Greetings,

I've recently purchased a Vintage RC Sailboat. I didn't learn much about it from the previous owner, and I've been unable to find this boat in the internet/forums.
I'm guessing pre-1978 based on the electronics installed, but that's all I know.

If anybody could help me ID her, I'd sure be grateful.

Some Specs:
Fiberglass Hull/ Mahogany Plywood deck
Enclosed lead keel
All mast fittings are soldered/brazed (spreaders, mast step, etc..)
Stays appear to be stainless piano wire-like material
LOA: 60" (5ft)
Width: 14"
Height from keel to mast top: 7'-10"

This is my first real RC, I'm updating the electronics and hope to get out on the water soon

The hull looks a lot like the Santa Barbara but from what I've read the S/B is 70" long.

I'm measuring at ~60" length and 14" at 37 from the bow.
Do you know if there was some variation on LOA/beam?

well, that is NOT a Santa Barbara, BUT it is beautiful ! nice find !
if you need local help with the boat try and contact the club near you ,the
"Anacortes RC Sailors"
they have a website listed at ...
//sites/google.com/site/arcsailors
looks like they meet near you , and would probably provide help ,opinions
and such - I have not yet met a rc skipper that didn't want to see someone
else's boat -especially something "antiquey" !
I don't know if your hull was ever a "sanctioned" AMYA class boat - might even
be a one of a kind .

I was in the right place at the right time...I consider myself fortunate.
Got her on the scale this AM, she weighs in at just over 30 pounds.

I appreciate the tip on the club.

Status: offline 		I would venture to guess that you have one of the few Vortex 60's that were built back in the mid 1970's. The boat was unique in that it provided the option for rigging an overlapping genoa jib that didn't use a jib boom to hold the foot of the sail. I'd think there might be a label somewhere inside the hull.

I poked around and got a good look at the hull, unfortunately it's not quite the same shape.
Aft of the keel is curved on the vortex where mine is almost a vertical line.
Also the vortex hull fares into the upper portion of the rudder, mine rudder sticks out on its own.

But Man! the length, width, and weigth are about dead on!
I can see no markings anywhere on the boat.
 
Did some model builders of the 70's go to this great length to do one-off fiberglass hulls?

Status: offline 		I thought of the Vortex 60 too but you're right: this doesn't appear to be one.

The biggest giveaway for me is the shape of the keel and its extension back to the rudder... or the lack of that extension on your boat. I'm not sure what it is, but it's a real beauty! This is the profile of the V-60 (from the manufacturer's drawing) imposed on your boat for comparison.

Status: offline 		From the dimensions you posted, it is possible that your boat could be an A Class design. Your boat could be considered as a light weight A, with short waterline and large sail area designed for light air conditions in the NW. The A Class sesign envelope can range from a length of 60 inches to over 80 inches and 60 lb. displacemnts depending on the sailing conditions. Heavy air conditions would exist in England where the boats are large and heavy. In Australia, the boat could be around 72 inches but displace around 36 lbs.

Status: offline 		Anybody know whether any boats for A-Class (or other developmental or open classes about this size) were manufactured in any numbers? That hull looks like it came from a professional quality opertion.

A-Class is always fun to deal with anyway according to the ISAF, the displacement is to measured in cubic millimeters and I don't know how to convert to cubic millimeters from pounds

1 litre=1000 cubic centimetres
1 cc= 1 gram

If you want to be Really exact, then

1 kilogram = 2.204 622 621 8 pound

Status: offline 		It could be an R6M as well.  Some could measure as both an R6M and an A.
Also, 1000 cubic mm to 1 cc.

Status: offline 		About the only manufacturer is Sails Etc. of Great Britian. The boat is very pricey due to the use of carbon fibre. Most A Class boats are designed and built by the owner/skipper. USVMYG may have some plans. Bob Sterne had an Orcs III kit available but I believe he is no longer manufacturing hulls.
