I just bought a NP Ultimate 120 ARF to replace my goldberg that played chicken with a gas well and lost! I had an O.S. 91 fx (hard to keep tuned) in the goldberg w/ 14/6 prop it flew great though I don't know if it would hover it did have nice vert. I am just starting to try 3-d and when I set the NP up I want to do it once. My question is will the 91 3-d the plane or should I go bigger? I also have an O.S. 1.08 I could use. I'd really like a 4 st. but I have these motors already. Just looking for some advice and tips from owners of this airframe. thanks,Bill

No, the .91FX will not provide enough power for vigorous 3D with that model. In fact, I'm not even certain that a two-stroke 1.20 will be strong enough to provide satisfactory power for vigorous 3D in the usual manner.

There is more to 3D than just hovering, an extra powerful engine and large control surfaces with lots of throw. There is the one thing that is difficult to find in an ARF and that is lightness while maintaining adequate strength.

On the other hand. My Great Planes Trainer Forty kit version would just hover and torque roll when being powered by a muffled Enya .45 CX running a 10x6 prop. I discovered this quite accidentally some years ago and used to do it intentionally when the right folks were at the field and paying attention to my flight. That was a light model and a very strong engine and it hovered and torque rolled confidentally, but to get out of the hover mode, one applied elevator to break the hover. We were already at full throttle. What I'm saying is that you "might" be able to just hover your Ultimate Biplane if you select the proper prop. That will let you accumulate more flying time using what you already have while accomplishing one of your goals.

An OS 1.60FX would definitely manhandle your model. But it may end up so heavy that it wouldn't be a good flyer.

Were I going to try a larger engine, I would buy (what I just bought) a DLE 20cc engine. It should be as strong as some 1.20 four-strokes and it would be tons cheaper to operate. It also weighs slightly less than a glow four-stroke with its huge fuel load (which compensates for the ignition box and battery needed by the DLE 20cc engine).

Let us know what you decide, what you've done and what you think. Good luck.
