Hello to all whom will read this post. As a beginner heli pilot, I was looking for a good ccpm trainer/sport heli. The EXI 500 Plastic Edition from Nitro Airplanes seemed like a good choice. My total investment to get this bird to fly was $390.00. The components I stuffed into it was a mix of inexpensive, but well proven gear as well as some spare r/c stuff I have accumulated through the years of flying fixed wing. The heli flys great, is very stable, high quality, and easy to maintain. I would like to share my build info to help out any newbie considering building a 500 class E heli.

The stuff I had to buy most bought from Nitro Airplanes:
EXI 500 kit
Helium 1500kv outrunner
EXI 430mm main blades
Exceed RC Proton OPTO 60A ESC w/o bec
JR 3400 gyro servo ( bought at Hobby Town )
2 Sky Lipo 6s 2200 packs
Custom made training gear ( only $15 )

R/C stuff I had:
3 Hitec 225 Mighty Mini servos for the swash
Kool Flight Ubec
6100 Spectrum RX
Eflite 110 gyro

Heli is setup on my DX7 TX
Pitch and throttle curves are setup for normal flight mode as mentioned in the Align T Rex 500 manual.
I have to admit that helis are very exciting to fly and I know with a lot of patience, time, and practice the reward will be sweet. I just hope my airplanes do not get “jealous” nor lonely this season!

Mike

I'll apoligize first if I sound a bit harsh.  I can understand going cheap, but do yourself a huge favor and ditch that gyro.  That gyro is crap and you don't want go with a bottom grade gyro.  I used to use that same gyro on my Blade 400 and it was absolutely horrible.  I switched to a Futaba GY520 and the difference was huge.
As flying the heli, you will like the 500.  It is a good size to fly.

Yeah the gyro is crap. But you can get a used 401 for less than 50 bucks usually. Good job on the training gear! What did you use for the center peace? Looks like a good bird that will take you far in this hobby. I welcome the new rotor head!

The center peace and clips on the skid pipes I believe are made from nylon....I did not make it but a heli pilot whom I just met makes them.

It actually works darn good...I know the Futaba would be better, I wlould get the 401 if I had to but I like JR gear and would go for a JR gyro

If it works for you, great, but wait until you try to fly backwards or back it in.  I had mine washed out on me twice while backing it in.  That is why I went with a  good gyro.  BTW, JR isn't known for good gyro's either.  The 401 is a decent gyro, not great, but decent.  As you get your skills up, you'll find the cheap gyro's lacking and will buy better equipment.  So in the end, you end up spending more money.
