Hi All,

I just finished building a Great Planes 1/3 scale ARF with an
OS 300 Super Gemini Twin for a friend. This engine is recommended by Great Planes for this aircraft, but there are no instructions as to how to install it, etc. A call to Great Planes for info was of no help. They would not even tell us how it flew, etc.
A message was sent to OS looking for an available muffler for the engine...none available.
So, of to work I went and modified the firwall to accept the engine, mounted the throttle servo to the firewall, installed the 7 digital servos for the control surfaces, matchbox for the 4 aileron servos, , battery backup system, onboard glow driver and a special decal set for the Pitts. Now I needed a muffler.
I contacted Slimline here in the Phoenix area and took the Pitts to them. They had made a Pitts muffler in the past for the OS 300 twin, but didn't know if it would work with the Great Planes Pitts. After some measurements and leaving the fuse with them for a couple of days, they modified their original design to fit the fuse.
When I started the engine with the Slimline Pitts muffler, you could not believe the sound! It was great!!! The exhuast stacks come out of the cowl at the scale location and it purrs at idle. At higher power settings, it sounds very scale like. Also, it is a very smooth running engine.
One of the things that we did not want to do with this airplane was to cut up the cowl for the engine. With the OS 300 twin, all of the engine fits inside of the cowl and the only holes that were put in it were the holes that were drilled for the mounting screws.
The Pitts was test flown on7/27 and flew like a dream. At 1/2 throttle, it will do anything that the full size will do and it sounds great.
If anyone would like photos or info on how to build a Great Planes pitts with the OS 300 Super Gemini twin, just drop me a line

Very nice work. Congratulations! I am on my second model after a stupid error that cost me my first Pitts and most likely the engine. Still waiting on the engine verdict, but not sounding good. I liked the airplane so much that I purchased another kit that I will assemble this fall. Just had to have another one. It sure is a crowd pleaser. Have fun!

I am also building the GP Pitts with the OS 300. I'm still making final decisions on some parts of the equipment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I was considering S9001 servos on a 6 volt dual battery system, to provide additional torque. Also, did Slimline keep any record of the alterations on the muffler for this application. I will need a muffler, for smoke system. Thanks

Bodiddley62,

Slimline can make the Pitts muffler with smoke for your OS 300/GP Pitts. It is not in their catalog, but they do have all of the measurements/dimentions/drawings made to make one that will fit properly. You might want to use an onboard glow driver and a battery backup system. The onboard glow driver cuts down on the holes needed in the cowl and the battery backup system gives you additional insurance and peace of mind.

I would really like to build a GP Pitts with the OS 300 combo and was just wondering if there is an onboard starter system for this engine?
Also what about engine cooling for the rear cylinder heads and airflow in and out of cowl, is there any signs of overheating, eg. power loss?

Cheers-

ozcan,

I do not know of an onboard starter for the OS 300, but there may be one available somewhere. As far as the engine overheating, it has not happened with this one.

Smooth Landings...

There is another option for an exhaust. Do a search for Keleo. He makes exhaust rings for radials and makes a muffler for this engine.
Go to Hobby Lobby's website for an onboard starter. They make one, but it isn't cheap!!!

Jake, I remember when you first posted the photos on this beauty. Again, very nice work. I sure like mine. Have over 90 flights on it now. Still holding together and flying well. Recently heard about the Cabbanes snapping, again, on the CE. Man that bothers me, but no problems on mine so far. Just something to watch.

Jeff, thanks for the starter info the FEMA unit looks very interesting, I will make further inquiries as to its track record http://www.hobby-lobby.com/fema.htm

Also, who makes the 1/3 scale decal sets (Charlie Hillard) for the Pitts???

pro mark makes a set of transfers. They are pretty pricey, but they are the best.

I hope you realize that this thread is 8 years old. Given that you might want to PM the member directly with your question. Just a thought.
