Being a cheap SOB,
I fixed up one of my 'pop ups' that got damaged in a microburst storm at IWBC.
I had some 1/4" thick aluminum bar stock that I cut 3/4" wide by 6" long (with a hole drilled in the middle for the bolt) to fit inside the rectangular, hollow rods.
The bar stock was a snug fit so no additional means were needed to secure the bar stock inside the tubes. For sure, the tubes will not break at that location!

LMAC fall classic flyin at Lexington, Ky.
Sept 15-17.
115 miles.
I got there on Thursday and was glad that I brought my space heater for my trailer as it got down into the high 40's that night (labor day it was high 90's).
Always good to see old (and I do mean 'old'!) flying buddies.
Curtis, PJ, Gale, Sylvester and Buddy are the hosts of the flyin.
Quite a few of my buddies from Ohio showed up.
Doug's robart/ziroli P-47.
PJ's Byron hellcat and ziroli stuka.
They have a nice 750' paved (plus grass) runway.
Curtis's AT-6.
Joe, Doug and Gale talking 'shop'!.

Doug's cessna.
Gale's ziroli P-38.
Jeff and his buddy did a lot of jet flying, plus his turbo prop and jet chopper.
Curtis's yellow P-47.
I think there were only two WW I planes.
I think the elevator on this cub came off and he went in, hard.

RE: ROAD TRIPS 2011
Thanks Sam for coming to our event every year. Buckeyes make up the majority of our out of town pilots. As you know we have become great friends with you and the rest of the Ohio gang. We appreciate all you guys have done for our event over the years. Already looking forward to next year. Thanks!!!!

Rally of the eagles and monster planes flyin.
Mac Hodges field:
Oct 7-9
Franks field:
Oct 13-15
This trip will be my farthest trip (1000 miles, one way).
At least these are back to back so I get a break in driving to them.
Leaving early this Thursday and will be setting up with my buddy, Scott Prossen.
As with Owatonna and fond du lac, Scott and I are going to have a great time.

Hmmm...road trip!!!!!! lets see...
I left home today, Wed. Oct 5th, on my way to monsterplanes... 7 day trip...11,000 kms round trip
Sam, I talked to Scott yesterday and he mentioned you two were going to the Rally of the Eagles and then Monsters.
I think Scott has talked me into going to the Eagles next year, only a short detour as my route takes me through Atlanta on the way to Lakeland.
Looking forward to meeting you at M/Planes.
Cheers,
Dave.

Rally of the Eagles
Oct 7 - 9.
Miles: 650
The first leg of my last road trip.
Mac Hodges hobby shop and flying field is located about 2.5 hrs south of Atlanta.
Mac is one of the nicest people that you can meet.
My buddy, Scott, came up and we had a great time.
The field is a very large grass runway, as it can handle full size aircraft.
Dino was there and he maiden my comparf F4U (might as well have the best pilot, that I know of, do it!).
My buddies, PJ and Patrick, came up from Lexington, Ky and flew a Meister ME-109.
A 100" plane and it flew great with only a G-62, 'up front'.
http://www.meister-scale.com/
I lot of talented pilots were at the meet.
Mike, who does the FG fuses for Nick and Dino, is doing a FG fuse for a P-51B and SBD.
Steve talking to my buddy, Scott.
A view of the large grass runway.
Steve's evolution 260 gas, 7 cylinder radial engine.
Pretty impressive: at idle, the engine heads and even muffler O ring runs so cool that you can put your hand on it when on idle.

PJ and Patrick.
Mac's hobby shop: huge with just about anything needed to fix (or build) a plane.
Patrick's Meister ME109.
PJ, Dino and Patrick 'hamming it up'.
Doc's real nice Waco with a Moki 150 radial.
One that I've never seen modeled: Doc's F2G corsair: he made his own molds (If I remember correctly, 110").

Monster planes
Oct 13-15.
Final leg from Mac's place to Lakeland, Fl: 350 miles.
Another real nice field located on an airport. Frank leases the land and put in cement starting pads and a all grass 800' runway. Besides the large storage tent for planes, you can also rent 20' square tents along the pit area.
Minimum weight is 35 lbs: needless to say, my planes were on the 'small' side compared to the rest of the planes.
Moki radials were so common that it seems like at least one moki powered plane was in the 'air' during the entire meet.
As at Mac's, a lot of talented pilots with great looking planes were at the flyin.
Frank's 144" P-47.
Dave's 1/2 scale green waco.
Both powered by moki 400's.
Dave drove 4000 miles (west coast of Canada for the show: made my 1000 mile trip pretty short!).
Gary's comparf F4U.
Videos:

Doc's F2G.
Scott's 110" wildcat.
3W bearcat.
Scott's 144" P-47, also with a moki 400.
Ziroli hellcat, unlike mine, this one is fast with a 110 engine.
Turbine powered 163.
Tom's sea furry with a moki. He flew the plane many times and very scale flights.

Some carnage occurred!
A waco ran into the tail of a stearman right in front of my popups.
Both had radials so the cost was high.
They were doing formation flying.
I understand one person owned both planes.
Scott with his 144" P-47.
Don't see too many P-39's: scratch built.
Greg's real nice twin powered warthog.
Greg has turbine blades to simulate the full size:
Video of blades (cool):

(will re-post as video is malfunctioning)
