Originally posted by scottrc When you arrive at the field, unpack your plane, and everyone else lands and hides under the tables.
I've got a diamond dust that's pretty fast. Had it at the field one day last year, and everyone else had seen it fly, but one of the "electric only" guys pulled in. He was "self taught," on electrics, and had a whole boatload of park and indoor fliers. Joining the club exposed him to the sport and scale "wet" planes flying around, but he'd never seen a really fast plane. The DD "looked cool" to him and I promised it'd fly again before the day was over. We both then went about our business and the day went on. Eventually there was a break where no one was flying so not thinking anything of it, I went out, started it up, took off, and did a warm up lap. The electric guy was on the infield, approx. 30 ft behind me, and apparently the warm up lap got his full attention. Even at 1/2 throttle, it's loud and fast. So I decide after a lap or two, it's time to show her stuff, and climb up several hundred feet over the runway and out past it a ways, then roll her over, point her straight down and go full throttle. She now is honkin, and getting faster by the second. Pull out was perfect, 10 ft off the deck, straight in line and just slightly to the inside of the runway centerline, and she is moooving. She goes by in a screaming blur of noise and speed, so close the hair on the back of your neck raises and your eyeballs can't completely stay focused on it. Talk about a rush! Yehaw!!! I am in the ZONE! Unfortunately I'm quickly snapped out of it. I hear someone yelling at me from behind. It's the electric guy. He's hollering at me "WAIT, WAIT!!! LET ME GET IN MY CAR FIRST!!! WAAIITT!! WAAAIIITTT!!!" I throttled back a bit, and kept her out further the rest of the flight. After landing I find he actually ran to his car, rolled up the windows and sat there the whole flight, his eyes glued to what he called the "death machine". Scared the bezejesus outta him. That was over a year ago. The guy still gets nervous around that plane, but he's now converted, and flies mostly glow planes, usually at full throttle That flight wasn't the sole thing that converted him, but it sure had his eyes wide open!
