My name is Brahm Strydom, I would like to take this oppertunity to show you guys my Gee Bee R2 made from the Hostettler plan, i know its not a comparf but will be building one shortly.Scale is 33%, weight is 18 kg,powered by a dle 170 Made a mistake with the placement of some of the decals.Hannes, i like your fascination with the r2, you make the flights look easy!

Status: offline 		Hi Guys, will probably fliy the plane within the next week, a bit aprehensive for the first flight . Will try and post video if possible. Plane should probably handle well, the wing is about twice the thickness of the comparf version. Not alot of guys here in S.A that flies Gee Bees, hopefully everything works out well. Could not find anybody on the hostettler forum that flew their Gee Bee's, except one guy that did one flight, reportedly the plane kept falling into a knife edge position and he struggled to make turns.

Not alot of guys flying Gee Bee's here by us, or anywhere else it seems for that matter! You two guys are probably the only ones flying Gee Bee's of this scale.There was one guy on the hostettler forum that flew his once, apparently the aircraft kept falling into a knife edge, and he had trouble flying the plane, but i have not seen another forum entry from him.Hopefully this one behaves better. Will probably fly it within the next two weeks, busy making sure the c/g is 100% correct!

Your Gee Bee looks wery good and good luck on your maiden:-)

I have the airworld Gee bee R3.And this one have the same problem always want to go into knife edge,to be honest it fly better KE then normal.I put in the igyro from powerbox and now it almost fly like a trainer:-) I am wery happy with this setup:-)

Salte, Brahm,

Any idea which wing dropped into knife edge on those Hostetler builds?.  If both planes dropped the same wing it might provide a clue as to why.

Wow, these "mufflers" are great and scale!!! No noise restrictions at your airfield... ?

But don´t you worry about the exhaust gas temperatures destroying/deforming your cowl and fuse?

Or do you add deflections?

I had a freind of mine fly my CARF, has a 3W140 in it, and he flew it once, and he was complaining about the right wing dropping, wanting to turn right, he wanted me to reduce some of the right thrust, which I never did yet.

Following this thread with interest to learn the very good skill and craftmanship of the R2 builders. Like Geir Salte, I have an Airworld Gee Bee R3 with tendency for the right wing to drop when flying right turns (clockwise). It otherwise flys very well and also flys very easy in knife edge.


I'm interested to learn if all Gee Bee's exhibit this tendency and what, if any fixes there may be. (Thrust adjustment ???) Otherwise, the gyro may be the cure.

In the book Gee Bee The Real Story of the Granville Brothers and their Marvelous Airplanes, the author, Henry A. Haffke, states on page 101 regarding the R1 (and R2 I presume as he claims that but for the engine & cowl they were both identical), "The tail surfaces were fabric covered as was a section of the rear of the fuselage."
Pictures in the Benjamin/Wolf book, Gee Bee, clearly shows the rudder covered in ply then fabric applied on top.
Can one of you gents tell me if the D. Benjamin R2 has any fabric-only covered tail feathers? They all sure look solid in your pictures Hannes.

Status: offline 		I noticed how every one use all these clamps when they mount the canopy parts, I would like to tell you the way I did it and it works great. first of all I cover the parts with masking tape so you don't get epoxy on them and than I take each part and match drill holes about 1/2 inch apart with each canopy part smaller than a 2/26 screw these are pilot holes, ((I use allen type servo screws to mount each part) I drill mounting holes all around the inside of the canopy, putting a screw in each hole as I drill them. Than remove all these mounting screws, than I take each screw and wax it good, than I put the required amount of epoxy and apply it on the canopy and the inside of the canopy frame and than I remount the canopy with these screw wait until the epoxy cures and than remove all these screws.

The horizontal stab, elevators, and rudder were ALL sheeted with PLYWOOD at the Wolf /Benjamin Gee Bee.

I am researching the R1 for a 33% scratch build and now have three sets of multi-view drawings w/ documentation stating that the rudder & elevators were fabric covered.
But, I suppose Delmar knows best. Pete Miller did write the forward to his book.

As Hannes said, the tail parts of the Gee Bee R1 and R2 were not open structures. No doubt the finished parts were covered with Dacron or silk and dope, or something equivalent, but the framed parts were in fact skinned with thin plywood exactly like the wing halves. The Gee Bee Model Z did have open framework with only a fabric 'skin' - this can be seen from the 'rib sag' between the ribs - but not the R1 and R2.
Here are pix of an exact R1 replica from the San Diego Air and Space Museum; this was constructed from the Granville Brothers plans. You can see the tail parts have NO "rib sag" -

The original Gee Bee R1 and R2 had (right) fin offset. The Benjamin/Wolf R2 replica duplicates this offset, as does the CARF Gee Bee. However, the CARF fin shape is not an accurate replication of Delmar Benjamin’s R2.
For better scale fidelity, I elected to re-shape the vertical fin to more closely replicate the Benjamin/Wolf R2 at Fantasy of Flight Museum.
When Lenzel Miller watched me flying, I had just roughly reproduced the fin.
I have since filled and primed the fin such that I think it is about ready to paint and will present much better in a 3 view.
Of course, this awesome airplane remains a work in progress!
