My Windows 7 PC always has a notice pop up and shuts down the IE as a precaution I assume.

My older XP machine has no issues with RCU at all and it is how I now surf here.

Windows 7 64 bit with Norton.

I was initially getting warnings from the above noted website which were caught by the Norton. Several days ago I started getting notices about 3rd party cookies which my browser IE8, is set to ask if I want to allow them rather than attempted intrusion notices from the Norton. I've rejected about 5 3rd party cookies from RCU under various names and have not had a problem the last two days or so. I've run Norton scans as well as the Super AntiSpyware and there's nothing on my computer so maybe you guys might want to try a similar action?

Just a thought.....

There is however issues with youtube videos as I noted in;
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=10388322

What RCU server are you on when you see such?
[go to Buy/Sell, then look at bottom of that page]

I'm on RCU4, at the moment.

Your exact quote is the problem, so fix the damn thing.

Whining & complaining to the various RCU staff is utterly useless, as they no longer have direct access to the (NEW) IT staff.

I'm still getting warnings as of March 13 -

I belong to a few gaming forums that have this problem every now and then and they fix it within days if not hours. It's been going here for way too long.

You need to learn how this all works, then you'd understand better. Until then, whining here is utterly useless.

As to not needing to contact the new owners, well neither do you need to lock your car, your home doors, nor windows, nor use better defenses on your PC. It's all relative to what's most important to you.

Viruses, worms, bots, malware, rootkits, trojans.....all such nasties don't have a chance of penetrating a multi-layered defense.
Learn how to better protect your PC so ANY compromised web site you might visit can't infect you.

Nobody can help you, if you don't first help yourself!

Well, maybe this is the right place to post some tips on how to setup the PC for better defense.
Can someone give tips on how to setup a multi layer defense?

Browsing the web with the false assumption that your favorites sites are always
clean, and that you only need an A/V program for protection, are open invitations
to get some form of malware. It's not a case of "if", but one of "when". The
script kiddies thrive on Windows PC users with that attitude.

Most of us keep our vehicles and homes locked from physical entry by those we want
kept out. Why not do your best to lock down electronic entry via your PC?

What I'll list here is ONLY a guide, NOT a must have, nor a cure all. I'll list my
favorites for PC protection. You decide what's most important to you.

After you implement these, you too will then have a multi-layered defense.
What one level doesn't block the nasties, the next level should, and so on.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Suggestions for safer web browsing (the simple basics version) for Windows PC users;

#1) For cable/DSL users get yourself a router, then (change administrator password)
and use encryption on WiFi portion + very long passwords. Many routers provide
hardware based firewalls, and are a great first line of defense. Even if you only have
1 PC, they're still a great means of defense. Consider a router to be like a locked
fense around your home.

#2) Use a better 'HOSTS' file!

Windows uses a file for web browsing called HOSTS. When you
type in -or- click on a link to say www.towerhobbies.com you're
sent to 173.203.188.250 which is their IP address. Many web sites
have other sites linked to them in order to show us images and
advertisements. Not all sites are always clean of malware.

Some very smart computer folks have created modified HOST files
for us to use, which already have the very worst web sites blocked.
Such sites are well known to be compromised and contain malware.

The MVPS HOSTS file was recently updated [February-18-2011]
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Download: hosts.zip (150 kb)
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip

How To: Download and Extract the HOSTS file
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts2.htm

HOSTS File - Frequently Asked Questions
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hostsfaq.htm

Editors Note: As time has progressed the focus of this project has changed from
just blocking ads/banners to protecting the user from the many parasites that now
exist on the Internet. It doesn't serve much purpose if you block the ad banner
from displaying as most other HOSTS files do, but get hijacked by a parasite from
an evil exploit or download contained on the web site. The object is to surf faster
while preserving your Safety, Security and Privacy.

They update their HOSTS file every few months, so check back for the latest version.

#3) Do NOT run Windows W2K/WinXP/Vista/Win 7 in an 'administrator' account, use a
regular 'user' account. Better system security.
Running Windows as an 'administrator' is like handing the bad car repair guys your
car key ring WITH your house keys on it.

#4) Do NOT use MSIE[Explorer] for anything but Windows Updates!
For ALL other web activity I much prefer to use FireFox
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Once installed, in it, go to Tools|AddOns.... then search
for NoScript, then for AdBlock Plus and install those two.
Maybe I should have listed this one as #1.

#5) Change all your online passwords often. Use a mix of upper & lower case, with some
odd characters thrown in. Something around 13+ characters in length.

#6) A good A/V program.
This one is your choice. Better ones have a software firewall that controls incoming as
well as outgoing access.

With any of the above, keep them updated and do so often!!!

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The following items are more optional items.

http://www.sandboxie.com/
Sandboxie runs your applications in an isolated abstraction area called a sandbox.
Under the supervision of Sandboxie, an application operates normally and at full
speed, but can't effect permanent changes to your computer. Instead, the changes
are effected only in the sandbox.

Close a Sandboxed application down, and any nasties you might have picked up vanish!

SpyBot Search & Destroy;
http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

Test your PC's connection security by testing for open 'ports' at;
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
Home of GRC.com's ShieldsUp port testing tool.

Further information on each of the above, can be found by visiting
those web sites.

Your whining and complaining does not fall on deaf ears. And further, I personally don't consider it whining and complaining. I have to put up with same as everyone else (more than everyone else actually) and nobody wants a resolution more.

We believe the problem was related to a hidden back door, making any fixes irrelevant. We should not be seeing these attacks any further.

RCU now as the advantage of a large IT team to handle these situations, a dedicated programmer, and the focus is on moving forward to bigger and better things. RCU will be more secure than ever, faster, cleaner, simpler to use. RCU will take advantage of the best in community software. Great things are coming, but we unfortunately have to deal with the inevitable bugs first.

Every single member is important to me, RCU and IB. I've been here since day one as one of the first few members, and I have no plans of going anywhere else. IB is committed to the vision Marc established in this community and most importantly the members that make up the community on RCU.

Keep "whining". Keep "complaining". We wouldn't be anywhere without you guys, and you're our first line of communication when it comes to problems on the site. Thank you for your continued support.

The deaf ears issue probably relates to so many 'canned' responses by RCU staff, with little in the way of true informational updates.

We all hope what you state about a better RCU comes true someday. But, for the registered RCU users as well as the many lurkers, plus advertisers, and Market Place users, that future prospect is one of those "show me" issues.

Viruses/worms/bots/root kits/trojans/malware in general are all over the internet, from a web site's home page, to the various links they use. RCU isn't the first site to get nailed. It's still a valid issue for users to better protect their PC's from these bugs.

Hopefully IB has fixed RCU's problem in this one area. For the past 2 days I've not seen any here.

All of the comments regarding "users to better protect their PC's" are valid and correct. It is not uncommon for a bug to slip through.

BUT...

IT IS STILL THE REPONSIBILITY OF THE SITE TO MAINTAIN A SAFE SITE.

This was reported to RCU on 2/20 (or perhaps earlier). If it has in fact been corrected, it took at least 3 weeks. Not acceptable. And lets not forget how often we wait for 5 to 10 minutes for the site to actually open in our browsers only to get the old "timed out" error. Either your "large IT team" is totallay inept or they just don't give a %#@&.

RCG is making this claim -
"Hey we just did the math and we're juuuust under 10,000 posts per day!
...and our nearest rival (RCU) is getting just over 2,000 posts/day according to big-boards.com."

I can believe it. I'm not getting time outs at RCG. I'm not getting virus alerts. Sorry RCU - I'm gonna say a few goodbyes the I'm outta here.
