Earlwb,

I ended up replacing the stock retracts with a set from Hobbico (Tower). Much less slop, and only about 20 dollars.

Mine flies fine with a pair of TT Pro .36's and 10x6 props and Bisson mufflers. I have about 50 flights on it. The only issue is nose-overs on grass fields. No problem on pavement. The plane is a keeper.

It will need a little down elevator coupled to the flaps for good landings.

Have fun!

I have my retract servo mounted sideways, but I designed it to fit in that way.
I would definitly consider re-engineering that area so the servo is on it's
side.  Also, Z-bends will help eliminate any binding.  I'll post some pics of
my F-82 retract set-up.  By the way, NICE F-82!!!!

Earlwb,

Here's some pics of my retract set-up on my F-82.

Notice where I have ground down the e-z links allowing for zero
binding and full "lock to lock" at the retracts.  I have used  these type
of set-up's for years without any problems. Except I need to
rebend the landing gear wire forward after every flight, so it go's into
the wheel well(I'm going to put some new/stronger wire in soon).

 Hope these help, Jon

Thanks for the info. yeah I have done that in the past on other planes with a side mounted retract servo before.
But I didn't want to dremel out the plywood servo tray the factory had installed. Plus the wing spar is right behind the servo so one would have to be careful to not cut into it for clearance. so I decided against it.
I think the problem is finding a lower profile retract servo. The the servo arm would not be protruding above the wing in the front, or being flush with the rear wing skin at the back.
But the Z-bends would help reduce the height a lot. so someone wanting to use the retracts in this version of the F82 kit should likely go that route instead of the route I took.

I'll wait and see as to how well the OEM retracts hold up or not. if I replace them, then I'll have the sizing for the pushrods just about perfect, so making a Zbend version would be a trivial matter.

earlwb,

I have the bottom of my retract servo sandwiched between
the upper and lower wing spars, so I didn't need to remove any
spar material.  Also Hi-tec makes a nice compact retract servo, but
I'm not so sure it would help with your current set-up, since the top of the
servo case would probably be about the same height.

Anyone have a link for a good F-82 3-view. I have an old Wing Mfg., P-51 and would like to convert it.

What is going on with the attachments, why are they so large?
When I tried to post four pics, it posted two normal size pics
and one GIGANTIC sized one.  If Ram-bro's F-82 3-views
were any larger I could build right off of my computer monitor!
I hope they fix this soon.

I took my F82 out today for some New Year's Flying. But it was so chilly, I decided to not try and fly it today. Maybe tomorrow as it will be a little better weather-wise.
But here are the pics of my plane and myself too.
I did fly another plane today, but it was tough to get the engine to fire up, and then I needed to warm it up for a while, before I could fly it.
My fingers were getting pretty cold outside at the flying field.

Very nice plane earlwb!   I like the the wwII scheme with the invasion stripes.  F-82's were
designed to escort B-29's into Japan, but never got the chance to fly any missions.
They were based in Japan when the Korean conflict began, and an F-82 had the first
"Air kill" of the war, shooting down a yak 11.     Send some some pics of it flying!

I haven't done much with it so far. The weather been somewhat abyssmal every time I wanted to have a go. so it hasn't flown yet.
several times I tried to get out early, but the wind would pickup too much by the time I was ready to fly it.
Yeah its embarrassing, got it all ready to go, I keep charging it up and the weather won't cooperate.  Like this last weekend, 25 mph winds with 35 MPH windgusts.
It just isn't any fun to maiden a plane on really windy days.

I just cannot believe it. It has been super windy for what seems like forever now.
even during the week it is super windy. Heck last Friday we even had 50 mph wind gusts no less.
I just really hate to maiden a plane when it is super windy, as it makes it tough to get a feel for the plane, harder to trim, and triple tricky to land as well.
Good thing I have a nice flight simulator to use to get my fix with.
i am using the Great planes flight simulator, and I was amazed that they had dialed in some of the simulations really well. I had built and flown a couple of Royal B-17's many years ago. I could never get them to do a decent roll. The planes just didn't want to do a roll and sort of fought against it. The simulator copied that behavior really well too.
The Hobbico Twin star simulaton is a bit overpowered in that they used .40 engines on the plane when the kit calls for 20 to 25 size engines. so it flies fast and wild at WOT. But it is fun though.

Anyway, one of these days the weather will cooperate. worst case is having to wait until August here, where we have a month of high heat and no winds to speak of. But I ought to be able to try it out then if nothing else.

Finally I had a decent day and everything came together. I remembered to bring the horizontal stabilizer, and I didn't forget the TX.
The maiden flight went great. The plane lifted off quickly off the grass, in about 40 feet, and flew off perfectly with plenty of power. The Saito FA-40a engines worked good and had lots of power. I only needed to dial in some down trim and it was in business. it sounded awesome in the air with the two Saito engines purring away happily. The plane didn't exhibit any odd tendencies, so it is a keeper.

After bringing it back down, the plane slowed down nicely and landed quite gracefully and when suddenly ground looped. When I looked it appeared that the landing gear wires had bent on me. But later I took a closer look and discovered that one of the landing gear retract units had broke in half. I had not had retracts simply break in half before, so that is a first for me.
So that ends using these retracts that came with the plane. As others have mentioned already the OEM retracts are junk.

Now getting the plane to take off of the grass with the little tires and having the landing gear set back behind the leading edge of the wing is tricky to do. I had someone hold the plane so I could build up the engine speed to WOT and then give it a good push to overcome the drag of the grass, otherwise it'll simply ground loop on me. If I took off of pavement it would not be a problem. The grass at our field tends to be a little taller than at some other flying fields. But not too tall though.

Anyway, I have another set of retracts with a metal frame, so I'll be swapping them out later. Then maybe I can get a video of it flying.

I have always loved the look of the F-82 so I took two .60 size TopFlight p-51 kits and did a little building! I did not lengthen the fuselage for the proper scale outline but it will fool most guys at the field. I powered it with two Zenoah G20's I have only had two flights due to some issues with the ignition of one of the motors. I have the fixed engine back now and I hope to put some more flights on it soon! The last picture is of the F-82 sitting next to my 1/4 scale Balsa USA DR-1

I replaced the retracts in my Nitroplanes F-82 with the Hobbico retracts. No issues since and they were very inexpensive and an easy swap.

Yeah I have a set of those too. Originally I was going to use them, but when I was fiddling around with the OEM ones, they didn't feel all that bad. At least the set I had seemed OK. My mistake.
Thanks

Nice job on the Betty Joe!
I flew RC with Col. Thacker back when I lived in northern CA. Quite an honor.

I've drooled on the full scale article several times. Always a treat!

Keep the twin spirit going!

I have an F-82 ARF kit from World Models that I have been sittin' on. I will get to it someday, in the meantime I have researched every way I know how to get a clear photo or structural drawing of the big long radar bulb where it attaches to the wing. I have seen plenty of pics of it 3/4 view, but never at the root. I even bought a rare out of print book on the F-82 that was supposed to be the most comprehensive work put out, but no picstures of the root or better yet the radar pod alone by itself.

How do you guys do it? I see models with this pod. Where did you get the info to build it?

Anyone got some pics of the radar pod and how it attaches to the wing?

I used the old Squadron Insignia book on the the P-51 Mustang.
At the end of the book they cover the P-51H which is what the
F-82 was based on (Not the P-51D) which was smaller and lighter
than the D model. There is also a few pages covering the F-82.
I believe there is a picture or two of the area of the pod root.

Humm, that is a good idea if you are trying to fly these planes off of a grass flying field. Mine gets bogged down in the grass for taxing or the initial start of the takeoff.
But with the underslung radar dome pod on it, it could sort of skid on the pod a little until it gets going. it also means it will less likely nose over and kill the engines on a landing too as the pod will prevent it.
Cool idea,

In looking at the pics I found, it appears the pod is simply mounted to the lower side or bottom of the wing front. It doen't come over to the upper side.
ref http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/models/aircraft/North-American-P82.html
They have a cool paper airplane model kit for the plane at the URL referenced.

Thanks Earl.

Hey guys, check this out! I just found the Squadron book online! And it shows the root of the radar pod in a drawing.
