I started on the ESM P-40 a month ago and didn't take too many photos until recently, but I hope this gives everyone an idea of how the plane is constructed and looks.

First, everything went together like most other kits (servo install), pull-pull, etc. Nothing unique of special there.

The DA-50 went in without any issues. The firewall is a movable cylinder that you slide in/out until you get the motor in the right spot for the cowl. Very easy and nice (like a Byron mount except you glue it in place).

I wanted a full cock pit and slidding canopy so that's where I deviated from the planes. I ended up constructing a capsule like setup for the canopy that can be removed to access the electronics under it. Here are some shots:

Since the planes main access is via the canopy I needed a nice clean way to get the cockpit in/out and this capsule works well. It's all self contained and comes off with just a simple pin latch and is held on in the back with a couple carbon fiber tubes. The canopy slides on plastic t-bar slides. It will be opened maually as I just didn't want to deal with the setup.

The wings were your standard flap and aleron setup and were easy to install the servos and control rods. Both the alerons and flap setup look very scale with them recessed into the wings.

The gear was easy to install, but needed a little adjustment as the rotating mechanism rubbed on the inside spare. I a little dremel work and they fit great. The gear mechanism is very smooth and look solid. I haven't installed the gear cowlings yet, but they look pretty easy. They are in three pieces that must be assebled. I am not going to intall gear doors on the mains as the door are so little I don't see an need to do it. I will install doors for the tail wheel.

For some reason I can only attached one photo per post now? The files are not that large so I am not sure what's going on.

I will just have to post one per for now. Here is a shot of the gear mechanism:

The other problem I had with the gear was all the screws that came with the kit to be used for the gear installation were so weak that every head twisted off when I tried to screw them in. I had to use other screws. I guess it was better now that on a landing. Pretty weak cheap metal stuff for sure.

What retracts are you using? I have read that the ESM Retracts are not all that good, whats your assessment of them if you are using ESM?

These are Sierra retracts and are way beefy

The ESM gear are fine for most of the planes I have. I did have them break on my Me-110, but they have been fine on my Hurricane and P-51. They aren't as strong as the Sierra, but for most landings are just fine. The air systems that come with them are crap and I just throw them away and get Robart stuff.

Here's a shot of the Tail gear. Hare to get a good shot, but this shows what it looks like. No doors yet.

Here's a shot of the cowl. Looks very nice with the spinner in place. I still have to paint the spinner.

I like the looks of your gear! Very robust, to say the least!  What is the span on your model?

I do have a question, based on a Giant Scale Model P-40 I have. This is now sold by another company. CMP maybe?

How is your lower spar configured?  I'm asking that because the GSM P-40 had the gear recessed into the wing so that the strut is below the level of the skin when retracted. This made it neccessary to cut the spar in two  to allow the gear to retract. It appears that your main strut is also recessed to fit flush or inside of the skin when retracted.

The problem with this is two fold. First, of course, is that the spar is the main structure holding the outboard section of the wing in any kind of high-G maneuver. Ths skin doesn't provide any strength here because of the retract cutout.  Second, it's not scale.  On the full scale P-40,  when the gear is retracted, that part of the strut that is not enclosed by the two small doors is actually outside of the wing skin which preserves the integerty of the spar and strength of the wing structure. How do I know this? A good friend of mine flies a full scale P-40 and I have many photos of it. I have also flown alongside of it in formation and have a few photos which shows this.

When I built my P-40, I raised the gear mounts high enough to allow the struts to pass above the spar that I epoxied to the rear face of the severed spars.   I can't see in your photos if the spar was cut, but it does appear that the gear is recessed pretty low.

Good luck on your model. I love the way mine flys, I'm sure your will be a winner.

Dash

It looks like mine is the correct way. When the gear is retracted the strut stays above the sheeting of the wing. Only the tires are below the skin. The gear mount sticks out about 3/4 of an inch above the wing and the cowl goes over that.

This is an ESM kit not a CMP kit. The CMP is smaller. This one has an 86" wing span.

he's talking about this (see below pic) spar shouldn't be cut for the retracts.
when your cut the spar for clearance, it weakens the wing.
this pic is my Top Flite Gold Edition P-40 kit. will be getting century jet retracts.

It does go ove the spar. The wing tube goes right under the struts. I don't have a good shot of it, but will try and get one.

Here's a better shot of the cockpit. I think it's an old TF P47 cockpit that seemed to fit well. The pilot if a 1/6 scale German Dragon figure I also had laying around.

I still have a lot of work to do like: mount the fuel tank, cut the spinner, mount the gear cowlings, setup the air system, add a smoke system? (might do this if I need to add more weight up front). Also need to install the tail wheel gear doors, add machine guns to the wings, do some weathering, etc.

Here's some weathering of the exhaust I did:

Mike,

The exhaust was done with a layer of primer then while it's still wet sprinkle on some Kosher salt (a little larger grains) until it dries. Then add more primer, then silver and black over that. I makes a nice pitted looking finish. This also works for wing walks too, but you might want to use the regular smaller grain salt.

The spinner is from VQ. Ty makes them and sends them uncut so you can use it for what ever prop you want. I have a three blade 22-10 for mine

He also kept the back plate solid so it's very heavy. If you don't need the weight then you can drill out part and lighten it up as needed.

Jeff
