Status: offline 		Seeing as there always seems to be a "Best Warbird" thread going on, I decided that a "Worst Aircraft" thread would be equally entertaining.
Rules:
Must have entered production: No one off prototypes.
Anything pre WW1 not allowed.
Warbird, GA, airliner, anything goes

Reasons can be as diverse as political, financial, structural and production difficulty, and just poor designs.
Problems arising from sloppy maintinaince and unrelated problems (weather etc) not allowed.

Status: offline 		Oh - Bonus points for anyone who is able to prove that famously good aircraft were all hype.


Personally, I believe the worst production aircraft was either the Yokosuka MXY7 Ohka or the Bachem Natter.
The Ohka is most famous as the only aircraft in history designed to kill it's own pilot in Kamikaze attacks. Of the ones deployed, they were not very effective, and caused little overall damage. It was usually paired with a G4M bomber, which was also easy to shoot down, with minimal armour.

The Natter was a rocket interceptor powered by a Walter rocket motor and armed with a pod of unguided missiles in the nose. After the mission, the pilot would bail out, and jetteson the rocket for recovery. The first flight ended in disaster when the furniture hinge used to hold the canopy failed, killing the pilot.

Both were of very poor quality wooden construction, and killed more pilots than enemies. The only reason I can see that they were not the worst was that the production numbers were quite low.

The R1/R2 was literally a combination of two crashed aircraft.

Designed by Dr. William Christmas, the wings were intentionally left unbraced as to allow them to flap while flying. He used a brand new engine he some how aquired from the military, and one of their test pilots. First flight: Wings came off, pilot killed.
He built a second, not telling the Army he had flown the aircraft, and aquired a second engine. This aircraft was shown on display as "The safest and easiest to fly aircraft available".
First flight: Wings came off, pilot killed.

He then billed the army for his "revolutionary wing design".

Status: offline 		The SPAD A-2 had an obsrever that sat in a 'pulpit' mounted in front of the tractor airscrew. Heaven help the observer in noseovers.

GeeBees were great, purpose built aircraft and only crashed though human error except for the 'Z'. The crash of the 'Z' is speculative but it is thought to be due to the fuel cap unscrewing then coming thru windscreen. That would prolly 'trip me up'! Florence Klingsmith put an oversized engine on her 'Y' against the Granvilles' advice. She pulled the fabric off the overstressed airframe, crashed and died- knocked her shoes off. Z.Granville crahed and died avoiding an idiot that walked onto the field as he was landing. He had enough airspeed to 'jump' over the fool but not enough room to throttle up and go around. R. Boardman crashed an 'E' attempting a loop just after takeoff! He lived... for a while until he crashed another GeeBee overloaded with fuel in a tank he added behind the c.g.-again, against the Granvilles' advice. The QED crashed and the Mexican pilot, Francisco Sarabia, drowned when someone left a rag in the cowling to get sucked into the carburetor. He was a great pilot. Thaw banged a wingtip and withdrew from a race (smart decision making) and Haizlip rolled one up in a ball trying to land and lived to tell about it. MarK Granville crashed the Ascender performing low level antics and hurt his back but didn't get killed. Jimmy Doolittle and Lowell Bayles had nothing but praise for GeeBees and, as you know, never put a scratch on them. L.Bayles even had an oil leak during a Bendix race.

The R1 and R2 were not production.  Besides that they were good aircraft, just had a visiblity problem.  Not uncommon for racers of the day.  Gee Bee sold lots of differant aircraft as far as I know only the R1 and R2 were considered unsafe, and that was mostly due to their bumble bee appearance.

Avro Tudor:

A bit of a disaster. It killed the designer when the ailerons were rigged backwards, several dissapeared over the Bermuda Triangle, and the stability problems it faced were never fully solved.

Most were purchased by BSAA.

Status: offline 		The Gee Bee Z had aileron flutter. It went from an R-985 powered 230 mph airplane to an R-1340 powered 300 plus mph airplane. Little was known of this stuff at that time. Granny came up with the gas cap thing. The R1 and R2 had ailerons 100% mass balanced after some tests at the Langley wind tunnel by Bob Hall. Hall went on to design for Grumman, Hellcat,Tigercat, Bearcat, etc.
Kermit Weeks has a Gee Bee Z that had the ailerons buzz during high speed flight, he had them re-balanced but hasn't flown it since to my knowledge.
The only "worst" there was about the Gee Bee line was they were subject to the worst myth fostering of any aircraft company. The sensationalism of the 30's reporting has been carried on as fact for so long it permeates the subject. Delmar Benjamin flew his R-2 for 1200 hours in cross country and aerobatic shows for ten years and there was never an accident or incident.

Amazing performance; for eight minutes.
The fuel, a combination of F-Stoff and T-Stoff was extremely corrosive, and many accidents occoured. The Me-163 blew up on the ground, on landing, and in flight. Pilots were dissolved by fuel leaks in the cockpit. Slave labourors sabatoged their work (I know I would).

One was recovered in unflown condition, with steel spike jammed between a bulkhead and the fuel tank, on which was written:
"My heart isn't in my work"

The aircraft were built by captured workers, literally slaves; many were shot and worked to death. Another reason this was an awful aircraft.

Status: offline 		Lockheed Super Electra L-188. They were prone to falling apart in midair due to vibration and turbulence. P-3 Orions aside (fixed vibration with a prop synchronizer) not a very successful design if you are an airline that likes to sell tickets to passengers who want to make it to their destinations.
