Status: offline 		Thanks Chic...........Thats okay, it will look great with just a few details..........just adding the pushrods and plug wires will give it a finished look..........of course there are no limits to the detail that can be added and that's what I personally enjoy doing.........building in the detail is the easy part.......researching for this detail is the hard part, but also fun for me.........and then desigining it on AutoCad to fit my project.....this is a great hobby!!.............I also enjoy building mahogany boats of the thirties, fourties and fifties.......also with infinate tetail........nothing more beautiful than a Chris-Craft Triple Cocpit Run-about from the thirties......

My project is still on hold due to packing up my workshop prior to moving house. It has allowed me time to think. I was planning to use 2 x Saito FG-21 gas four stroke engines. But it seems the reputation of these gas Saitos is not great. There is a long running tread on this forum with many tales of woe about the FG-20 & Fg-21 Saitos. So I'm reconsidering. What gas engines would fit well in the T-50 cowls and be 100% trouble free? I'm also tempted by the glow 4-stroke route. I have in mind a couple of Saito 125 four strokes. Any thoughts from those of you flying T-50's

Status: offline 		David, if you want to go the gas route ......consider the Zenoa G-26, unless you want a four-cycle and the sound of it.............Murphey has installed the G-26 and thinks they are reliable, ........I, on the other hand opted for the Saito 150 glo four-cycle.......this engine also fits within the confines of the cowl........but just barley.........the cowl has a nine inch radius.....the height of the Saito from centerline to top of valve cover is also nine inches......a glove fit............I have since decided to install a pair of OS Gemini 160 twins......my reasons are many...........first of all, I have a friend named Ross....and.......he flew these engines as far back as twenty years ago!!!.......he did not keep a log on the engine hours, but he did on the amount of fuel they consumed over their lifetime...... how about eighty gallons!!....( they are still in perfect shape).....

......as far a reliability goes, another 160 after consuming sixty gallons blew a jug in midflight...........the engine kept running and Ross brought her down and even txied to the pit.........now thats reliability...

....as mentioned above my first reason was reliability......my second reason is ease of installation and space within the cowls....since these are twins the cylinders are smaller and not quite so tall allowing for plenty of space around the engine..........

My third reason is that when installed vertically opposed they work perfectly with the configuration of the dummy Jacobs L4-MB seven cylinder engine, in that the top cylinder can be made removable for flight....and the bottom cylinder of the OS will have a natural air passage between the two bottom cylinders of the dummy engine............But, I am going the full scale route, detail, detail detail...etc.

.....My final reason is, that beautiful sound of those twins at idle.............remember, you'll have four cylinders throbbing away....:"sweet"

If your going to get into the casting mode I buy a set also and detail them myself. You just can't get Jacobs that scale anyplace I've been able to find. I'm not in a rush so whenever. Just send me price and address and I'll prepay.

Status: offline 		..........No problem Joel, as I told Chic I will be happy to.........and........because Christmas is just around the corner and I am in the spirit of the holliday...........these castings will be available to any of you guys.....and....(gals).......for the cost of material only.........it's cheap!....but well worth doing to help get you guys ......and, (gals).....movitated!..............I can actually cast all of the parts for two engines in about an hour.....so, you see it is not a labor intensive endevor.........I do have a pair of molds which help speed up the casting process, plus the fact that the resin sets up in ninty seconds......so, I have to be quick!...........I have also set up a jig for cutting the the 28 pushrod housings from .025 alum tubing that I will include............the cylinders will have the studs and bolts cast into their bases.......but the gearcase will be attcahed to the crankcase with the ,080 brass hex head machine screw, so it can be removed and modified to fit your particular engine ..........so, with the exception of the plugs and wires you will have all of the parts need to detal to your liking..............and, just between us guys.......(and gals)..........I will be glad to work with you on the finer details also.........

Fantastic looking Jacobs!  I'm very impressed.  I'm building a 1/5 scale Waco YMF -5 and that would look great in the cowl.  I would have to redo my firewall to get the engine set back far enough to mount your dummy, as I'm also using the Gimini 160. I would love a price on what you are willing to sell.  I would also have to get the prop extension made as well. 

FYI, there are a lot of guys on the Waco forum looking for this engine.

One question:  What is the minimum distance between the fire wall to the face of the prop extension?  That's assuming you are using the provided O.S. engine mount.

Status: offline 		....Hi Joe, I am back from my trip to Georgia...........first, the answer to your last question regarding the overall length of this installation is 6.094 inches from firewall to face of prop extension with the OS mount installed..........without the OS mount the distance is 5.50.

.....Joe, I will be glad to supply you with the casted parts that I have made avaliable to our group for the cost of material........the cost of resin to cast one engine is about $18.......which will include the seven cylinders, one crankcase, one gearcase and a cap to cover the prop extension hub when using a static display prop..........the cylinders will have the mounting studs molded into them.......the gearcase  will be bolted to the crankcase with 14 SIGPMHB880 brass hex head machine screws plus 7 on the crankcase, 7 on the gearcase and 8 on the hub cap....a total of 36 bolts drilled and tapped........they come 12 in a package for $4.79 x 3......I will send photos of the parts to better clarify.

I plan to start casting on 12-26-12 to 12-30-12.......then, I need to get back to work on the Bobcat.......I did make a promise to the guys that it will be complete and ready to fly before 'Bomber Field" in September of 2013.

Joe, I have a very good friend who is also with the WACO Brotherhood......he is "Bigbird #70".......he lives about ten miles from me.
......also, I sent parts for my Grimes landing lights to "Supercub Man #56) of the WACO Brotherhood for his Waco ARE........check it out, pg 25, post 606.........He lives in Canada.....

Status: offline 		have you thought about buying the bolts in bulk from Micro fasteners? For instance, 100 0-80 hex head brass bolts is only $7.80 instead of $4.79 for 12.

Status: offline 		..........well, looks like my pilots and ground crew have dusted themselves off and came out of the closet.........klick and klack went right to work on the Jacobs......torqueing the bolts on the gearcase, installing the carb air intake....and installing the Hamiltons......nice work guys, keep it up, we have eight months to completion..............my pilot Nick, and co-pilot Jake have been brushing up on procedures in the "ole book".........now, lets go take a peek and see how they are progressing.........
