Here's a pic of my scratch-built  F-82 Twin Mustang. It's powered by O.S. fs-30's and uses mechanical retracts.   It has a fairly scale outline and has pretty high wing loading and yet still flys well with one engine out ( It happens every once and awhile and doesn't  seem to matter which one) although I have no idea how it will fly with both engines out(I'm thinking ''Brick'').   This picture was take last year on vaction in Redding  California at the Redding r/c flyers field.

When did the Navy squadron VFA-25 become an Army Air Corp, or USAF squadron. I know I know you just like it, but during the time of the P-82 the Fisty's were flying F-4U Corsairs, or Bearcats.

I was wondering when somebody would notice that.  It only took  about six months.
Good eye Cowboylifesaver. Undiluted 409 cleaner(I usually mix it window cleaner)
pretty much destroyed my custom water transfer decals after a couple of wipe downs.

I was visiting Redding and I wanted that shot of the plane with Mount Shasta in the
background.  I took some shots without any emblems and they looked too plain without
any color on the tail. I happend to have a roll of these small Fisty's stickers in one of my
flight boxes.  I got the stickers from the fisty's when I spent eight days on the Ronald Reagan
going  from Pearl to san diego. They were actually only on the plane for about twenty minutes,
but they'll be in those pics forever.

                                                                       P.S. Don't tell anybody.

Ok guys I have a question, I've been thinking about building or kit bashing another p-82.

My question is about wing taper, or the sweep of the leading edge, Just can't find the answer via google images

Did the p-82 follow the same sweep and eliminate the extra sweep for the gear the p51 has? or does is it have a different sweep to match the width at the cord?

Just take a look at the three views. No inboard crank on the wing because the gear goes into the wing center section which is plenty wide. It makes for easy cutting of wing cores!

That's just it, I see that, But I can't tell via the 3-views which is which,, I don't know how or even if they are accurate some of the drawings are.

The question is, is the Cord the same where it meets fuse side or smaller on the p-82

Just make a constant chord center section that ends at the outboard fuse side. Also the F-82 will use 90-deg retracts instead of 85-deg since they are under the outboard edge of the fuses and there is no dihedral right there.

Well, we tried helping. Not sure what else we can do...
It is VERY clear from all three-views that the leading edge is straight from tip to root.
The root chord of the outboard panel is the same as the center section...
This is a typical 3-view and is accurate enough for most work...

Yes the wing is different, the F-82 wasn't two  P-51D's  put together. It was created using the last mustang varient, the P-51H.
This was a smaller and lighter aircraft (4,000lbs. less)  and was powered with allison ,not rolls-royce engines. the wings
were smaller with no strake on the inboard leading edge.

Scale,

The wing strake was deleted on the F-82, ala the P-51H, so the chord is less the width of the strake and not increased to absorb the strake.

The late Col. Art Johnson built a few P/F-82 Twin Mustangs. They were very scale. He would compete in scale contests with them. I got a set of his plans in the early 80's.
The P-82B like Col. Thacker flew on the long distance flight (Betty Jo) was powered by late MK V-1650 Merlins. The F-82 E,G,and H were powered by the most powerful version of the Alison V-1710. It was said at cruise if an engine quit the only way to tell was to see the ET and FF drop. No change in trim, speed, or RPM. Col. Thacker likes the "B" model the best with the Merlins.

Can't wait to see that baby!
My Art Johnson Top Gun competition bird is still in the restoration phase....
It has been a three year process, so far and is not done yet.
Each time we think it is about ready to go, something else rears its head that needs a total do-over.
It is getting there though.
We hope to have it around late May in order ot fly at the next Bomber Field fly-in in early June.
Will take lots of pics when shes sees daylight!
