Hi Sean,
the wing nuts are metric M5, bolts should be with the delivered harware; I'm using butterfly bolts, so i don't need a tool to fix them.

I flew my 1.9 Futura the last 4 days in a row. Pablo Fernandez came in for the Greater Southwest Jet event in Waco TX and flew the Futura close to 20 times. He showed it very well. He put on some really spectacular flights with it.
I cant say enough great things about this jet! Pablo remarked it was a favorite. This jet will do it all!
Joey got some flights in too and really liked it as well.
Perfect size jet that assembles in just a few minutes. A real fuel and flyer, no hassle jet.
Gear work great.
I put the CG at 25mm and I think that is perfect. nose rotates before main gear on takeoff and I can do wheelies down runway on landing.
It has very axial rolls. Its rolls like on a rail!! does all manuevers with ease.
Jetcat P100 is perfect power for this jet.
some people that werent as crazy about the looks of my big Futura, but really liked the smaller one!
A real winner and a keeper!!
Very happy!!
thanks for pic Smitty!

Good report Scott.
I just got one myself and started putting it together last week. So far pretty smooth sailing. The quality of the glass work and internal structure of the wing is very clean and impressive.
Did you change anything or make any assembly recomendations?
I'm going to run a B100 in it and ordered a pair of smoke tanks from Bill Hatcher.

Here's some more... the little guy really had a presence in the air! (sounds almost as cool as the big one too!)

HI Sean,
Didnt change anything except follow the guys advise regarding CG.
Great size jet that flies much bigger.
I have heard that the smaller one doesnt quite fly as good as the big one, but I will have to disagree. It must be that the first ones were flown with bigger motors or the CG being to far forward cause this one is just as good and a couple guys thought better.
We were flying in 15-20 plus mph wind on last day and it handled it no problem.
You will love it.

Thanks for the extra pics James!!

Great feedback. I must admit it took me some time to warm up to the look of the Futura, but it's grown on me the more I see it, and I'm not sure I've ever read a poor flilght report on the model.
Are you using the stock hardware? Looks decent enough.
I just need to work out the hatch mounting and open up the inlets and then I should be ready to start painting mine. Nothing elaborate, but I figured it be best do it before I install all the gear and fly it....I suspect once I fly it I won't want to stop to paint it.
Here's mine as it was right out of the box.

Started adding some color to mine yesterday and today. I'm embarassed to admit to just how much masking there was for such a simple scheme. Only the red and blue (and black) are painted, the white is rubbed down gel coat. Even the white lettering is just the exposed gel coat.
Still need to add a few markings on the fuse and wing top/bottom then I'll be ready for clear.

Also ran the turbine with the powerbox smoke pump outside the airframe.

Nice scheme Sean.  I like the look better than the sport schemes and you made that big honkin canopy area look decent

One more thing

How you guys did manage to raise the height of nose gear for short take offs? Some packing inside struts?

Very nice one smchal, I would also be very intrested in seeing how you fitted the wing tips and how you have fitted the smoke system.

Paul

Thanks for the comps guys. Paul, I haven't started installing the gear yet in the airframe, but I ordered a couple of the Futura smoke tanks from Bill Hatcher (see earlier post in this thread) and will post some pics when I install them. They are designed to fit under the turbine mounting rails.

With regards to the winglets, I wasn't keen on taping them on as they would need to be removed before and after every flying session to take advantage of the nice wing bags that came with the kit. I've used a pair of 4-40 button head screws through a nylon washer in each tip. They thread into a 4-40 hex nut under the tip. I sanded the bottom of the winglet and fixed the nut with aeropoxy/hysol. Then I used some filler to blend it in to the tip. Not ideal, but it provides a very rigid mount and should be hidden well enough.

Here are a couple pics, hope it's helpful.

A shot of the tanks test fitted in the fuse. I'll clean up the holes and get them mounted properly when I start installing stuff.
Picked up my PPG clear today so hopefully I'll be ready to clear coat next week. Can't wait to fly it!!

I put some additional ply under the stock mount inside the fuselage but I'm not using the stock retracts, am using LADO R999s.

I wasn't aware of any need to shim the nose gear. Dom, what distance do you have from the bottom of the mounting rail to the wheel's axel?

20cm from the bottom of the stock ply mount to the middle of the axle. Wheels are 6cm diameter. Shim is 1cm and was mainly added because the width of the electric retracts was narrower than the mount. My nose retract is 100Deg with the trunion block reversed so it comes 10Deg above horizonal into the fuselage.

If you have the original gear from Tomahawk, you may get some parts (longer fork and pin, distancer) from the manufacturer  IQ-Hammer. I've got the parts last week, but didn't change it yet.

At the stage of installing gear. How are you guys installing your RX batteries? I was going to go with a pair of 2500mAh A123 packs up in the nose but was curious how people are securing them up there?

Thanks!

I found that my A123s fitted quite nicely into either side of the nose gear mount. I actually filled the forward part of the nose with builders foam to make it more resilient to nose damage...after I broke it off the first time.
