts on it?

Simply stunning mate

Pgroom,
I have the same bird, except my clone has a metal body, but all the other parts are all well machined - you can't see tool marks unless you look REALLY close, and the tail slider is very smooth. I have flown both belts and torque tubes, and I (I'm definately not a suprer hot 3D guy - my clone get's flown fairly sedately, with a few rolls thrown in. It looks AWESOME with the graphite frame though - for the price, I don't think you can beat it. I got my Align here for a price that I would never be able to beat, considering it came with 3 sets of 6 cell Lipos.) - The price of those batteries is more than the RTF clone costs!

I don't understand why I'm catching flack for wanting to upgrade my bird - I simply wanted to know if it could be done, not should I do it.

There's a clone TT assembly for about $45 shipped with a "make offer" option. Though having read the other thread, if your intention is to make the tail slider smoother you'd be better off buying something like this.

I have the GT and also a V2 which has a metal body and lots of plastic..

I fly both equally now, over 70 flights each and the only difference I can tell is one is flown on a Spektrum DX6i and one is on a Futaba 6EX..

It every respect they fly exactly the same.

There was one minor variation when setting up.. the V2 has a plastic tail and I had to balance the tail rotors to avoid vibration with Stunt Mode selected.

The GT has a metail tail and it balanced perfectly out of the box..

Perhaps time will prove the all metal on the GT head to be more duable but for now they are on par...

Does the TT make any difference?  I am awaiting delivery of a HK450 Pro TT..which I hope to have flying by the end of this week.. but any tips about TTs would be appreciated..

Hey guys..

Had a great day flying today, flying literally all day.. managed 36 flights between my two 450 clones..

Mother of GOD! I am just happy to get 7 in on my two galz! Must be nice!

I'm really loving them..

I have upped the rotor RPM to around 3200 now and removed the flybar weights on both.. WOW what nimble little buggers they are now!

Um yeah, mine get too twichy for me but I think yer skill level is SLIGHTY above that of mine!

2 things I learned today..

1. If an ant crawls into your eye under the sunglasses and starts biting you... ignore it... be a MAN and accept the pain.. your heli is too valuable to risk.... ( I landed my heli first then killed that nasty little sucker!)

Been there, done that with both a sneeze today and an ant biting my ankle. Just toughed it up!

2. If a Magpie swoops and attacks you from the behind hope that you are not in the middle of landing (I was lucky.. I was at 30 feet and there was plenty of room to recover from the ''unexpected'' control inputs caused by acts of self defense...

I get a LOT of dive bombing directly at my helis by dragon flys! I actually sustained damage to my wiring by ingesting same!

Just wanted to post something I noticed today for you Peter, make sure you loctite each and every nut and bolt.. I thought I had done so but after todays flying I noticed I must have missed one and yes, it was gone..

Now fixed and loctited...

When I take delivery of a heli. I completly disassemble every screw and Loctite same. If it is a screw that attaches to plastic. I medium strength with CA!

Also something I just did yesterday, I used hot glue to strengthen the aerials where they exit the RX... I was worried they would end up breaking from vibrating in the airflow..

Pic below..

Rob - I really do think that the TT is smoother, but the comment about stripping gears is a valid one. And thanks for the Ebay tip - that TT looks like a winner at that price, as does the KDS slider.

That movie above is AWESOME! That climb out is incredible - are you sure that's a 450 and not the 500? I was thinking of for the next bird a graphite framed 500 - a bit more money, but not that much. I've never seen one in person but have read that they are impressively larger than the 450.

Yes, I'm hoping the TT will be smoother..The heli in the video is definately the 450 GT...  Its the one in the foreground in the pic below.  the back one is a $29 Exi from Nitroplanes.. Its flies great also..

I put the comment in my video about it being "about a meter long" mainly for the benefit of my mum and dad back in Sydney..  they have only ever seen me fly the MSR in person so I wanted them to understand the 450 is MUCH bigger..

(the MSR is small enough to fit in my overnight bag and goes everywhere with me... )

The pic was taken before I put the electrics in the GT and installed the CF blades...

It is just an addiction now.. I have already flown 9 times this morning and just came in for breakfast...

I love your shark nose canopies,  they look great... I just ordered a few coloured canopies from Hobbyking..

But my wife likes it plain white - she calls it "The Stormtrooper"

Hi All,

At the risk of going a little off topic I'm very pleased to report that a firmware hack is close to being published for the #3 keychain cam to remove the horrible flickering yellow timestamp.  Roger M. the guy who figured this out is putting together the instructions atm.

I've done applied the firmware hack to mine & wow!  Much better (if like me you hated the timestamp).  Video of my HK-450GT whilst I try out the modded cam.

Simon

ps.  It also works for the related gum cams

Hey Simon,

Thanks for the tip re the key camera, I have the V3 so I will definately use it..

Nice smooth flying mate.. and what a great backdrop.. I wish I could fly in my back yard like that..

I built my HK450 Pro last night.. it took 9 hours and I have it all on time lapse video here

Its a nice heli but it was frustrating installing the electrics as the body frame is much narrower than the 450GT

Everything was a tight squeeze and routing the servo wires was almost an IQ test.. but I managed to get it all together..

It is nicely balanced and tracked now.. just awaiting a Gyro and tail servo from Hobbyking..

My set up is

Turnigy Typhoon 2215 motor with 11T pinion (gives around 2900rpm headspeed )
40 Amp Hobbywing Pentium ESC - stays totally cool even after 5 mins at full power
Cyclic Servos Hitech HS65 MG
Gyro HK 401
Tail Servo Futaba S9257
Futaba 6EX 2.4ghz radio with a 617FS RX
Carbon Fibre Blades from Hobbyking (same as on Stormtrooper - they balanced perfectly out of the box, both times.)

Here are some pics ,,, the new brother for Bubba (EXI 450) and Stormtrooper (450GT)

Hi Rob,

Wrt the #3 keychain cam, if you pm me your email address I can forward you the instructions as they stand.  A chap on RCGroups has followed them with success.  Please note it does not work with Windows 7, but XP seems fine.

I love your time lapse video & pics   I'm interested in this heli so I will be interested in your flight comments.

As for the back yard flying - Thanks!  Here's another

I'm just waitng on a HK 401 Gyro which should arrive tomorrow or Thursday at the latest.. will maiden it then..

It seems really nice and about the same quality as the 450 GT. I will do a more detailed review of it after flying...

One thing.. the canopy was very badly distorded by packing and was interfering with the main gear..

I found the best way to re shape it was just run it under very hot water for a few seconds.. then it became extremely malleaible..

I just held it in the desired shape and let it cool for a few minutes... It is now PERFECT..

Morning Simon,
Coupla observations:
1) Man yer getting good at snapping that thing around. I'm nervous!
He really is...worried??
2) Unintelligable at 4:40. Perhaps saying ''Brian is my hero''?
Yeah - that was it!!
3) Great circle @ 7:29!
Agreed - very nice mate!!!!!!!
4) Mother of GOD, is that sunlight peering through the abysmal British overcast???
ROFLOL
5) How the hell do you get 9 minutes?? Must be your BEC??
Thanx for sharing!
Ps I see yer still flyin' that stock milk jug canopy.....sheeese Simon!
pss In the stills, is that maneuver considered ''banking''. I don't recall having seen that on my fomer Lama.

Hey again R/B aka Brian,

...Can't wait for another video of yours!!! This is really good for me - and no damage/rebuilds!

Peter
P.S. You could always ship Simon a good-looking canopy....!

Peter,

Ummmm, report, por favor???

On the contrary, I love your style of flying.. nice and relaxing to watch... highly enjoyable...

almost like watching an aquarium with the fish just going back and forth.....

Today was the first day with NO wind since I started flying the 450 GT and "Inspired by your videos"  I put 2 batteries through Stormtrooper flying it just as you do... It was fun and so nice not to battle 20 kt winds and turbulence..

(Stormtrooper is the name of my 450 GT, christened by my wife who suggested I leave it plain white and black..)

Hiya Simon!

Enjoyed your relaxing video. Some observations:

1) Of course it was a cold wind [>:]

2) Photo shoped the blue sky in......whay a great idea!

3) I was kinda rootin' for the apple tree "hair cut"

4) Amazing how we can predict the low batt alarm. I can hear the sound of my motors slowing. I AM the heli!

5) Your production lacks as always!!!

Yer pal,

b

PS We heard from Spiros???

5) Your production lacks as always!!!

Yer pal,

Hi Brian,

ROFL!

Hey I just have 2 minutes to say..

I maidened the 450PRO TT today..

HK401 Gyro + Futaba s9257 servo on the tail = FRICKING AWESOME!!

WOW... it is way better than I expected... ROCK SOLID AND TOTALLY PRECISE.

1000% better than the Dectum/DS480 combo I have on my other helis... (maybe the TT helps a bit too..)

I will post video of the maiden flight later

(the wife has arranged a river cruise today and I have 15 minutes to get ready.... (bugger.. I just want to stay home and fly my new heli again...)

EDIT - Maiden Flight here..    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9X0rYnHEDY

I've since flown it 6 more times.. it flies beautifully, it sounds very different to the belt versions.. I like it more!

PS... Just ordered this baby.. the 250 GT.. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9974

I'm now addicted to building them as much as flying them... lucky they're cheap...

Hey again all,

Still here - just reading along while I wait for my parts from HobbyKing....
A little bird told me that there may be delays in HobbyKing orders - not because of HobbyKing - but the HongKong postal service which is getting a bit "clogged". Bottle-necks do clear though and I am in no hurry just yet.
Trying to predict the arrival of my overseas orders, I ordered the actual bird from the HobbyKing AUS warehouse (right here in New South Wales) on Monday - which arrived during the week - so there are a few boxes awaiting necessary items on my workbench before I start the build The last order from HongKong (which should have arrived by now) contained my new threadlock - d@mn it!!

Peter
P.S. Simon, could you email what you have on the keycam #3 to me also? I presently have 3 and would LOVE to remove the datestamp!!
P.P.S. If you PM Spiros ( aircrash ) with a direct question he will answer your plea - but I assume that he is really busy with his new baby human! Pleasant flying all......
