Wait for it to die first... Does it always die in every old Caldera? If it does (this is not meant to be ''stealing'') I would call Redcat now and tell them that it broke, and by the time it really breaks (apparently in the first run) you'll have a replacement already on the way. But that's probably not the best idea, because if it doesn't actually break you've totally ripped Redcat off $20...

if the older servo died on every caldera, then redcat wouldnt have made any money on them...lol.
there was most likely a bad batch, or a quality control issue and redcat had the manufacturer start using a different servo.
just run it. if it dies redcat will replace it.
also, there are some $15 high-torque metal geared servos on hobbypartz.com. that price includes shipping. more torque than the stock servos! i replace alot of the servos in my RTRs(trucks and crawlers) with those servos.

***THREAD RESURRECTION***

WHAT TIRES AND WHEELS DID YOU PUT ON THE TRUCK?

Anyways the truck looks awesome.

I got the Caldera 10E a couple of weeks ago. Its a great truck. Let me comment on a few things.

LIPO'S....For Lipo's, GENS ACE 2S 30C 5300 Lipo's fit perfect. I got mine here

ESC PROGRAMMING WITHOUT CARD..... Imo, a ESC programming card is only worth it if you plan on programming the ESC often. If you only plan on programming the ESC only a few times (like most people) then just do it without a programming card. Its actually pretty easy to program WITHOUT A PROGRAMMING CARD. The ESC has a Green LED and a Red LED. When programming the ESC without a card, the Green LED flashes and beeps so its not that hard to follow. Just make sure you know which beep/LED flash corresponds with which items (like Brake force, Voltage cutoff, etc); the pdf for the EzRun ESC can be downloaded from HobbyKing's website HERE

BSD VIPER XST = CALDERA 10E......Also, the Caldera 10E is also sold as the BSD VIPER XST TRUCK. Exact same truck, exact same parts but slightly cheaper.

Hey guys!!
I just traded my Duratrax Evader this past weekend for a Redcat Caldera 10E and well im just going to say that most of the bad things ive heard about Redcat really arent so bad. So far i have severly beat mine, i tried to break it, and i have but nothing i wasnt able to fix myself.

As for the steering issues i havent seen anyone mention the turnbuckle ends being to tight, on mine the steering was slow and sloppy when i got it, infact thats why the guy traded me, he couldnt figure out why it wouldnt steer and him being a beginner i guess he just gave up.
So i tightened up my servo saver, un hooked the servo arm from the servo bell crank and checked to see how freely the steering was and i tell you what it took a good amount of force to push and pull it, i backed off all of the screws in the steering joints and everything freed up quite well and it turns very good now.

Mine is as most "Compltley Stock"  as far as i know it still has the original pinion and spur gear but the motor is running WAY to hot i mean cooking hot, bad enuff it burned my thumb and i now have a blister on it lol.  So i pulled the pinion off and checked for any stress in the drivetrain and all seems well it rolls smoothly and the spur spins easily, with my other thumb lol.
Just wonder what others have done if anything to keep things cool? I did add on a castle blower motor cooler but it does not fit snugly to the motor so i'm going to have to come up with something else.

I may try and get a few pics posted later, i moved my RX and switch to the top rear center brace and positioned the ESC in the ceter of the radio/esc tray, it just seemed more feesable way of doing things but im still changing things up.

Super duper hot and the Castle blower no more workie!!
Seriously considering calling Redcat to find out what i need to do other than down grade the pinion cause i like the speed, Clocked today with a GPS on a 2s 5000mah 30c battery and i topped out at 34.9 mph and drove over a mile, somehow the gps shut off so i didnt get exact distance lol.
I mean killer HOT!

I finally emailed Redcat today im sick of my motor over heating! i want to know why a completly stock unmolested truck is cooking the motor so hot, i dont know exact temps but i can tell my motor is running way to hot and after i run a full pack through it im sure its easily over 200 degrees, im surprized the motor hasnt cooked completley yet, but just recently its started to thermal shut down because its so hot, and its not the ESC its the motor. Ill post back if i get anywhere with redcat but from what ive read i wont so maybe i'l just come back and bash em when they blow me off!!! HA!

first of all i love this thread!

I picked up a Caldera about a month ago and i'm ready to upgrade it!  This is my first RC car in 20~ years so i need some help!

After reading the whole tread i went with:
Turnigy 5200mAh 2S 30C Hard-Case Car Lipo P
http://hobbyking.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=14991

Turnigy Accucel-6 50W 6A Balancer/Charger
http://hobbyking.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=18066

hobby king seems to have great prices but my charger has been back ordered for 2-3 weeks now and it seems that common buying from them.

After running for 10~ time on stock batteries i'm starting to lose screws....Where can i find replacements?  is there a kit?
the best i could find is this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-REDCAT-RACING-CALDERA-10E-SHORT-COURSE-SCREW-SET?item=280801413123&cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D6859236976342858713
but thats for the cladera short course truck...but how different can they be?

i also picked up some lock tight blue for future lose screws.

Sounds like from the tread i need to upgrade my wheels/hubs to aluminum?  what did you buy? and where?

Hi all,

I'm hoping this is the thread for the entire Caldera line: I just bought a SC 10E and so far it has been great! Some problems with the steering, but I'll ask support about it. I've started to write up a review with pictures here.

Where does everyone order their parts from? Should I be looking for Exceed/BSD/Himoto parts as well?

Thanks!

I haven't seen a center diff option, though I wish their was as I think it would help the handling. My Caldera SC handles fine using smooth throttle or medium-high bursts... but if you pin it travelling half-speed or at a standstill it will fishtail the rear around every time, even in a straight line. I'm playing with tires, camber, ride-height and front/rear diff oils to try to prevent it. Right now I think you can also only order 1 size of spur gear (51t)?

Speaking of gears, the Caldera's (at least the SC version) come with a 13-tooth pinion that's a brass colour (may actually be brass). After 10 packs mixed stock-NiMH and 2s lipo the teeth were work down to a knife-sharp edge - and by the time the pinion gets that bad it starts to wear the spur faster too.. I would buy a cheap steel pinion at the same time I buy the truck: something like a Traxxas 3943. I just put a 16-tooth steel in mine but it's _slightly_ too tight... 15t is probably the max the motor mount has adjustment room for.

I just ordered 3 or these for another project: but I wish I had waited another week or so to see what UltimateRC has to say about them. They seem to be about the same value as a HobbyKing ESC (cost a bit more) but I'm willing to try something new, and their programmabilty looks interesting.

I ran the stock setup with 3s lipos and had no problems bashing offroad - the motor temperature never went over 60-degrees C and the ESC was barely warm. So you probably don't need a new ESC with the stock motor. But I'm putting in a spare Castle 4600kv for some speed runs, so I'm going to pull the stock motor+ESC for another project and put in a BrushlessHobbies 120a.

If I were to guess at a mapping to Traxxas, I would say

Redcat Caldera 10E -> Traxxas Stampede VXL 4x4
Redcat Caldera SC 10E -> Traxxas Slash VXL 4x4
Redcat Caldera XB 10E -> No equivalent, unless they do a 4x4 version of the Bandit VXL like they did with the Stampede

There's not really aftermarket support for Redcat: right now the only "upgrades" I can find come from Redcat themselves. Look at the parts list in the back of your manual (or online). They have upgrades like:
- rear swaybar
- ride height screws
- motor heatsink
- metal wheel hex sets, shock towers, front+rear hubs, front hub carrier, front+rear hinge pin carriers, and shocks
- metal steering link

I've ordered the ride height screws and metal steering link (which is backordered).

Ok xmod3563 it looks like the tires in question are from a 4x4 stampede. I've looked at the new tires on the Caldera and am not too impressed. Check out:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-LIGHTLY-USED-TRAXXAS-STAMPEDE-4X4-WHEELS-TIRES-2-8-TALON-12MM-TRA-3669A-1-10-/130672394997?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e6cae82f5

and compare the tread.

Yeah PetRock the ESC was a shameless pull from UltimateRC but it really looks promising. When I had the Caldera in my hands the stock elec. systems and tires were a little dissapointing but it'll do for less than 200. The Caldera 10e platform is being picked up for the local school districts vehicle of choice for the RC Car Club. More food for thought and I need more reasearch...and cash.

the great thing about the caldera is all the aftershock, backdraft, earthquake electric and gas versions are using the same chassis so alot of the parts interchange i know me being a dealer i can get any of the billet chassis components for these trucks makes them super sturdy as well (not that they aren't already)
