A quick question to anyone that can help.   I have finished breaking in this engine and am about to put the cowl on, but I've realized that the engine is much much too far back! The cowl wont fit properly.  Could anyone that has been able to install the cowl measure the distance from the edge of their engine mount to the prop?  This would really help in figuring out where to drill my new holes.

I mounted mine as per instructions and it fit perfectly. The screw holes in the cowl are about 1/8"-1/4" from the edge.
I'll measure at lunch (doublecheck) and will get back with you with the dimension.

Okay, my plane is finished but I have one minor annoyance to try to fix. Understand, this is my first plane with mechanical retracts so I have not run across this problem before. When I turn on my receiver (with the transmitter already on) the retracts will often cycle fully or partially even though they are in the desired position and the transmitter switch is in the desired position. Then they settle down and all is good. This is very annoying if the plane is on the ground. To sum up, I am using the Hitec HS 75BB retract servos (two, each plugged into its own Rx channel) a JR 12X Tx and JR 9 channel Rx. Suggestions?

Did you happen to bind the tx and rx with the gear switch in the up position?  I'd say just try a rebind making sure that the switch is in the down position. Even if you did the first time, if anything it will force it to reset and might make it work.  Myy Ar7000 and dx7 dont move at all when switched on.

Yes, of course, that is the problem. I will re-bind with the gear down and all should be good. Thanks for pointing that out Lex. Now I am ready to go.

Sorry to hear and see your plane, but the question is, are you going to rebuild her?

But I feel your pain, I flew one through a tree as well, and the bad part my wife was watching me do it!  I heard about that one for weeks!

Bob418,

Yes, kinda like the 6 million dollar man, I can rebuilt it, stronger, faster, better...All for a cost.
The autopsy is underway, and list looks relatively straight fwd to rebuild.opened up the wing aand tail, and have begun the work. The fuselage has had a-lot more famage than 1st realized.
The bummer is that I've destroyed my LED lights the fuse lights work, but landing lights and wing tip items are snapped and these are low voltage non insulated wires that have severed inside the wing...Not what I was hoping to see.
I'll keep you guys posted on what becomes of her.

I successfully maidened my Texan II today. I'm flying it on a power 110 on 10s 4000 mAh packs with a 13x13.5 3 blade prop.  My first takeoff was accidently done on high rates and it was quite twitchy.  I got it turned onto low rates and it flew very nice.  Quite fast as might be expected on this setup.  The flaps I added helped on landings.  The E-Flite electric retracts worked well.  A fun plane to fly.  I got a couple more flights on it.  Should be some video in few days.

Bob, I will fly the maiden flight with a 4000 mah 8s and the 16x8 APC as I want to be sure to have enough power. With that set-up my plane should come in right at 10.6 lbs but I will re-weigh it when I get ready to fly. It will be a little while as I want blue skies for nice pics to show my son ("See, I can fly one of these things too...!). I also have another build I have to get done.

jw, good job! Yes, post the video. Was the thing a virtual rocket ship with that 110 and 10s set-up? Do you fly off grass? I was just wondering how much abuse the Eflight retracts can take. We fly off grass here but it is relatively well groomed. What kind of flight times do you get and how many mah do you end up putting back in the cells at the end? Did you use the recommended throws on low rates? I set mine up very conservative on low rates but maxed it out on high with lots of expo. Nice to know what to expect.

Ahhhh, i just figured it out! I guess I continuously looked over this part of the instructions. 135mm from firewall to base of the prop.

Here's the video of my maiden flight.  Had the aileron throw set way too high.  Fortunately I was able to get switched to lower rates and then she flew very nice.  No real speed runs on the maiden.  But I flew her again later that day (unfortunately without video) and she really hauls.

LOOKS GREAT  FLYS FAST and love the look with the gears up!

Questions

What did you use for high and low rates and did you drop them for the 2nd flight!   Pretty crazy on high rates in the vid!!

Did you measure how much power you used? and how much time did you get on the 2nd flight?

Landing gears seem to held up well, any issue upon inspection?

Congrats on ag GREAT maiden flight!!!!

I want to fly!!!!!!!

JW, great video! I am ready to fly also, as soon as a reasonable day presents itself here in Oregon. I would ask the same questions as Bob as to throws and battery useage. Were you using any expo on high rates? Very cool, thanks for posting.

I took the plane to southern Utah for a fly-in and forgot the manual, so had to guess on the throws.  I ended up with a bit over 1/2" either direction on low rates and almost an inch on high on the ailerons.  Then to compound things I unintentionally took off on high rates.  The other controls all seemed to work fine.  I decreased the low rates to about 3/8" and highs to just over 1/2"  I had about 25% expo on both high and low rates.

I used about 1400 mAh on the first flight.  (out of 4000)  The entire fiight is on the video so you can tell how long it was.  On my second flight of about 6 min I used 2300.

CG was at the recommended 70mm back from the leading edge at the wing tips.  It did not act tail heavy at all.  I'll do some inverted testing next time I fly to see how that works out.

Jeff

Now to make some adjustments

I'll measure them when I get home tonight and give you an exact number on the throws the way they are now.  She did fly much better on the second flight.

My Aileron throw is set up at 12mm now.  That still gives a very fast roll rate.  It is the recommended Aileron throw, but I would suggest dropping to 10 or putting in more expo if you are a bit less sure of yourself on the first couple of flights.  My high rate that I took off on measured at 18mm - which is too much in my opinion.  (Manual recommends 15 as high rate)

I didn't measure the speed, but it was plenty fast.  I'll try to get it measured and post it, but it won't be for at least a few weeks, depending on weather.  Our field up here is a sod farm. (We mostly fly off the bare smooth ground where they have cut sod).  It's still plenty muddy right now.
