Status: offline 		I came out okay on the balance..( I was careful not to load up the tail with Extra glue) Right now it balances on the mark but that is with only one Flight battery and I plan to have a second back up battery in there next weekend and then recheck everything..a second Ni-Mi and switch wont add alot I think.... I weighed mine and just as it sits with one battery but could be flown, it weights 9 lbs, 1 ounce so I guess that is okay with a 91 4 stroke??? I place the motor at an angle in the cowling so my muffler just barely shows the tip but should have enough air out the same hole to keep the muffler heat down in the cowling...I have one change to make soon as I have time, I plan to change the pull wire for the bomb release to a 1/16" music wire, the braded cable is a little stiff since it makes a corner in the wing.. .. (we are painting the walls in the house and I am baby sitting a roofing crew too right now so with work, time is a little short) A wire will be a easier pull! That may be the only thing I wish I had done different on this plane or to just install a micro servo on the bottom of the wing (In the belly pan) to work the release.. Status: offline 		Well, I got a few mintues this morning so I thought I would catch up (Recooping from being on a ladder for 6 actual hours painting yesterday....I'm old now) Here are a few ideas I used when building the cowling..Take some time to get the cowling to fit with the motor mounted. I had to cut out for the rocker arm covers.. Have a little clearance for some vibration, yes, there will be a little..The fuel line showing is my fill hose for the Dubro Fuel dot later..I used the baffel templete they sent with the radial engine kit but you will actually have to cut it down about a 1/8" smaller to get in the front area of the cowl ring.. work it slow not to over cut, we want a snug fit. Cut a shape out of paper for the engine cut out and transfer that to the wood baffel while you are cutting..When happy with every thing fitting, tranfer the cutout shape to the radial engine and cut it carefully. these things are THIN! I used epoxy after I roughed up the back of the plastic for more glue bit...use 30 minute to give you time enough to align properly. After you get the cowling and baffel fitted just the way you need, its time to find the needle valves.. Take a scrape of Stiff paper and tape it back to the Fuse far enough to allow the cowling to be put back on. (I used the paper off the back of covering) Punch a hole for the location of the Needle valve. remove the NValve, install the cowl and make your hole where the paper contact the side . This put the hole right the first time. I plan to have a 1/16" music wire out the cowling with a wheel collar on the end for adjustment.. My motor has a allen head screw in the actual needle valve that allows me to tighten the music wire down. Hope yours turns out great and post some progress! I am getting close but still waiting on a back up battery. That;s my "to do " list stuck on the landing gear...Almost there! Take care! Terry

Status: offline 		One of my club members ask what the marking was on the clothes pins.. Some are pilot numbers from fun flys.. they give them to us when we sign in so we get the right radio back and other pins are ones I make. every time I start a new plane, I put the plane name on the pin and a date started., Makes me remember something about each plane...you forget how long ago that was...Fun for me anyway.

The top flite p-47 ARF manual said to have at least 6 square inches of opening for air to exit the cowling.
I have always used a 3 to 1 ratio.Air exit at least 3 times(or as close as I can get without destroying the cowl)
the size of where air enters when it is baffled. Cowling is cheaper to replace than an engine.

Status: offline 		nice build thread: thought I would add this: I built and flew this Top Flite kit for several seasons powered with an OS 120 pumped 4/C engine never having 'any' cooling issues. So perhaps the way Top Flite has the cowl flaps in a some what open position dare I say increases air flow-> thru the cowl past the power plant

I enjoyed mine so much I keep thinking of doing another.

Also the bigger opening lets me install my extension on the high speed needle valve
after installing the cowl.gives access room to tighten the set screw on the needle valve once the
extension is installed. On my extension I installed a Great Planes fuel dot(part #GPMQ4166) by center
driling it and then soldering it.To me looks better than just having a 90 degree turn on the end of it.

Also I found a pilot at the local Hobbytown that I am going to use.Found a slimline pilot that fits perfectly.
What better pilot to fly a WWII plane than the Duke himself.

With your motor baffled the way it is behind the dummy engine plate, you have more than enough exit without cutting any holes. The muffler will be fine... Just make sure there is adequate space between the cowl and the muffler. abs melts...

Status: offline 		Well guys, I havent done any more work on the plane but I did get the back up battery in the mail Thursday so I may install it Sunday.. I took the P-47 out today to the Kyle and Amanda Franklin Fund raiser at the airport..Had a good day and did some good to help a great couple in need.. Post something on what you have done on your plane and I will do the same in the next few days!

Status: offline 		Well sorry guys I haven't done much to my Jug recently, all my stuff is now outside and it's just been to cold to work on it. But I have finished my T-rex 550e and flown it about 6 times so far.....dang rain.... Well yesterday I finally got a topper for my truck so next I need to create a rack system to haul my 3 birds to the field. I'm hoping it will warm up significantly im the next week or 2 I am really wanting to get back to it. The only prep work I have left is fill in a couple gaps on the wing, apply a few fillets of epoxy/micro ballons to the tail fin and install the canopy fairings and then fiberglass it.. Well I will post my progress and pics when I get some. Talk to you all later.

Status: offline 		Ben, your tank roof will be okay. you could put just a little triangle stock in the gap. I applied Fiberglass tape to the corners just to make it stronger, since I was gonna use a four stroke anyway..
I didnt get any space like that but not really a problem... Thanks for posting.

I will use some triangle stock to reinforce the firewall area and fill the tank roof gap. I'll be putting in either a Saito FA-115, or the JBA 15cc gasser. Either way I want a sturdy mount up front! Very rainy here and we may still see some snow in the next few days.... Guess I'll have to try and get some more building done!!!

Status: offline 		Well I've been off track finishing up my PT-17 arf since March. I can never just build it out of the box always something to modify. Thats why I like this hobby, it keeps your mind thinking I will try to post a few pictures here of what I have so far. The fuselage is framed and half sheeted and I have modified the control surfaces to a more scale configuration and hinging, ideas I borrowed from another thread called "Dallas Blonde" by Connery. I worked out the retractable tail wheel and linkages and it's pretty cool. I will be using the DLE-20 for power and fiberglassing and paint for the finish. I posted a picture of my previous bird earlier in the thread and I will most likely start my own thread on this build. Enjoy for now, and if I can answer any questions feel free to ask here or PM me, I'm still learning here like the rest of us. Thanks to Terry again for sharing his work with us

Status: offline 		O.K last batch I promise I also added a picture of the custom pitts muffler I made for my PT-17 using a product called Alumaweld which allows you to solder aluminum and copper with a propane torch. Cool stuff.

Status: offline 		VERY GOOD. I like the look of your hinges...you are right: Much more scale look. I would like to see that tail wheel in person.. Good job. That is gonna be soo cool to have the tail wheel retract! Thanks for sharing. Learning like the rest of us, youre right. Ive been at it since 1970 but learn something every build plus I enjoy it that way...This alumaweld, Where can you get that product? Have you ran a muffler for any time with that type of seam?? That sure would be helpful on exhaust systems like you said.

Status: offline 		Terry I purchased it at my local Habor Freight, but you could order online from them http://www.harborfreight.com/pack-of-8-alumiweld-aluminum-welding-rods-44810.html I have not used it before but the test piece I did could not be broken even in a vise if it is done right. It melts @ 700 deg so it will hold up to the heat no problem. They say you can repair aluminum engine blocks with it. I will be trying it out this weekend when I maiden the Pt 17 so I will let you know.

Status: offline 		Well I'm glad to see everyone has gotten some work done on there "Jugs", I have gotten some work done on mine as well.  did start fiberglassing the wing, I got the lower half fiberglassed and  wrapped the remaining glass around to the top but have not applied any resin to the top yet. It's  looking good so far I'm quite pleased with the resin/ alcohol mix I'm using so far. My flaps and ailerons didn't turn out as nice as I was hoping for but some sanding will fix them, I just need to apply 1 more coat to them. Finish the top half of the wing, apply a second coat to both sides and then do some finishing work to the fuse and glass that. Then I'm ready for paint. I will get some pics posted of my glass job when I finish, if you guys want video of my process let me know and I will record it and post it for you.
