Love To build -> Ziroli Stuka plug in wing panels (7/30/2003 7:00:15 AM)

Has anyone done the stuka with plugin outer wing panels? If so, I would like to here how you did it.

Yes I did it on my latest Stuka Panels are from the gull portion outward. Replaced ribs on both sides of the break with aircraft ply ribs. Making three ribs on each side of aircraft ply. Then used 1" heavy wall tubing to make the joint. Used a servo for each flap to avoid linkage problems on taking apart and joining the panels. Covered the seam with the usual Stuka joint molding. Came out great and has been flown with no problems as of this date. John N

John N I am just at the start of the wing build on my Z Stuka and would also like to have detachable wing panels, do you have any pics of the construction?

Did you put the tube right behind the spar?

How did you retain the panels?

Sorry there are so many questions but I only want to build these once :)

FireBee -> wing tubes (7/30/2003 8:11:39 PM)

John, will do same on Giant corsair.

Here are my questions

Do you use 1/64 ply to make a wing tube socket or just cut a 1" hole in each wing rib? before or after wingspar.

Do you use any type of wood pin at the trailing spar or front spar to keep wing from rotating on the aluminum tube.

Do you use some socket head scew to ensure wing does not slide out while airborne.

I used the phanolic tube with the aluminum heavy wall tube inside that. A dowel at the leading and trailing edge keeps the wing from rotating on the tube and then a tapped block with a 8/32 screw thru it goes intomthe tube to prevent the wing from pulling out. The tube is behing the spar approx 3/4 " . I also scabbed additional pieces around the holes thru the ribs to spread the load out furthur. The holes in the ribs were made bigger. with the wing panels only partially sheetted thery were clamped together withe the outer tubes in place. Then the scabs were put around the outer tubes which then held them in perfect alignment. All the ribs connected with the tubes were 1'8 aircraft ply as wqere the scabs around the tubes. Hope this helps John N

Thanks John N. I'm getting ready to start the stuka and now I'll lay it out the way you did it. I was worried about strength since yours has a couple flights on it I feel It should be fine. As I do the mod I will post here on the forums with pictures. I'm ordering the tube and sleeve and will be able to start in a couple weeks.

Check out the pics of this process on the www.ziroliplans.com web site. As I did mine I posted pics in construction gallery. Good Luck, three pieces is the way to go!

John N, excellent info that will allow me to do same. thanks.

only question, what exactly is a phanolic tube made oF?
Where to get one?

Stuka Jon N -> Plug in wings (8/2/2003 6:26:03 PM)

This is the outer tube supplied when you buy a tube set. It is a hard epoxy type material. This forms the socket that the aluminium tube slides into. I used heavy wall 1" aluminum tube for the inner tube. Purchased it from I believe Gator RC JohnN
