Wow...I know this thread hasn't been busy for a long while but here goes....
I've tossed this idea around a little bit...

What about a "Passive" on-board solar charging system that simply uses a very small battery pack augmented by a few solar cells on top of the wing to essentially keep your RX pack topped off??

I'm not talking about POWERING a motor on your plane (cause I'm thinking 100 inch span SIG RISER glider). Rather, a "fly all day" on thermals or slope without having to worry about battery status (at least in your plane).

Imagine a 4 oz wing loading and big fat thermals or a nice slope....kick back in your feet on the lawn chair and fly till your Tx beeps at you...(which could alternatively be set up the same way)...passive charging...

So, figure the mAh current draw from a Rx and two or three servos, and just charge at slightly above that rate you'll have "endless juice" to your onboard system??

Call me crazy...(pun)...but I don't see why it wouldn't work with a little creativity...

Hey every one, i am on my high school's solar bike team (whitch took first in the world a few years ago ) anyway the cells that we use
put out 3volts per cell at .125 ma witch is no were near enough to power an electric airplane non stop also each sell cost only 3 dollars but they wouldn't be powerful enough.

wait a second... why not just lug a 12v battery out into the field?

i kinda skimmed over all that, but i think it'd be cool the put solar cells on the wings to actually help power the radio and motor in flight. Maybe just "assist" the battery and make it last longer.

maybe someone said all that and i missed it?
