Al, what was you final weight? I'm trying to decide which motor to use, YS-140, Saito 180 or Moki 180. I bought the 4/40 dubro pull pulls and I agree with you it is a MM setup for the elevators, seems to be their normal accepted design as they almost all have that setup. Still detailing my cockpit.

Don't have a final all up weight yet. haven't mounted the cowl and waiting on the prop hub from Tru Turn. I'll let you know next week.
Using two of the Dave Brown pushrods for the rudder and elevator is less of a hassle than trying to get the pull-pulls on, it seemed to me.

OK guys. Really dead forum here. But I do have a question. Mine's done except for final-mounting the cowl and canopy and balancing. But re balancing. Should it be done rightside up or upside down or both? The general rule, or so I've always been told and so far it's worked for a number of years, is that balance should be done w/ the main mass on the low side, which for most low wing airplanes means upside down. But as you know, the main mass on this one is in the wing center section, and that big gear extends down from that. So upside down may not be the way to go. Comments? Suggestions? Bob, how'd you do yours?
Attaching some pics; maiden should be this weekend.
Manfred, no AUW yet. After I get it balanced I'll let you know if you still need the info.
Thanks
Al

Quite honestly Al I don't think it makes that much difference. I've been doing this for nearly 25 years and I don't recall ever balancing a low wing model upside down. Thus far I have still managed to get the CG in the right spot although I do usually err on the side of caution to start with so maybe that has something to do with it!

I am thinking about getting this plane and I was wondering if it is tail heavy like the CMP 80" Zero? If so I will use a Brielli 46GT gasser in it. If it is not a tail heavy plane like the CMP 80" zero I will use a CRRC 26 gasser. What do you all think?

That sounds like a plan to me. Mine has the OS120ax 2-stroke in it, w/ the OS matal mount, Pitts style muffler and a ply spacer. I had to add a bunch of weight to the nose to get it balanced. Not sure how much just now. Whwn I gwt over to my shop today or tomorrow I can look it up.
Airplane flies great, tho. With that wing, I think it'd be fine at 30 lbs!

W/ my setup the Val took 1lb 12oz on the firewall and motor mount to balance. Weight out of the box was 10lbs 7oz. Final RTF AUW is 16lbs 6.1oz.
Good luck.

Did anyone use a dle30? Just got the arf and noted the need for 2 degrees down thrust. Is the cg on the spot per the directions or did it vary if so how far back? Thanks for the help

I've had one in the box for a year and was thinking about a DLE20 but if you have to add a lot of weight I don't know may need a 30.

Hello all, Anyone building the Val? I have one on the build table now. I have Tys cockpit installed and the engine mounted. I am using the 36cc rear exhaust Petro. Will start on the tail next. Has any one flown with a gas engine? How does it fly over all? Will post pic. soon.

Hi,

This is my Val, with MWS 26 petrol engine, CG at 132 mm from the leading edge, AUW 7,1 Kgs, working canopy (a disaster, I'm currently working in the release 3 ), dropable bomb from HobbyKing and wing in three pieces. I will try to find and post some pictures showing the modifications if anyone is interested.

I can't say much about the flight, because after take off and four trimming circuits, the engine died in the wrong place and had to land in the rough. No big damage, but not flyable for a while.. Anyway, she is very gentle, and not overpowered with this engine.

I sold the one I made the cockpit for to a freind of mine and he has it on electric. It is one of the best flying planes he has ever had. Nice slow flyer and a breeze to land...

Tye, Just finished the cockpit install. It came out great as all of your cockpits do. Still had plenty of room to mount the servos.

Its surprising to me that there isn't more info/build logs on this bird. A great WWII plane that looks great WITHOUT having to deal with retracts, I figured there would be more talk. So here is my question if anyone can help me with an opinion; I bought this motor:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__6479__52cc_Gas_engine_w_CD_Ignition_3_2kw_Overbore.html

figuring an 81" warbird would need nose weight anyway, and it really is just a 45 in size and power. My thinking was if I need more wt. might as well make it useful (and I like having more rather then not enough power anyway). Looking at greenbarons pics from post 116, it looks tighter then I expected. I initially used what I have seen and read about the CMP 80" Zero as a starting point for this thinking. Any opinions on if this engine will fit in the cowl? And also, did you guys have to add nose wt, or will this motor be too heavy? I have been looking forward to this build as I always said that if a decent fixed gear plane came out I would jump on it, just haven't pulled the trigger yet.
Thanks.

Concerning nose weight, I placed a ply tray on top of the engine to carry the CDI (Enelop 6 elements) and Rx (Enelop 4 elements) batts. The CDI is also placed in a bracket inside the cowl, and I had to add some lead, I cannot say exactly how much, but around 160-180 grs. You can see it in the batteries box floor.

The cowl is not so big for a plane of this size, so you will need to butch it for any gasser, bigger the engine, bigger the cowl holes.. With the MVVS 26 she is slighty underpowered for my taste, if I had to redo I will try with the PTE36R, as it seems to be powerful enough, and because the rear inverted Pitts style muffler in order to reduce the holes in the cowl.

Thanks for everyone's input on my Evo 26cc. Keeping it simpler, I ordered instead the 81 inch Aichi D3A1 VAL for 26cc or 120AX. First observations, it'll take a lot of nose weight, don't use the hardware (excuses to go to the hobby shop), the wing is a big dark green surfboard.

12-6-2011
You're really going to like the VAL. Junk all that nonsense re pull-pull on the rudder and elevator back in the taiul and go w/ pushrods. Mine has the OS120AX which is plenty of power, JR Sport 126MG servos all around except for the throttle. The specs for it weight added, balance point, total weight etc are over in my shop but if you're interested (or have any other questions) PM me and I'll get them for you. Airplane flies just great. You're right about the wing! One look at that thing and it's really clear that airplane was designed to lift boimbs.
A few pics attached.
Al

Well Al, I'll finally start my Val this week. I didn't see your post in "P-39 by ESM" until today, I guess I don't get messaged by email, will have to fix that. If my 120AX will be sufficient to pull a Val around, I'd rather do that than go gas. Any update on your Val this spring?
