Hey Guys,

Who has the best J-3 or L-4 Cub plans for scratch building, and sells them separate from the kit?

These are the plans that I know. At least the L-4 1/4 scale.

the problem with most of these Scale Cub kits is the fuselage width seems so much wider than the real thing ... Mine is pilot built up 1/4 J-3 and of course I love it but is still so much wider than the real one ...
I can only tell you that the sig 30 or 40 sized cub was the most to scale cub I ever owned ...
I would check your local airport and search a real one out .. whew they are knee knockers big time
hope that helps

check this cub out ... I would not have beleived it till I saw this ... radial cub
there is a tricycle geared cub also ... if I could find it again .. it would be posted
good luck

I'm building the busa 1/4 scale J3 and L4. There is some work to do to make it scale. The ailerons are top hinged, I changed it to bottom hinged as in scale. The stab is too far back and has to be moved forward. Thats the extent of the changes I've done. One thing to remember in the L4 is the top cabin structure is pretty weak with the greenhouse arrangement.

Sig's 1/5 J-3 is done the same way, with the hinges incorrectly on the top of the aileron. I don't understand why Sig or BUSA thought that would be easier; I plan to change mine too during the build (hopefully, this winter). Sig also omitted the half ribs in the wing, and has the wrong shape for the rear window. Sig used a true semi-circle for the rear window; it should be a "drooped D" shape. The fuselage width, however, is scale, as I checked that before buying the Robart gear.

Are you going to correct the rear window? I was wondering how hard that would be. It's a glaring error that everyone seems to notice...too bad Sig missed it.

I definitely will by removing/adding filler wood, but will have to cut a new window pane, since the one supplied with the kit is vacuum formed to the wrong shape. I'll also make other scale corrections, but all in all, the 1/5 kit is a good basis to start with (for a non-competition model).

they are sport models, and they top hinge them to provide differential aileron motion....the up going aileron goes up higher than the downward one, thus making it somewhat less rudder demanding......and easier to fly for the average modeler.

You can set the position of the control horn relative to the hinge line to give differential, regardless of where the hinge is. I don't really see how putting the hinge at the top helps anything. (And of course the position of the attachment of the control rod to the servo arm can provide differential too.)

GAP, I hope you'll post your corrections to the Sig 1/5 kit. Kit reviews are pretty useless about these things...just glowing reports with no attention to deviations from scale. It's hard to know whether to buy the kit if you don't know what it would take to make it scale. Glad to hear that the Sig kit is workable.

I will. I've gathered info from Banka, and am still looking for an opportunity to shoot some detail photos. I'll probably use the classic scheme of the Smithsonian's J-3, since I have personal connections to that aircraft.

I published 1/6 scale Cub plans many years ago in Scale R/C Modeler and worked pretty hard to make it exact scale. The prototype even had a trimmable in flight stabilizer. I still have the plans available. I built two at the time. I later donated the first to a Veteran's hospital, but I'm still flying the second. It was electric originally (in 1987) and is again now. It has also flown with a diesel, and an OS 30 2 stroke. It weighs 3 pounds 10 ounces the way it is now.

Plans are on my web site,
http://www.yolo.net/~jeaton/gems/6cub.htm

I really need to take some recent photos, I take a lot of pictures at our club's events, but I always forget to get pictures of my own airplanes.

John

I checked out your site and it looks like a really nice Cub. It must be a wonderful flier at such a light weight.

The 1/3 Neilitz (sp?) J-3 plan is pretty decent from what I remember. He uses dowels to mimic the tube structure. You have to actually build some steel or alum tube structure to tie gear, cabin and wing mounts together. A good set of 3-views and photos will give you the 'greenhouse' you need for the L-4. I have a set of the plans... somewhere...

The most accurate plans are the Nelitz 1/3 scale ones - he was a World Champion scale builder.
Larry Pierce (he's on this forum - LT Pierce)) has Bob's original mylars, so you can get a set of spot on plans printed from him - unlike some of the 3rd(or more) generation ones lurking on the web.

Everyone else seems to have compromised on a bunch of stuff - especially the cabin width.

There are a couple of build threads on RCU - here's one http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=10852958

Mine's nearly done - attached is a pic of the almost complete cabin to give you an idea of the accuracy of the plan - no model structure visible...

Cheers,
Mike

Severin Kit has to be the nicest ever and the most expensive ever. You want the best, get a real set from Wag Aero; good enough to build a real plane.

Thanks, Jim. I've done a lot of work on a 1/4 scale version but I haven't got them done. I'd like to replicate the centersection with two part wings but haven't got that sorted yet in a simple to work with method. At least there are good alternatives for strut material now.

John

Sort of - hiding in the scale tank you see in the pic is the Sullivan one! Didn't fancy leaks etc..
It does fill from the scale position however.

And to answer another question, the center section/wing fastening on a Nelitz Cub is scale - pic attached.

I would echo the Nelitz Cub being the most scale. The glaring thing I see with the Paolo Severin Kit is that the lower door hits the wing strut. Maybe I'm being petty and I'm sure it can be corrected. It just irks me. I feel Cubs should be flown with the door and window open.
