Painting is 80% complete....Sewing the Lozenge now, I still have to cut the cowl, and finish a bunch of detail work but she's getting there.

I got a few hours of work in today. I ended up doing the wing tips just like you Jim. Carving a block is much nicer than forming the sheeting.

I did go a different route for the wing spars. I ended up buying a sheet of 6ply 1/4in plywood and cutting the spar size I need on a table saw. I figure it will make for an extra strong wing.

It seems like deja vu all over again!!

...looks good, Joe. I used to hate the idea of carving balsa but now it doesn't bother me. I have various sanding blocks that I make out of pieces of wood or balsa that make shaping easy. When the sandpaper on the blocks gets dull I can just glue a new piece on with Ca.

So, Jim, how's the Schuckert coming along? This 'un's just waiting clement weather...No dummy engine or spinner as yet, 1/4 scale, 12.5 lb, ST G2023. Balances about right 'as is'. Looking forward to it.

NICE!!

I have the fuselage colors ready to go. I'm just waiting for some warmer weather so I can paint it out in the garage. I was able do the lozenges inside because I was using an airbrush and there's not much overspray. For the big areas of the fuselage and cowl I want to use the auto touchup gun.

Well it wasn't really clement, 15 kn or so across the runway, but it took off across anyway, and went up like a lift. Needed just a bit of down trim at 1/2 throttle for 'S&L' and turns with alacrity, 50% A/R mixed and no real reason to change that so far. Loops are easy with a bit of speed, rolls are slow and need rudder assistance and are not axial and it needs to be well nose up to finish level, but not as sluggish as my Pfalz. The thing responds to power changes with altitude change, as it should. Bumbles along nicely at high power/speed and looks very nice on a low slow pass, but as you can imagine, it was pointing 30 deg into the breeze to go down the runway. Can't say anything about the ground handling, wasn't on long enough to really waggle the rudder more than a bit, and with the wind speed close to touchdown speed there wasn't any ground roll/time for things to get out of shape when landing. Power off it comes down steep, and slows quickly, but that could well have just been the wind speed/ground speed thing, might look different in the calm. Landed cross field, of course. Easy to fly, got good comments from the crowd, first flight went off OK. Wind was still increasing so packed it away, but that first one is in the logbook.

pimmnz,

I'm glad to hear that your flight went well. I look forward to seeing some in-flight photos.

Jim

Meanwhile, we got a spell of warmer weather and I was able to paint the fuselage. I still have to paint the lightning bolt on the side and dirty up the cowl area a little bit. Then I'm going to put on a clear coat of WarbirdColors satin clear (with cross-linker). Right now the paint is rather dull, but the clearcoat will make it look much brighter and a little shinier.

That looks superb man! It took me a couple of ticks to identify the bits of tape holding the paper (?) lightning bolt.

That's the paper pattern. I haven't painted them on yet.

I once saw this plane in a museum and if I'm correct the rotary rotated one way and the prop the other to counter torque thru a gear box? Great job!

Looks nice Jim, won't be long now, will it? I have some more time on mine, balances at 30% of the upper wing chord, stall is straight, nose well up, no wing drop and I haven't tried a spin yet. Landing with less breeze has indicated that if you try to do a tail up wheeler to maintain rudder control it gets very untidy very quickly, and this is hard on the lower aileron tip extensions. The best landings, with my model, is done with the tail skid touching about the same time as the wheels. It bounces on the bunjees but stays straight and the ground roll is short. Takeoff isn't much problem, it's off before you get much time to do anything. Other than that all the usual aeros are simple, it's stable in pitch and yaw, slightly unstable in roll. There is no taxi performance, as you might have guessed, so to help the take-off/landing you could tie the wheels together through the axle, it will help to keep things straight. Other than that, and most of it is pretty normal for these things, it is really nice to fly. I believe that photos were taken on the first flight, but I don't know who it was taking them, or where they might be. I will search. Keep up the momentum.

Oh, yes, by the way, can anyone confirm a suspition that the SH engine had a standard throttle, rather than the 'blip' thing? Just so I know weather to use a smooth throttle or blip the thing...

Thanks for the tips, pimmnz. i will keep those in mind.

I painted on the lightning bolts, dirtied up the cowl a little bit, and then sprayed the whole thing with Warbird Colors clear satin (with cross-linker added for fuel-proofing). Next up is to put a clear coat on the wings and stab, and the painting will be done.
I haven't even started on the guns yet.

I can't wait to see the dummy engine in the front, with spinner over top.

Yup, very sweet looking.

Took your advice Jim and did the polycrylic over the latex to tie the paint job together. Turned out awesome and the DR 1 should look good in the air.

Thanks.

I'm going to spray the wings and stab today with a coat of Polycrylic. I used Warbird Colors clear on the fuselage. I prefer to work with the Polycrylic but the fuselage, especially the cowl area, needs to be protected from raw gas.

Looking terriffic Jim, have you installed some more light in your dungeon? Looks a bit brighter than usual in that last pic. The elevators area lozenge right? Hows your flying weather shaping up? How soon do you think till the maiden? So many questions.lol

I did the final engine installation and tried on the spinner backplate and a prop. That's a 26" prop! I still have to cut the slots in the spinner for the prop and then paint it. I don't think there will be much dummy engine showing.

The weather here is beautiful today but I have to do some yard work. I probably won't make it out flying today

Thsi plane is real close to being flyable!
