earlier 109's = bf later 109's = Me, i think anyway. i would love to see a 109z be done (a dream model for me), but the pcm would do for me.
Feel free to list every manufacture that makes kits or produces planes.

I gotta add my two cents.

From Warplanes of the Third Reich by William Green, considered by many to be the authoratative work on German warplanes, the designation "BF" comes from the name of the company that manufactured the plane, Bayerische Flugzeugwerke A.G. Technically, all planes manufactured by this factory would have had a "BF" designation. So techically, they are all "BF" 109's. However, almost immediately after the BF-109 was put into production, the designation for aircraft designed by Willi Messerchmitt was changed to ME. So the ME-110, ME-163, ME-209, etc etc. There never really was a Messerchmitt aircraft factory, it was always BF that produced his designs.

The Focke-Wolf aircraft company is another example, the development of the FW-190 is the TA-152. Made by F-W but designated for it's designer, Kurt Tank.

Sorry, could not stay out of this one...As the story goes, in 1934 the German air ministry asked Willy Messerschmitt and his team to build a bomber, when Messerschmitt had already designed the 108 Taifun and was planning on an evolution this design to make the 109.
When the bomber was unvailed and tested, it was faster than any fighter that germany had in its arsenal. This did enrage Erhard Milch ans some other Nazi officials, and it was decided that the ME 109 would be named BF 109. It is amazing to note that similar faith happened to Kurt Tanhke and the early FW 190 design...no DB 601 engine was available for this machine and he had to use a BMW radial engine instead! Actualy, the Nazi apparatus did not want the FW 190!! And what to say about the Me 262 that was comissioned as a bomber!
Anyway, the 109 was build in Bavaria, and also from parts build all over Germany, build by prisoners and german people. Quality did go down and problems did occur, the design was outdated, but kept goimg
This is the information I had about this bf vs me story....lots of BS from the NSDAP

dr_wogz -> RE: Bf-109??? (5/20/2004 11:59 PM)

The way I understood it (And I guess will stick to it..) is that the planes were originally labeled with their location of manufacturer, hence the BF designation. later it was desided to change teh letters to represent teh designer, not the location, hence why it was changed to ME..

Either way, I still call it / them BF/ME 109 (variant)

fly109 -> RE: Bf-109??? (5/21/2004 12:41 AM)

I see this thread is active again - cool.

Actually the designation ??109 did not change from the BF (Bayerische Flugzeugwerke) to ME to simply match the designers name. It was changed because the factory, Bayerische Flugzeugwerke was redeginated to Messerschmitt Flugzeugwerke in 1938! There was no "BF" factory in exsistance after that date, it did not exsist. Like if you sell your house and someone else moves in, your old neighbors probably won't refer to that house as the (your last name here) house. They will call it by the name of the new owners. Unless someone has a gun to there head OR they just like you better[;)]

In other words the redesignation was not only an effort give Wille his "props" rather, it was a simple coming to terms with reality. By 1944, Messerscmitts (109, 210 410, 262 and others) and components for them were being made in more locations than any official source is sure there actually was. And until the last weeks of the war, work was still going on in Messerschmit AG -the factory.

To "B" or not to "B"? As long as it is a 109 it will do just fine.

lownloud -> RE: Bf-109??? (5/21/2004 3:56 AM)

fly109, I gotta ask, do you have any in flight shots of your birds? My heart sinks everytime I see those planes. I would own one but my wife would pack her $hit up if I did... I push it with that poor girl as it is.[:D]

fly109 -> RE: Bf-109??? (5/21/2004 4:25 AM)

Lownloud,

I have some but they are not of the best quality. Here are a few shots of my most recent 109, "Rita". This is a G -10AS.
(Notice I used no prefix)[:D]

fly109 -> RE: Bf-109??? (5/21/2004 4:28 AM)

And another> Rita in the upper portion of a loop.

lownloud -> RE: Bf-109??? (5/21/2004 4:54 AM)

couchflyer -> RE: Bf-109??? (5/21/2004 8:55 PM)

fly109,

Do you have any close up shots of the flaps on the Platt 109?

Thanks

SBR_RV -> RE: Bf-109??? (5/22/2004 8:16 AM)

thats a nice 109, fly 109.

ramcfarland -> RE: Bf-109??? (5/22/2004 8:43 AM)

Willey Messershmitt had a falling out with Hitler's Nazi party,(or the other way around) and from that time the '"can do" fighter became officially designated as the 'BF'- 109[8D]
