yes the old 32 with jett pipe will do well with a 8x7 or 8x8 prop. the 35 AX will do very well with a 8x8 prop also

My thunder tiger .36 does 18,000 + with the 8x8 and a Jett muffler.

Good to know. I picked up a TT36Pro last fall to go in my GP Spitfire, but except for 2 tanks of break-in fuel on the bench, it has not gone anywhere yet, as my Spitfire still has the original OS25 in it. This is a nice-lookin' plane; might make a good home for my TT36

I have the GP SPitfire as well. Honestly, I would leave the .25 in it and put the .36 TT in the Sundowner. The Sundowner is nice, but it is too bad they did not get it a little closer to the new EF1 specs that the NMPRA has lined out. It is legal but maybe just a little bit bigger and heavier than neccesary. The main reason for this is it would probably increase sales and insure a little longer production life. This does look like a cool little plane.
As far as power, check out the NMPRA legal power system. The Eflite Power 25. This has been pulling the EF1 aircraft in the 125 to 130 range.

I am interested in this plane but would like to do an electric install. Looking for a motor that would put the performance in the 125mph + range. Considering the Hyperion 3026 (1900 kv) on a 5s 3300 mah 40c pack. Any suggestions?

I think this combo will put you in the "propeller disintegration range"...an pulling huge watts unless you put a Midi Fan rotor on the front You will be trying to spin that prop at 30,000RPM (APC 8 inch prop is only rated to 19K RPM). I just ordered the Scorpion SII 3026-1190 for 4 s for my SD 36. This should spin a 8x8 around 15k. From what I remember when I use to race 40 size warbirds with Nelson 40s... i think we turned props like that around the same RPM. I believe they have a SII 3026-890 which would be good for 5s "in bursts with good cooling" It is only rated for 4s, but people run them fine with 5s if you are smart about it. Again around 15kRPM on a 8x8 prop i believe.

Well I got one home tonight and will unpack it the morning and start a build thread.. First impression is pretty good, with one exception.. In all the pics I have seen on this plane and all the pictures on the box, it has a aluminum spinner. So I was a little surprised when I opened up the box with the hardware for a quick look and seen it has a cheap PLASTIC spinner and not a very good one at that, seen better cones on fireworks!!! Not a huge deal with me, but if you think your getting what’s on the box and no where does it say otherwise, it's a little disappointing.. Had the pictures shown the cheap plastic spinner, I still would have bought the plane and would have just tossed the supplied one aside and not thought twice about it..... I will take pics in the morning and start another thread, feel free to join in with any tips or suggestions.........

A piped OS.32 will run a 8x8 at 18,000 all day on .15% fuel and hit near 130 mph on a half decent speed plane. .

I talked with my LHS on Sunday about the spinner and he agreed that wasn't right, he checked his other kit and it had the same cheap plastic one.. Not only does it show the aluminum one on all the pics, it give you directions on how to install the aluminum spinner in the manual.. He called up Horizon and they are sending out a spinner for mine and his other kit.. I wonder if it's a goof or what, but man that could be a whole bunch of spinners!  I did check everything else out and it all looks real nice.........

I think it'll be too heavy, and bulky for that airframe, also prop clearance to the ground might be an issue.

Almost done with my SD36. All that is left is to install the ailerons. I had to order the digital servos from my LHS.

They said it shouldn't be done. I put my favorite engine with a Jett muffler in the SD36. I've seen where people are putting .90's in the SD50, so I decided to put my O.S. 50SX in the SD36. I put this motor in a Kobra (the little one), which has less wing area, and it flew great (until pilot error). I was able to correctly balance it.

I have had it fully built for over week and, I need some help on commiting to a power plant. I have a brand new TT Pro 40 with a Jett pipe, and I can,t seem to pull away from that setup. So what do
you guys think? Will that setup give this plane the power and, speed it deserves?

Another OS 50 with a Jett pipe ready to install. A few more hours and she should be ready to rock.

Flew the SD36 Yesterday. It was a bit windy. The tail was light, which made it difficult to taxi around on the runway. It was balanced right on the money (as the book recommended), but the tail was still light. I set the rudder and aileron throws as recommended. I added more throw to the elevator. I used a "Y" cable on the ailerons instead of mixing. This gave the same amount of deflection for both up and down positions on the ailerons. This caused a wobble, or yaw when rolling. However, there was none noticed in normal flight. It flew well. We got some height, and slowed it down to see what it would do when it ran out of air speed. It just started to sink. No snapping.

So, here it is. The video of my SD36 with OS. 50SX. This video should answer all of the questions above about size.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbY72Z9mVnw

Hope you like it.

Ouch, that left a mark!! Good flying, bad camera work, I agree with your decision to fire him..lol

I guess it was to much motor for the airframe, I haven't started mine yet and now i am spooked.. Were you pulling a hard G when she let lose, it didn't look like it from what i could see in the vid.. How about posting some pics of the wing failure, 134mph doesn't sound like it was much over what they are claiming as far as speed goes. You would think if it was designed/built right, it would take it.... Sorry for the short life of your SD36

Here are some pictures of the wing that failed in the air.
I was going level. It started to roll right, probably due to pilot error, I added left aileron to correct it and that's when it ripped of. I set up the ailerons as specified in the book. Low rates were on at the time.

It looks like it failed just aft the the wing tube, is it the pic, or does it look like pretty big spacing between ribs.. What is the measurement between ribs, was there one where it broke?

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.  There are reasons we put recommended engine and power systems in our product information and instructions.  I would be willing to bet the failure started long before the wing actually failed at some earlier point in the flight when you did load the wing.

Pete
