Sam:
It looks like the AMA put a new coat on the runway?
And Painted it too!

True/False?

Did not make it this year but the yellow nosed Mustang is from my club.

Yep, they coated and painted the runway and resurfaced the roads leading to the flying area.

Giant scale flyin at FORKS club in Amanda, Ohio
June 25
100 miles.

Beside a nice of friendly people, they have a nice flying site that's 700' of all grass.
I was in the minority with my planes but it's always fun to fly at new fields and renew old acquaintances.

Almost 'bought the farm'..twice:
P-47: Checked all servos, started the plane, checked the max RPM's: all good.
Begin to taxi and the motor stays the same RPM's.
Some checking found the center pin on the extension wire to the throttle was burned.
Fortunately, it happened on the ground.

C-45:
The usual check of all servo movement.
Took off and very difficult making the backside turn (flying right to left).
Fortunately, a fellow pilot Greg was spotting for me, to remind me to use rudder.
Rudder saved the day.
After trying to land twice and being off center, I turned left (no problem with left turns) and landed down wind. Landed on the runway but went into the farmers field and broke one gear mount.
It could have been a lot worse as don't try flying a twin with only one aileron: I 'lucked out'.
After landing, the right aileron servo arm was off the servo.
The previous day, I replaced the aileron servos and assemblies as they had a lot of slop after over 200 flights.
Yesterday, my buddy, Joe, said to come over for steaks and I got 'side tracked' on completing the job.

Americana:
Took the back roads to the flyin to see some Americana.
There's some incredible houses, court houses and other structures in those small towns.
I think that I found the house used for the Munsters (pic 5: I think it was purple) and where can ya' find a bank building like that!

Steve,
I had planned to go there as I have, the last two years but I thought I'd try FORKS as I haven't been there in awhile.
They are a great club of friendly pilots.

Joe,
Thanks for the heads up, I didn't know they had posted anything. I don't want to hijack Sam's thread, but i had a great time. The awards were icing on the day.

C-45 repair.

The left main gear area was damaged.
One wood mount was broke in half and the gear broke through the side sheeting when the mount broke.
The other wood mount was fractured where the screws were so it was removed.
I find it easiest to remove end glued pieces of wood by just cutting them in the middle and using a drill bit to whittle away the glue joint at each end.
The old mount slots were enlarged and two new, thicker mounts were dry fitted into the two formers.
The wood mounts were then drill for some #6 screws to secure the main gear mechanism.
I always glue the wood mounts in with the gear attached: in this case, I had to first slide the two wood mounts into position, screw on the gear and then epoxy the mounts.
Since I enlarge the former holes that hold the wood mounts, I cut some extra ply to sister them to around the mounts on each former. I had to remove the engine to get access to the other side of one former.
Then the gear was removed and some additional re-enforcement was done.

I collected all scrap balsa at the time of the 'mishap' so I could just epoxy the sheeting back together that was damaged by the gear.
The ply saddle was slightly damaged but a piece of new ply was sistered over the damaged area.

This was a pretty easy fix.

The gear mechanism was checked over and what I, initially, thought was slop from wear, was just some loose screws. There was some small binding where the air cylinder just touched the gear frame but that was easily remedied with a dremel tool.

While everything is apart, I'm replacing all the old extension wires as they are a good 13 years old, plus air lines and some new kill switches and wiring.

C-45 repair (cont)

New Y extensions were made for the ailerons and flaps using 20 gauge wire.
The four extensions leading from the receiver to the center wing were also re-done.
New air lines were also installed.
I find that I rarely have any problems with airlines if the end of the line is pushed all the way to the center square on the T connections: not 'almost' but the edge fulling seated against the center.
Sometimes, I have to use a heat gun to get that last final alignment.
Some BVM oil is put in the lines just before attaching them to the air cylinders.
After putting some easysand over the damaged nacelle, I just used a brush to paint the area.
The wheels and doors have been put back on.
That tray in the center of the wing was for the old throttle servos when they were mounted, remotely: last spring, new servos were mounted on the fire wall.
New 'kill' switches and wire installed.

Got her all back together and tested the engines.
In a way, I'm glad the gear mount was damaged as the retracts needed work as well as new wires and air lines and the left gear no longer slants in: some good PM that could have saved a more disastrous result!
When the aileron servo screw came out, I'm thinking it may have vibrated out: I could never find that extra servo screw and, today, when adjusting the ailerons, I secured the servo arm screw while on the plane, but after removing the wing, I could further tighten the screw while the wing was on a secure flat surface.

Nice Save!

How long did it take to convince yourself it wasn't an engine problem?

Thanks, Mark.
I could hear the engines so I knew something else was wrong.

I've had two lucky saves in the last few weeks, counting the F6F Hellcat.

new toy!

Picked up a 1/3 BalsaUSA Nieuport 17 from my buddy.
107" ws, gt-80, paint ball gun (without paint balls), all hand painted emblems and nomenclature (that horse is a pretty impressive hand paint job!), hand carved pilot bust that is servo operated and the plane is weathered. Gary is an artist and does painting and carving.
I slaved the pilot bust to the rudder.

Nice to have one plane that doesn't have retracts!
Now I can fly with my WW I buddies plus get to go to three dawn patrol flyins.

Sam, don't you mean you have a second plane that doesn't have retracts; or did you get rid of your N28 you had?

At Joe Nall, the N-28 went off on it's own and crashed.
This is the second year in a row where my receiver got 'hit': I may not go back next year, getting too expensive!
I go to about seventeen flyins each year and my 'system' is 'rock solid' all year except at Joe Nall:
I think 1200 pilots at one place is just too many for any system.

virtual tour of Wright Pat air force museum:

Once you click on an area, click on the gray area and the 'map' will 'roll up'.
Putting the cursor on a plane will 'pop up' the name.

Starting to wonder about Joe Nall.

I know it's a lot bigger event, with more planes and discontiguous flight lines, but:

They have had SO MANY MORE radio glitch incidents than everybody else!

Is there some evil-doer out there intentionally creating problems?

Unlike with the old 72 MHz technology, I wouldn't even know how it could be done.

Sam: how are you managing the JR Radios switch from DSM-2 to DSM-X?

Which one was the N-28 flying with?

Mark,
The N28 had a power safe dsm receiver.
I was surprised it took a hit.
I have three new dsmx receivers and they have gone into the hellcat and n17, so far.
The new software handles both types of receivers.

=================
Celina Big Bird flyin.
July 9/10.
100 miles.

Another great 1000' grass field.
The field is located in the back of a county park.
You did have to not go past one end of the field, though, as there was a creek at the end of it (I think 3 planes found it!).
Excellent weather: hot but lite winds down the runway and blue sky, both days.
I got about 9 flights in: about 7 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday.
C-45 left engine sporadic on idle and the my first gear failure on the P-47 (both cut Sunday's flying down to two). Broke the prop on the P-47 belly landing.

Shaun and a friend of his had the jets:
F-86 is BVM's 80".
I don't remember the name of the white civilian jet but all three flew many times.
Shaun has a very impressive flying routine.

some Americana taking the back roads to Celina.

Amazing how much farm land is 'out there'!
A church with a huge steeple out in the middle of 'farm land'.
I think the following picture was a retirement home.
