I gotta add my two cents. From Warplanes of the Third Reich by William Green, considered by many to be the authoratative work on German warplanes, the designation "BF" comes from the name of the company that manufactured the plane, Bayerische Flugzeugwerke A.G. Technically, all planes manufactured by this factory would have had a "BF" designation. So techically, they are all "BF" 109's. However, almost immediately after the BF-109 was put into production, the designation for aircraft designed by Willi Messerchmitt was changed to ME. So the ME-110, ME-163, ME-209, etc etc. There never really was a Messerchmitt aircraft factory, it was always BF that produced his designs. The Focke-Wolf aircraft company is another example, the development of the FW-190 is the TA-152. Made by F-W but designated for it's designer, Kurt Tank. Andy
