How hard was the engine to pull after heating?  It should still have some resistance...  but be real hard to pull when cold.

hey nitrosportsandrunner i have an question, now in the manual for the traxxas tmaxx i order about the breaking in process it says to only break in the engines at an temp of 45 degrees or higher outside, that if u try it any colder that it could damage the engine or weaken it, question is could that have been my prob wit getting the volcano to start and stay running? atm the weather here in ohio has been like anywhere on average 35-40 past week and gonna be about the same this coming week from what the weather is stating. i think next week i saw one or 3 days that it's gonna be 45 or above, that would be prob only day i could break in an nitro i could see according to the tmaxx manual.

The engine really needs to get close to 200 for a proper break in...  in the winter that's hard to do.

If you had it sputtering the other day, you are pretty close.
Sounds to me like it needs the idle bumped opened a bit.

These little motors can be tempermental at best sometimes. Wait for a warmer day, and give it another go.

it is possible that breaking in the motor in the cold could have damaged something in the volcano.

wait till its warmer to breakin your tmaxx.
and give the volcano one more shot on a warmer day to try and start. even tho you did try the hair dryer, the air going into the motor was still very cold. if it sputtered last time you tried, then it should still be able to run. just gotta wait for warmer weather and try some different carb settings.

whatever your tmaxx manual says, do that exactly! you cant go wrong following the manual. and a proper break-in of the motor is the 1 key step that will insure that you get a good, easy to tune motor! do it wrong, and the motor will never want to run good.

i personally have never ran a nitro in the winter. but it is more work to tune, and keep the motor at proper temps when its soo cold out.

I would richen the hsn. I followed exactly what the manual said and it wouldnt start. I went to 5 turns out and got it to start but not run without the igniter on. I then turned the lsn to 2 3/4 and that made all the difference. Last week I broke it in and have run 1 quart of fuel through so far. The manual says after each tank lean the hsn 1/2 turn and after the fifth tank tune for performance. If I lean the hsn 2 turns my engine wont even move without spitting and sputtering and starting is not easy. Every engine is different  there is nothing wrong with the engine.  Like nitrosportsandrunner says you just have to find the right settings. If you get enough fuel it will start. To much fuel will flood it but I have yet to flood mine. I even hold my finger on the muffler until it fires then I remove my finger and next pull its running. I only have to do this when the engine is cold.  When the engine warms up it starts first pull. I do the same thing on my Traxxas Stampede. I have not read this any where but it works for me. Give it a try, be patient and get a roto start if pulling gets to painfull.

hi again everyone, today i will be recieving the traxxas tmaxx 3.3 i purchased, i am waiting untill the weather warms up before i can break in the traxxas and volcano, which looks like not gonna be untill like first of next month for the weather here in southern ohio. but its alright i can wait. but i do have an question about the traxxas t-maxx 3.3, from the specs the maxxs top speed is like 45mph and the volcanos is like 60, is there anything upgrades i can get for the taxxas tmaxx to improve its speed. reason i ask is cause this coming spring me and my wife may race each other out back in our yard. And the way it stands wit the volcano cause of its faster top speed she would beat the heck outta me for sure. i would atleast like to make it even and have an chance.

i hate to burst your bubble, but the volcano cannot do 60mph.
if thats what is said on the ad from which you bought it, thats just a bad seller trying to sell more.
the volcano is good for 30-40 MPH. it would have to have a much larger motor to do 60mph.

its one of the downsides to how redcat does biz. all the selling is done by resellers. they are supposed to use the facts/pics/specs redcat provides.
on the s30 line, redcat does not state a top speed. so, some greedy resellers just put that crazy high top speed so they can sell more. but its BS.

the 2 should be fairly close in a race. assuming both have a good tune, the tmaxx will be faster on the top end. but both will take off pretty evenly. the volcano has a smaller motor, but its much lighter as well.
basically, they will both take off and be very even, untill the tmaxx hits second gear and pulls away.

also, the volcano wont hit top speed unless is on a smooth surface. the tmaxx with more ground clearance can go faster on rough terrain.

well then from what u said the tmaxx would do great in our back yard considering that the yard is so rough its like an washboard, with bumps and potholes everywhere. i would say the volcano might just bottom out on an bump. i think i might have to just try this spring to acutally till up some room to smooth out and make an track with an few dips and jumps since our back yard was an hayfield, it should be easy enough to make an good track, might take an while but it would be worth it.

afraid not.

i use pencil and paper...lol.

i know some good basic rules tho.
for a 1/10 scale, its ideal to have 8 foot wide lanes.(u will be surprised how hard it is to drive a tmaxx in a 6 foot wide track!)
i remember reading in a RC mag that a good size overall for a 1/10 track is 60x100. bigger is better, but if you can at least make it that big you will have plenty of room for some turns, jumps and a good straight stretch.

also, consider drainage. jumps can be made of dirt, or out of wood. wooden ones can be moved around to different spots, thus changing your track.

im gonna right my local rec center to see if they can build a track this spring. they have some unused land. i would build a track of my own, but i dont have any land to do it.

the volcano can do some off-roading. it just doesnt have the same clearance the tmaxx does.

well i have plenty of yard so to speak, see we live at the beganing of an old hayfield in an trailer, so we have plenty of land behind our place like 8 acres. so i am pretty sure we have plenty of space to make an track.

cool. if you have plenty of land, do a 100x100 foot track with 10 foot wide lanes. that will be plenty big for a tmaxx or anything other than a 1/5 gasser.
man i wish i owned land and could build my own track

a google image search for RC track will help give you some good ideas!

#1) You should use a fuel filter for both. All it takes is a couple grains of sand to get into that engine and you're out $200 or $60, respectively. And off road cars tend to get filthy dirty with sand and grime coating the fuel tank. The only time its safe not to use a filter is in an onroad.

#2) Top fuel brand is Traxxas's brand of fuel.... They're just trying to make more money. Any good 20% nitro fuel will do. Top fuel, blue thunder, HPI's stuff, stick to the brands.

#3) I don't have a volcano (I have a Savage) but if it was possible to get any more clearance they would have done it stock. Maybe this might work though.... Take off the shocks and see if the A-Arms allow any more room to go down, and then use the alternate bottom mounting holes (they're in my Tornado, same car) to bolt the shox back on.

If I were you, I would put onroad tires on the Volcano and use it like that. It's not that durable. Neither is the T-Maxx, but it is a huge step up. (Then again, I'm comparing the Maxx to my Savage)

so then it won;t hurt for me to use the towerhobbies brand fuel? i will take the shocks off the volcano and see what i can do wit it. as me and my wife firgured out seems like the volcano is poorly made when compared to the traxxas t-maxx. i bet in an race hands down the tmaxx would blow the volcano away in speed and durablity.

As long as it is 20% nitro car fuel then you should be fine....
You're right..... The Volcano really doesn't HAVE a design. To get at any of the internals you need to unscrew the entire thing. I wasn't kidding about the onroad part.
The T-Maxx would beat the Volcano in both, but the Savage would whup either

Hey thunder5005, here is a link to the fuel I use and the prices here include shipping to your front door,  you can buy it by the gallon or by the case which is 4 gallons, the case is the best deal if you can spend that much and need that much....dont waste your money on all the $15 - $20 + shipping per quart stuff out there it isnt any better......get you some of this Maxy's fuel, learn the tuning of your Nitro's through patience and consistency with all the good help you have gotten here so far and then just get out and have some fun.
I am new also to these Nitro engines but I have years of experience with 2 strokes and just about every 4 stroke engine design that is common, this is my advantage on the tuning part but I have learned loads of good things from the fellas here who have been tinkering with these RC vehicles for a while and I have more to learn as I go.

As for the Volcano I say just get out and run the dog out of it when you get it going, parts are cheap and easy to get and I'll bet you will have loads of fun with it as well, it all depends on how rough a person is on something, the people who are out jumping their trucks 6 feet in the air are gonne bust things up pretty quick but just running around a track with some small humps and bumps wont mess things up real bad or quick for even the cheaper ones from what I see, for the priceI think the Redcats are the best bang for the buck and a good way for anyone to get started in the RC Hobby without spending a small fortune, it's better to spend $185 and decide you dont like the RC Nitro thing than it is to spend $600 and figure out it not for you.

http://www.maxysfuel.com/store/#ecwid:category=191906&mode=category&offset=0&sort=normal per gallon link.

http://www.maxysfuel.com/store/#ecwid:category=191905&mode=category&offset=0&sort=normal per case link.

Here is another link to what I have heard to be very good fuel and it is a good delivered price as well.... a little cheaper than the Maxy's

Yeah a LHS is the best bet but if he is like me and doesnt have a LHS online is the only option and $34 for Torco 20% or  $37 for Maxy's 20%  Shipped is a good deal from what I have seen around, if you deduct the $10-$12 for shipping off these fuels you would be getting them for about $22 - $24 a gallon.

Just trying to help the fella out with a decent online fuel purchase place.

There are several differnt places to get good deals on replacement parts so It's hard to narow one place down as " the place "

One place that I know from experience has great customer service and is a very quick shipper is www.rufaster.com they have everything under the sun for the Volcano, Stock parts & Good Upgrades @ great prices, there are others on here who can give great service and great prices on the same parts from what I have seen, but I can only tell you for sure what I have experienced first hand, and Mike at rufaster.com has taken very good care of me when I've bought stuff from him for my Backdraft 3.5.

I say get an extra spur gear, a couple extra glow plugs, get you some 2500 - 2900mah Nimh Batteries for truck and radio, a good Nimh charger off ebay for$15 http://cgi.ebay.com/T868-Ni-MH-Ni-Cd-AA-AAA-Rechargeable-Battery-Charger-/390215386255?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5adaa6448f, get you a Ofna Glow igniter off of Ebay that uses standard D cell battery for about $7+shipping,  http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250733435770&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT get some good air filter oil designed for FOAM FILTERS http://www.rcspeedmarthobbies.com/Kal-Guard-FOAM-FILTER-OIL_p_131.html this stuff is great and will last a long time, Go to http://www.amainhobbies.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=diff+oil&x=8&y=6 and get you some diff oil and before you run that Volcano remove the diifs one at a time and add some 5000 - 7000wt silicone diff oil to the diffs and put some good grease on the ring & pinion gears, I use the Team Associated Silicone Differential Fluid @ $3.69 a bottle, I recommend using high pressure air and WD-40 and/or Electric Contact Cleaner for cleaning after a day out in the yard, I also use marvel Mystery Oil as my after run oil, just make sure you clean ALL......! of the dirt and grime from around the glow plug before you take it out or you will end up with dirt on top of the piston in your engine, this is a disaster and will wreck your motor fast......!

Loctite ( BLUE ) engine mount screws for sure and check all other screws for tightness, but remember most of the screws on these vehicles go into PLASTIC so get them snug but take caution not to tighten too much or you will strip them pretty easy.

Go to youtube and search the Redcat Volcano S30 " WIDEO's" as alishanmao says......! and you will find  alot of info. on all the Redcat vehicles and most of the info. you will see can be apllied to all of them when it comes to mait., tuning & repair

I dont have a Tmaxx so someone else will have to point you in that direction for the best source for parts.

I know I said a lot here and you may already know 99% of what I covered but just take what ever applies and I wish you the best in getting your truck up and running and I hope that weather straightens up for ya soon, I got family in Ohio on my wifes side and in Kentucky as well and yes it has been pretty cold there, heck here in Central Texas where I live it was 12 degrees out yesterday morning and 18 this morning, it got up to about 50 after noon yesterday and I was out burning Nitro in my backdraft for a couple hours and it ran like a champ......on my 20% Maxy's

Peace, Happy Rc-in
