Come on, die cutting and balsa isn't that bad! And they do build nice aircraft that fly quite well! I like it so well I am more than doubling the 1:6.7 1-26D to a full 1:3 scale beginning last night. Should have a laser cut short kit out for it soon to go with our laser cut 70" span model.

Scott,

Do you still have the PT-17< Sterling Kit FS-20 in your possesion?

Tom

Yes, I still have it and will probably sell it. It's in great shape, just opened to examine contents and nothing is missing. The box is aged from being in storage for 25 years.

Hey guys, did you see the Lancer on e-Bay go for $130 + shipping today? Crazy! I would like to have had it, to go with my built Lancer SL-62, but when the bidding went over $80... Well there are just too many better kits available for just a little more than that! Such as the AAMCO Aeromaster bipe that went for $127 a couple of days ago.

What a great thread. I just discovered it today while looking for information on the Ringmaster R/C.

I remember flying Baby Ringmasters and Ringmaster Juniors as well as the same sizes in Flight Streaks. They were ALL great airplanes and I spent many weekend days at the schoolyard flipping props. I must've flipped a Thimble Drome Thermal Hopper a thousand times before figuring out what a tiny speck of dirt could cause. Boy, was I ready for fuel filters when I first heard of them years later. I still have a couple of Thermal Hoppers, but no more of those cage mounts that came with them. Anyone have one I could copy? I guess that should be for another thread.

I'm selling off some kits on eBay (NO Sterling kits, sorry) but was going to list this Sterling Ringmaster R/C which HAS BEEN BUILT AND FLOWN. I checked it out on the Sterling site (thanks to this thread) and found out it was the last kit in the FS series. "FS-41 R/C Ringmaster ARF" They actually called it an ARF but it really was an ARC (almost ready to cover).

Mine has an OS SF .46 which is almost new, and JR radio gear. I would sell it with or without the radio gear. Is there any interest?

Scott

There were both Ringmaster RC kit and ARC versions.
I built the ARC one, loved it. Great model.

HI, just surfin thru for kicks and noticed that some of you need plans for the PT-17, I believe I have a set including the metal cowling complerte and uncut, still in its container. The box is bent and taped and all the left over balsa, no parts, is still there. If someone wants this stuff let me know and we can make some kinda deal.

Hi, I am looking for plans for Sterling Models kit #FS37, a 1/2A Tri-Pacer. I do have the kit without plans. If possible, scan or take large pixel photo to mail to me. Need not be on scale, just need to see where parts go.

Thanks.

Just finished a mini Fledgling that I "changed" a tad to resemble a mini Ultra Stick. Kept the airfoil, chopped the nose and added new tail feathers. Dropped the landing gear to save weight and reduce drag. I used 1/16" birch ply from the firewall back to behind the wing saddle on the bottom to save on wear,(grass field).
I'm using a left-over GWS 6channel recv'r and micro servos for guidance, (aileron/rudder/elevator). Power is a Cox TD .049 running on 30% nitro.
I toyed with not incorporating rudder but want to see how she'll snap on long climbouts at full bore, lol...
I flattened the dihedral to a mere 1/8" under each wing tip. Dropped the stock wingtips and replaced with the Ultra Stick planform.
Anyway, I've got a few Sterling kits to build coming up...4 old ukies I want to convert to R/C, the Monocoupe 90A, the Mister Mulligan, a Corsair, F4U-1a and a Waco SRE. The R/C models are the 48" PT-19 and the 36" Corsair F4U. All are family heirlooms from my late Uncle who had purchased them new many years ago.
I actually built most of these same aircraft when I was a kid and flew 'em on wires with old Redhead .35's. I dislike electrics but appreciate the small size of the electronics they use so I'm back in the 1/2a business, LOL...
Once I get the mini covered, I'll post a few photos...

Love Sterling models...die-crunching and all!

My first C/L model was a Jr. Ringmaster, followed by a .35 size Ringmaster. I then built a Flying Fool, which I thought was the biggest, coolest model ever built! Redhead 29 and all. Yes, the die-crunching was frustrating at times.....but back then we didn't have laser cutting to compare it to. I think those early efforts taught a lot of us how to build.

Hello Sterling Enthusiasts:

I am a 61 year old "new kid" here and have a question.

I started building and flying Sterling control line models in the late 1950s. I stopped when called to military service in 1967. In the late 1970s I built a model of a Sterling PT-17, Kit #C-12, and it has been hanging in my office since then. When I built it I installed a McCoy .35 Redhead (what else?) and for many reasons have never flown it.

Since I have now retired I have been thinking about flying it for my grandkids because they have been asking me to. The original gold glow plug is missing and have no idea what type of glow plug or fuels available today would work without causing damage to the engine.

Does anyone know what type of plug will be appropriate and will the chemistry of the modern fuels work OK in a vintage McCoy .35 engine? Are their any gold replacement plugs available?

Thank you,

Beagle013

Beagle,
Finding a plug should be no problem, just insure that the piston does not contact the bottom of the plug. Tower Hobbies could be a good source. SIG has 20% and 25% all castor fuel available or use a mix of castor to synthetic. Do not use all synthetic as the McCoy is has a lapped piston. A trip to the local hobby store (LHS) should clear up any questions.
