smarks -> Sunracer V3 Build (10/18/2010 6:47 AM)

So I just got my new Sunracer V3. Getting ready to start the build. This is my first F5D and am excited to get her up in the air. Here is my setup:

NEU 1110/1Y
Phoenix 80 ESC
APC 4.5x4.1 and 4.75x4.75
HYPERION G3 EX 2200 MAH 3S 11.1V 45C/90C Lipo
2x HS-56HB Ailerons
1x Hyperion DS09 SCD Elevator
Spektrum AR6255 Carbon Rx

Had some questions if anyone could help out:
1. What do you use to glue on the horizontal stab?
2. Aileron and elevator throws for high and low rates? Expo?
3. Recommended CG?
4. Does anyone put anything on the bottom of the plane to protect it when landing, i.e. clear tape or something?

Also, any other recommendations would be welcome! Here's a pic of the one I got.

I used thin CA to glue in the tail on my V1. It was way cool and crazy fast. Where did you get yours?

smoknrv4 -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/21/2010 12:49 AM)

I'm using the 1110/1Y on my Escape, and love it! I will be watching your thread, sunracer looks fast.

Thanks for the info. Got it from SUSA. Glad to hear you liked it!

Good to hear. What's your setup? I like the Escape, but I hear they stopped making them or something. I was considering getting one until I heard that. How fast are you going? I will try to post some pics along the way and maybe a vid or two [:D]

smoknrv4 -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/21/2010 2:27 AM)

I don't have a way to check my speed but its faster than a couple of turbines I've seen, I am just using a Turnigy Plush 60A with a 40C 2200mah 3s pack and a 4.1x4.1 apc prop, sucking 70A static, pushing the esc a bit.
Yeah the Escape is an awesome airframe too bad they don't make it anymore but I scored a spare airframe the other week slightly used and in mint condition, which I'm extremely happy about.
This sunracer is neat looking but the price....I can see why your wife is a little out of sorts, mine would be but she'd get over it though[sm=lol.gif]its not too bad pricewise I guess compared to some of the other ones I've seen.keep us posted.
cheers

Heres the thread on my escape, some pics in there somewhere, with cooling inlets and whatnot.

smoknrv4 -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/21/2010 3:12 AM)

Oh yeah and go with spoilerons, about 3/8" up throw, w/ a hair of up elevator to compensate. Helps a lot with slowing it down.

smarks -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/21/2010 6:12 AM)

Nice, thanks for the info smoknrv4. Yeah, my wife isn't necessarily upset with the price of this model, it's just that I have two giant scale IMAC planes that are a lot more than these pylon racers. Also have three other smaller electrics. She keeps asking, "why do you need another one!!!" lol I actually consider my hanger to be pretty small compared to some of my buddies. What can I say.

Anyway, if you can get a video of a flyby of your Escape I can doppler it for you and tell you the speed. I would need the air tempurature as well when you take the video.

vertical grimmace -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/21/2010 10:30 PM)

I was going to mention the spoileron/flaperon thing as well. YOu have to get her dirty to slow down. THis plane has almost zero sink and is very clean. Probably the smoothest I have ever flown. YOu will like it.

Guy's

You can also get the sunracer from ESPIRIT models out of florida, thats where i got mine, they'er quick with a NEU motor and 2200 EVO lipo pack, 4.25x4.25 APC, i lose a blade every flight, if you can find the CAM carbon fiber blades this will help,
REMEMBER - don't take your eyes of it or you will loose it, it will eat sky reeeeeeaaaalllll quick.
And yes it will float if you don't input some spoileron for landing

Have some fun

Do you have your ESC programmed with the brake on? I was breaking a lot of blades also before I set the break on my ESC, stops the windmill effect of the blade when landing, now I hardly ever break them.
Just a suggestion.[;)]

smarks -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/24/2010 6:39 AM)

Hobby lobby has CAM props. Are they better than APC?
I plan to set my brake as well. Should the brake be set to max or like medium?

smoknrv4 -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/24/2010 7:00 AM)

I would set it to max, even then it'll still spin a couple more times after throttle shut down. I just use apc cause my LHS stocks them, I like them, the cam props are quieter I think, thats all.

scoeroo -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/24/2010 6:40 PM)

The ESC brake is turned off, it is recomended to let the prop free-wheel,
opening up the fuse vents is also a plus, keeps things inside a bit cooler,

smoknrv4 -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/24/2010 8:49 PM)

Free wheeling prop is fine as long as you don't mind buying a trunkload of props I guess, also I'm not sure what the problem is to program a brake or why it would be recommended to leave it off. Just curious.[sm=confused.gif]

smarks -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/24/2010 8:56 PM)

I was wondering the same thing. Seems to make more sense to have the break on??

vertical grimmace -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/24/2010 10:05 PM)

I felt the cam props were faster but that was my experience.

scoeroo -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/24/2010 10:39 PM)

I think the cam props get more bite because there is no flexing, after a flight i would notice stress lines in the apc blades and would have to discard it, can't trust a blade at 50,000 rpm with stress marks.

smarks -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/31/2010 6:03 PM)

OK, I finally had some time yesterday to start working on this thing. Got the aileron servos glued in. Used 5 minute epoxy with microballoons. I ground off the mounting tabs and roughed up the servo case and the mounts on the wing so the epoxy would have a good bond.

I then moved on to the horizontal stab. Marked the center line then measured from stab tip to wing tip to insure everything was straight. I marked the final position with masking tap so I knew exactly where it should be when I started gluing. I roughed up the surface of the stab where the glue would be and then I was ready to go. I used 15 minute epoxy for this. Once the stab was in place, made sure it was level with the wing. Once the epoxy started to set, I removed the masking tape. I plan on putting a small fillet of epoxy on the stab and fuse to make sure I have a very strong bond and also makes it look finished.

That was all I had time for yesterday, but plan on working on opening the air holes in the fuse next, followed by the elevator servo and motor and electronics.

smoknrv4 -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (10/31/2010 6:31 PM)

lookin good.[;)]

smarks -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (11/2/2010 8:12 PM)

Got the air holes cut out. Cutting holes in Kevlar and making them look good is a pain. I did a couple things to make it easier though. First, I ran CA over the back of the indents where I would be cutting hoping that it would soak up the threads so they would not fray as bad. I then cut the holes and sanded them with sandpaper rolled up into a tube. There were still quite a few frays of Kevlar so I took a q-tip and soaked the tip in CA and dabbed it around the openings so the Kevlar would soak up the CA. After it dried, I sanded again and was able to get them to look pretty good. Much harder than cutting and sanding fiberglass! [X(]

smoknrv4 -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (11/3/2010 9:11 AM)

Don't you hate having to cut holes into such a beautiful fuselage![:@]

smarks -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (11/3/2010 7:40 PM)

Yes. That's why I want them to look as good as possible, which is not easy. [:(]

daven -> RE: Sunracer V3 Build (11/3/2010 11:23 PM)

Nice looking plane, love the colors :)

Kevlar is a bear to get the frayed edges looking good.
