......a few pics of how I went about building the ailerons and flaps........the flaps were build according to the plans with the exception of the hinge location .........the plans also show a 1/8" overlap of the top planking to close the gap between the flap and wing necessary to allow for the hinges.......this in not correct.......the 1/8" overlap is on the flap itself.....the results are the same, but the real flap had an Alum strip that fill the gap..........the ailerons were also built to the plans with the exception of the hinge location and the linkage to the servo.........I also omitted the solid leading edge in favor of a built-up one with ribs and planked with 1/64" ply......

Thanks for the tip on the material Murphey...........I have been to fabric stores, camping supplies and finally to a pet store.......I did find the type of weave at Pet Smart.........it was a Cat collar........it had the stitching and the correct width and only came in black, which might be okay, could also be painted........the military ones were od green........it was also a little to thick.........but I will be using a crew, so the belt will not show as much as one lying in an empty seat.

Rich.

Very cool but I meant the Don Smith model. These are pretty rare birds in the model world I guess. Bill

Thanks Murphey............the belt material looks great......but I plan to make the hardware...........a 3" wide belt in 1/5 scale would be 0.6".......so the closes they have is 0.625, so the 5/8" material would work just fine...........1/5 scale would be 2.4" = 12"

....For those of you still considering a three peice wing, here's a few pic's........since you have to add a rear spar then you can eleminate all of the center section ribs and planking and install a scale like dropped floor...........something to think about.

Rich.

Murphey........here are the dimensions of the landing light that you requested.....as far as I can tell, they were left grey as they came from Grimes on all military versions.........but were often painted same color as wing on civilian versions........the Songbird was grey on the bottom.....

Rich - I got my Grimes lights built and operating. Then when I painted them the paint went right through the liquid mask I was using and totally ruined the lens!! So now I have to build a second set, but it won't be as hard as the first set was. However I am really having trouble getting the white spinners. Do you have a suggestion for a source? The Dubro spinners are too pointed. The Goldberg look so good I'd hate to have to use some other ones not shaped as nicely. I can get yellow Goldberg from Towers, but since white is the color of the wing it would be nice to get the white. It is hard to hide the yellow with white paint. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!

Jim, very sorry about the paint problem........what type of paint did you use?..........the liquid mask is water base and is resistant to laquer and enamel base paints........even other water base paints when allowed to dry completely.........instructions on the bottle recommend 3 to 4 coats........so, if only one coat were applied sufficient coverage would not have been achieved...........also, remove any finger prints before applying mask......water and oil wont mix........try again using 4 coats on the scrap material that is removed from the back of the lens just for a test............in regard to the white CG spinners..........it just so happens that I have a set that I can send to you........do you also need the Gordon lens?............I also have an extra set........not the hole lamp, but the clear lens only.............also have a pair of the chrome reflectors in case you happen to need them also.......let me know......all I need is a mailing address and they will be on the way to your front door........

Rich.

.....Jim, I almost forgot, after painting the lamp and before you use the circle cutter..........apply at least four 1/4" square peices of masking tape, one on top of the other at the center of the lens.........then locate as close as possible the exact center and establish a point to swing the cutter........push the pivot point of the cutter into the tape..........this will protect the lens and provide a pivot point necessary to create a perfect circle

PA23180...go back to the beginning of the thread...there was a lot of discussions on the topic of engine selection. Generally, if you do glow, something in the 1.5 CI range., Gas something in the 23cc to 26cc. Planning a build?

Pete:
Go to the beginning of this thread. Your question is what started this entire thread, then others came on board with many, many great building ideas.

Here is a photo of the Songbird graphics from Cal-Grafix. I still have a few more coming, like the "NO STEP" , "NO PUSH". And I took the easy way out on the landing lights...non operational, but very good looking graphic representation.

Wow Murphey, decals! Does this mean we are getting near completion? Can't wait for somebody's first maiden flight. You guys got me going on the retractable lights now. Mine is kind of on hold, still gathering parts. Gotta get my hanger in order for flying season. Gonna be 50 today out there. A heatwave! May get in some flight time!
