Well I've been busy setting everything up inside the past few days. Still have a few items to get done but here's what I did. Mounted the radio box on aluminum rails, finished mounting all the hardware on the back of the boat, set up the servos and battery, mounted the engine, T-bar, driveshaft tube and driveshaft. Also mounted the hatch locks. Getting closer to being able to fire it up, then take it all apart for paint.
AB, I will keep that header cooler in mind if needed, it has a cooler that came with the engine.

Thanks, I trailer my boat up to NY state every summer to lake George for 2 weeks to run around on the lake and enjoy the adirondacks. I need a winter trip to enjoy the snow too. It was in the 80's here yesterday, today is cooler and windy.

Hey Mike! The boat build looks GREAT!!! LOVE the idea on the nitro with the inboard pipe. almost looks like a "DeepVee" pipe setup on the gas stuff!!! VERY cool idea!!!

I think I popped an email back with details on the CG for the two that I have. It was stated above as well. 28-33% dependant on the hp of the motor choice on the monos. My KAAMA is around that 31-32% and seems to be spot on.

If I may make a suggestion prior to painting: run it as you have it setup in primer and double check the function of everything. Yes, there is a little extra cleanup required for final paint prep but you will have the boat de-rigged for painting anyways. That way, if something is amiss, it can be done without having to sand off paint and graphics. One of the tricks us boat geeks use on the crazy single and twin gas builds for the bigger projects.

I say that because with a 6hp plus OPS 90 you may have some things to do if the boat chine walks the first few times out with the chines running all the way aft on the outers...

These extrememly high lift hulls tend to chine walk and behave funny with the huge power we now have available like the Rossi/OPS 90 nitros and the 5-7hp gas motors...MUCH more than originally intended for the hull.

If you pop on youtube and search FlogginHarvey there are a couple of videos of the KAAMA Scarab and the Miami Vice Scarab posted...if you want to see the boat performing. Please keep in mind on the KAAMA I blueprinted the hull based on Tony Castronovo's article from RCCA/RCBM from YEARS ago. AND I also took some chine off the running surface. The combination of those two things REALLY made a wonderfully positive impact on running attitute/characteristics at speeds over 40MPH. The KAAMA boat is now solid as a rock even while running with other 45-60" hulls on the water.

If I tuned on the KAAMA to optimize the prop and drive trim I would need to play around with setup and am fairly confident it could easily reach speeds in excess of 50MPH. But, because it was always intended just to be a play boat for my wife the 46-47MPH speeds with a little wet/sticky running attitute were more than acceptable.

I would bet that this boat with an OPS 90 will REALLY fly!!!

Nice work and congrats on a wonderful project!!! IT has been fun follwoing your thread and I very much look forward to seeing some running footage later in the Spring!!!

Side note, the next time you are in Lake George please tell George at Boats By George hello from Trey Price!!! He is the Cobalt Boats dealer up that way and we work together on occassion through the Cobalt Dealer network and my marketing work with Cobalt Boats! He has invited me to the area a ton and I can never break away from boat sales here at the Lake of the Ozarks when the water is still soft in the Northeast!!!

Trey thanks for all the good info on the set up, I'll run the boat in primer next week to see how she handles. I didn't want to have to seal around the hardware bolts over the primer but it's probably worth it to get the bugs worked out before paint. I run my Talon up at Lake George, see pic. from last summer, one of the nicest places to be on the water.

I ran the engine last night with water running through it and realized that I needed to replace all the o rings in the cooling head and around the head bolts. Once that was done I ran it again today and it worked perfect. I did notice at a certain rpm that the flex shaft seemed to wobble and make a bunch of noise and friction. I used a 3/8" steel brake line for the shaft tube and now wondering if I should change it to something with a tighter tolerance aroung the flex shaft. What is normally used for these 1/4" drives? Should I use a teflon liner or a 5/16 brass tube?

I never had much luck with the Teflon in high RMP glows as it simply melted which gummed things up real good as result of extreme friction. The 5/16 brass tube with lots of white lithium grease was my solution and never looked back worked great.

thanks, I decided to make a new shaft and was able to slip a 5/16 brass tube inside the steel brake line, it fit nice and snug. It's epoxied in the boat and ready to go, the flex shaft fits much better with minimal slop.

Nice ,give yourself a little more room in between your strut and Dogdrive. That flex cable will shrink up under load. 1/4" is fine . I don't use teflon washers . just me. Looks good to go. The smell of nitro.

I went to the lake today to run the ops 90 and couldn't get it to stay running. it would go about 50 feet and shut down. I tried richer & leaner settings and different glow plugs but couldn't get it. This was given to me so I don't know where to set the needle or what the recommended glow plug is, anyone have info on this?

I don't know needle settings or plug, but what prop were you running? Maybe try a smaller one.

I don't think it's the prop, I can hold the boat with the prop just touching the water and it will rev then shut off. maybe a fuel pressure issue. I'll have to check on sunday heading out till then.

Loose that inline filter simply install that on your pump fill line and you won't need it on the carb line. It could just be another place to suck unwanted air into the system. I have been both RC boating and flying costly glow engines for years and never use an inline carb filter ever. Clean fuel is no doubt a must so I put 2 filters on my pump fill line and blow them out often. If the fuel going into the tank is clean then the fuel the engine drinks will be as well. I have an older OPS 65 among other glows and my experience with needle valve settings is normally 3 turns out then start the engine and adjust in for a leaner or out for richer run slight adjustment is that’s necessary. For the best transition from idle to full throttle once you have a nice balance between lean/rich high end try this method. Start engine locate low idol set needle as engine idols pinch or remove fuel line to carb. As the engine begins to die from fuel starvation (at idol) listen for a RPM increase (about 300-600rpms) moments before it dies. Using this line pinch method adjust the low end needle until you hear the RMS wrap up as previously described. Any hobby tachometer can also help with this task but you should be able to easily hear it. Once the low and high end is set your engine will be well tuned and run great with smooth transitions throughout its power curve.

I took the carb apart today and realized that the tube that the needle seats in was facing 180 degrees the wrong way. When I went to full throttle it actually shut the fuel off to the engine. which makes sense because it would go from reving to just shut right off. I corrected it and will try it tomorrow. I had the same problem on a used outboard I bought, switched it around and it worked perfect. Thanks for everyone's input and suggestions.

Here's a couple videos of the first run, carb is working correctly now. This is with no set up tuning, running rich with a rough primer finish on the hull. It started to rain so I will go back with some tweeking and see how it does. I'm using an X470 prop but I think I can go with a bigger pitch. The hull was running very wet but it handled excellent and could turn at speed no problem. Once I get it set up I will try the original OPS pipe as well.
