O.K. got my spinner done...

It wasn't as hard as I thought...

I first drilled out the rivets hold the mounting pylon in place and discarded the whole thing.

I then used my prop dril jig to drill the 6 bolt holes my ZDZ requires.

I measured the prop and made a template out of cardboard making sure I had about 3/32" of room.

Then I used a dremel with a cutoff wheel to cut the longer straight lines then a sanding drum to grind and round the corners.

Lastly I picked up a 3" 10/32 socket head bolt (not easy to find BTW) that fit the tapped shaft of the ZDZ. I had to reduce the head size slightly so it would fit down in the spinner bolt recess. I did this on a belt sander.

I still have to balance it, but it's a nice fit and looks faily "factory"...

I do, and I highly recommend one.

In fact I just got back from my LHS and picked up an MPI Miracle switch... Basically a $15 switch w/ charge receptacle and a $20 6 volt regulator wired together for $35... with one important difference... if the switch itself fails or the wires leading to it, the regulator failsafes to ON....

I've talked to quite a few large scalers and manufacturers and they convinced me that perhaps the most common hardware failure is the switch... think about it... a cheap .39 cent item internally, with little copper contacts sliding over a PCB edge... making contact by friction alone.... pounded by constant vibration...

A fresh 6 volt pack is well over 7 volts... Since servos are rated for 5-6volts a regulator will keep them running at best performance without over juicing them. Above 6 volt they are running at an inefficient level of amp draw and wasting juice... plus receivers can have an issue of handling the higher amp draw caused by servos running with 7 volts...

Morbid, who is MPI and where would I find one of those miracle switches? I got a call regarding my rx and tx this morning. The tech said he couldn't find a thing wrong. He said he heated, chilled and vibrated the heck out of the receiver and not a problem at all. Now, I'm really at a loss and wondering if it wasn't a switch. That's why I'm asking.

any pictures of the fuel and smoke tanks installed over the wing tubes? I heard this set up works great , the planes flight characteristics stay about the same through out the entire flight because the tanks sit right on the cg
MPI makes all sorts of electrical supplies like h. duty extensions, switches, etc for all brands. aerotechhobbies.com is our LHS and they carry a full range of MPI products and everything else for that matter if you can't find locally. Their prices are very competitive. So much so that they can't post them or the big sources give them a hard time. Example, 5645s under 50 bucks.

    MPI is Maxx Products Inc.

    Online website is http://www.maxxprod.com

They sell a very high quality line of extensions, regualtors, batteries and so much more.

The link to the Miracle Switch is onthe left side bar about 2/3's down...

perhaps their only drawback is their website... not the most intuitive site I've seen....

    Scott,

How much run time do you get with the stock tank and ZDZ 40?

Are you flying it non 3D with smoke, or are you doing some hovering, harriers, 3D stuff too?

    Thanks,

    WOOD
I get a good 12-15 minutes. I average half throttle. I do slow flight stuff and some 2/3 throttle stuff like cuban-8s, loops 4-point rolls.

It will hover but at almost full throttle. I do some mild 3d with it (blenders, sloppy torque rolls, harriers.) Don't do much 3d with it as the CG is a bit forward. Also running a 20-10, a bigger, lower pitch prop may be better for 3D. At this setting it is a dream to fly. Tracks like on rails, no elevetor needed when inverted.

If you want to do serious 3D then get a ZDZ 50. Mine will torque roll but will not accelerate out of it with much authority. It was better with my loud B&B-style muffler. The Bisson cuts the power a bit, but it is nice and quiet (prop tends to be louder then engine.)

I hope this is not a stupid question, but if you use a 6 volt pack and then regulate it at 5.1 volts (the regulator that I just bought) isn't that the same voltage as a 4 cell pack. I don't understand how I will get more speed and torque if the voltage to the servo is the same. What am I missing?

I hope that the last post is not off topic I'm setting up my new GP Patty and just ordered a new 2700 5 cell pack and regulator.

Regulators also come in 6 volt versions... This takes the input voltage coming in and keeps it at 6 volt...

    Definitely not off topic...

You obviouly WANT the 6 volt output regualtor to get the faster speed/torque... call them back and make sure it's a 6 volt...

Similar switch to Mordib's that I used:
    http://www.cermark.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=C&Product_Code=217DSCFJSW

Smart-Fly voltage regulator, available in 5.5 or 6 volt and optional failsafe switch that I used:

    https://inachos.safe-order.net/smart-fly/page4.html

    Both available from:

    airwildpilotshop.com

great service and have them send you their catalog as they have a lot of good stuff for your Patty.

JD, we do think alike when it comes to setting these up.

    Welp...

Looks like me Patty maiden's today...

Made a final once over this morning, and now am gonna dial in the needles with the cowl on.

Then it's off to the field.

I weighed mine on a faily accurate shipping scale...

It is falling between an AUW of 16.25 and 16.5 lbs... I likey... I likey...

Balanced with placement of the 1700 Nimh receiver pack strapped to the former below and just in front of the wing.

Will let ya know how it went this evening...

He who builds, must fly... And fly you will!!!! Morbid, I guarantee you'll love it. Better flying than any Edge or Cap. Good luck and let us know how it went. I get excited when I hear about a maiden flight. Another proud Patty owner taking to the air.
