......good to hear that...........the response from some of my non-modeling friends are............well, I guess you have resorted to playing with dolls now?............my answer to that was..........."girls play with dolls"............these are "Action Figures".........so, does that mean they really think we are playing with "Toy Airplanes"?????...........

Rich.

My stock response has always been, "You push toy airplanes across the floor and go 'pffffffttttt.' I build scale models."

In your case, just tell them you are building a miniature airplane that will fly like a real one and the action figures are your crew. Every airplane needs a crew, miniature or not.

....Joe, this is a photo of the casted parts and the hardware.......

Hi Rich, and Merry Christmas!

That is a nice package at a good price. I'd love to be able to put that in my Waco, but I only have about 4 3/4" from the firewall to the front of my cowl. As you know the left exhaust pipe is pretty far forward, in my case only about 1/2 inch behind the cowl lip. I'm afraid it would be almost impossible to use your Jacobs in this model with the space available.

Thaks again for the offer...... Boo hoo...........

Joe

Hi Rich,

Is it too late to change my mind on the cast dummy Jacobs? I may not be able to do it properly (full frontal with all cylinders) but I do want to see if I can make it look close.

If not too late, let me know the final price and how you would like to be paid and I'll get the payment to you.

Thanks a lot!

Joe

.....sorry for the late response Joe........I was away for Christmas...........Back to your installation problem with the limited forward cowl space that you have available............the stock OS twin utilizing the engine mount is 4.75"  from the firewall to the front of the prop drive.......without the cast alum mount you will gain another .625" of clearence.......of course, you will still have to use a crankshaft extension........one of the ways that I gained space to install the twins with the dummy engines was to recess the firewall, allowing the engine with the cast mount to set as far back as possible and still retain the scale outer dimensions............Joe, I can also supply you with a condensed version of the Jacobs engine........that is by reducing the length of the dummy engine by a 1/4"........I can reduce the thickness of the cylinders and crankcase by .25" if that will help.........I was going that route myself until I got the idea of recessing a portion of the firewall...........Joe, I will send you the reduce length kit......and you can play around with it........and if you can get it to fit, then you can renburse me for the materials.......otherwise, just send it back, not a problem..........in the meantime, I will include the latest photos of my installation showing how to gain the necessary space to install the Jacobs............Enjoy

Rich.

Rich,

I never get tired of looking at an artist's work!  Your designing and workmanship is outstanding to say the very least! WOW!

If I had this information about seven months ago, I could have squeezed this into the front of my WACO. As it is, I would like to take a look at your shortened version.  I may be able to go back maybe 3/4 inches by leavihng off the O.S. Mount and removing a 5/16"extension on the firewall. I did that to put the thrush washer about 1/4 inch past the end of the cowl.  Then I will need to get a prop extension made...........

At least it's worth a look. I'll send you a PM with my address. There is no rush on this, as I'm working on my tailwheel right now. I made a custom tailwheel and the spring I used is not strong enough to support the fuselage with the tail feathers installed, etc....   Back to the drawing board........

Joe

...Thanks for the nice complement Joe...........Joe, let me send you the short version and you can experiment with it and I will throw in some extra cylinders in case you mess a few up with your installation.......also, I will send you a copy of the prop extension that I designed and had made by a friend who has a lathe.....(hope to have one in my shop in the near future).....anyway, you can reduce it's length and have it machined on the lathe if you have one..........if we come up with the right combination of parts to fit your application......then, you can pass it along to the Waco Brotherhood.........

Rich....

Rich,

That would ge great!  I'm pretty sure you will hear more from the Waco Brotherhood.  There has been a lot of talk about having someone do this..  Williams Bros. seemed interested several years ago, but thus far, nothing.

I look forward to getting your parts.  I'll be sure to post a few good remarks on the Waco forum along with some photos...

Have a Happy New Year!

Joe

Thanks Joe.......since I cant afford to own the real one, then the next best thing is to build a minature version of it, right?......so, thats what we all do!.......if only we could reduce ourselves and set in the cockpit..........now, I'am thinking like a kid again........

'Rich,

Build it so you can put a GoPro in the cockpit.  It's not quite the same, but pretty close!

Yes, it is. It's not the smallest available, but I have seen a lot of stuff on YouTube that was shot with the Go Pro.  It looks real good.

If you want to consider that option, an onboard camera, you might want to do a little reasearch.  There are a lot available, and they can get pretty small and still have good resolution.

.....tell me more!!!.........will they also record audio?.........so you can hear those engines throbbing away, and the wind whistling by?
I have seen video from flying models, but never intertained the thought of installing one myself.........but, the idea appeals to me now........the Bobcat has a very generous cockpit and cabin, so installing a system like this would be an interesting project all by itself....and it can be installed  after she is finished........right?

Rich,

A guy in my fly fishing club uses one a lot to record his fishing trips. I'm pretty sure they are alos (at least some models) completely waterproof. He hs taped one on a pole and sticks it under water to record the fish while he's fighting it.  And yes, the do record audio. He talks while he's fighting the fish or while csting.  These appear to be approximately two inches  square  or close to that.

I"ll try to get a few links to some videos he has done and post them for you to see.  Some of the filming seems to be wide angle shots while others appear to be normal views.

Joe
