Default VQ 60 Size Hurricane with DLE 20

Got a DLE 20 from Santa and installed it in my VQ 60 size Hurricane. Tired of getting riped off for glow fuel and the mess. This Hurricane is several years old and has had 3 engines, 91 FS, 120 FS and now the DLE 20. Had to build mounts and put the batteries as far forward in cowl as possible to get correct cg. Had to use a straignt pipe as there is simply no room for any kind of muffler with out butchering the cowling. Test ran on the ground a couple of weeks ago and tuned engine. 15-8 Graupner three blade prop turning about 8,800 rpm. Idle 1,700. Plane has Spring Air retracts, Robart struts and larger wheels 3.5" and wheel wells. Weights 10 lbs with the gasser. The DLE 20 is lighter than the OS 120 FS but the batteries are not as for farward as the heavy hub was so there was about an 8 oz increase in weight. Snow finally melted off field and had one day window before next snow storm. Engine started and ran great. This engine has LOTS of POWER. Even running a little rich, the plane can climb straight up as far as I need and can do rolls in a 45 degree up line as long as you want. Flew through all imanuvors without a hicup. The little bit of extra weight didn't affect landing that I could tell. No reason for me to use a glow engine again.

looks good, glad to see you like it. I put a DLE20 in my 60 sized TFGE P-40, there was just enough room for the stock
muffler. otherwise its completely hidden. no reason anybody should be using glow if the plane calls for a 90 2-stroke
& up. I plan on putting a DLE20 in my 73" Me 109 also. I went with a larger prop 17x8 3-blade. I should expect somewhere
around 8300 rpm. also, glad to see you didn't go the electric route on this one.

Experten109, I've got a kit built Top Flight P-40 also, with an OS 120 FS and am considering replacing the 120 with a DLE 20. The top of the cowl is not removable. Is yours like that? If so I would like to see pictures. Here is the P-40 with the 120.

i'll post a pic when I get to my regular computer.. but I forget to mention I had to
give the carb a 180 degree turn becouse the top is non-removable (kit). so I can make
carb adjustments.

I might have a pic on this one.. let me see if I can find it.

Very nice set up. How did you make your exhaust pipe. I may have to do the same with my Stuka. What material did you use and what type of weld.

had one pic.. the red circle is where I had to grind the supplied mount for choke lever clearance,
and the blue circle is the throttle lever which I had to flip 180 degrees to clear the choke ( I did those
2 mods after I took this pic).

Zulu91, I used a 1/2" aluminum tube, 1/16 or so aluminum sheet, muffler sealer from the auto supply store. No welding. I squeezed down the tube to make it oval to fit the exhaust port, cut the base plate using the gasket as a guide and the the top plate so it would just pass over the pipe. Used muffler sealer to seal up and clamp together with nuts and bolt. Not too tight or will bend the aluminum. The when sealer was dry, dressed down with file around the egdes and then installed on engine. The mounting bolts hold every thing together.

I made four cuts in the tube and flaired out as you can see. It works ok. A bit loud but where I fly is not real noise sensitive.

Experten109, Thanks. I may try installing a DLE 20 in the P-40. It could use a little more power. I had an OS 120 FS in the Hurricane, and it turned the 15-8 three blade 8,250 rpm. The DLE turns the same prop 8,800 and that is running a bit rich. I may put a removal hatch in the P-40 and the Hurricane for access to the needles.

Steel weld putty should work great as long as it can take the heat. Here is a picture of the exhaust side of the Hurricane cowling. Not very obtusive.

It looks as though I have a fellow flyer who thinks along the same lines.Although I maily fly giant scale As a engine dealer for various engine manufacturing as well as your brand,I like speed and likke to show people how they can utilize a gasser in small planes as well. I have fitted many engines in planes such as yours with success. The first was a modeltch p47. Great vertical rolling rate. Now that was a nice size cowl the latest is in a BH Models Chipmunk. It has a very tight cowl as you will see in the photos. It is their small Chipmunk. To accomodate a mufller I utilize one of the products that we manufacture.

Bean does the DLE fly it with authority ? I'm curious if it would fly some of the 72" ESM planes just as well , my thinking is it would be a great fir cowl in perfectly
On your VQ hurricane I've read some complaints about the covering and you mentioned you've had this one for some time, how's is it holding up ?

The DLE 20 flies the VQ Hurricane with plenty of authority. I think it would be enough to fly the 72" wing span ESM models in at least a scale like manner. In fact I have an RCGF 20 cc rear carb engine in a 72" span Hurricane, which weights 13.3 lbs, and it flys it in a scale like manner. I thank the DLE has more power than the RCGF so it should do better.

The covering on the VQ was coming loose on the rudder and elevators and I recovered while I had the plane in maintaince for engine change. Don't really need this much power, but the 15 and 17 cc gas engines are almost as large and just as heavy and have half the power.

Flew the Hurricane again last Saturday. The power was great, but it was LOUD. I've come to the conclusion that I'll ware out my welcome if I fly this plane very much. I'm going to have to put some sort of muffler on it. I have an RCFG w/o a muffler, but this DLE is louder. I ordered the little header for the DLE 20 from Virginia Model Builders. Maybe it will fit without too much damage to the cowling. http://vamodelbuilders.com/dle-20amp...026202326.html

yeah, the DLE make .3 more horsepower then the rcgf and the DLE20 engine w/ muff & ignition is a good
9.5 ounces lighter the the rcgf too.

Yes, for this size gasser or a 30 the DLE is the only way to go. Tried to put a baffle on the end of the pipe to quiet down the DLE 20, but it didn't work. Removed it. Leaned out a little more and now its turning the 15-8 three blade 8,950 - 9,000 rpm. No more popping or four cycling. Don't know how long this engine will last but it great so far.

I gave up on the exhaust system. Was getting grumbles about how LOUD it was at the club. Worried about niegbors etc. Tried the hedder from Virginia Model Builders but it really was't any quieter. Pitts won't fit, or if it did the can would be too close to the ignition modual, probably too much heat for it. Thought about moving the ignition modual inside and above front of gas tank, but that is were my fuel filler and plumbing is located. Couldn't find anything on the market I thought would work, and didn't want to spend the money for a custom made muffler and pipe, so just installed the stock muffler. Now that the engine is getting broken in, it was turning 9,150 rpm with the straight pipe, now 9,050 with the stock muffler. Not quiet, but acceptable. Flew it one last time with the straight pipe. In the air it way screaming, really winding up in the turn and coming back over the field after take off. Just not enough room in the cowling after putting both batteries and ign modual up front.

I made a muffler for my MDS 148 with a 3/4 LL from Home Depot found in the electrical dep. Had the same problem with my CMPro P47 couldn`t get an in cowl muffler to fit with out butchering the cowl . Only thing though this is a diesel engine. So I screwed on a gas line flex pipe to the LL and ran the exhaust all the way back to the tail. through the body. It is nice and quiet. Diesel engines don`t mind long exhaust tubing, not sure about gas. It should work still but not sure on power loss.

Never thought of using a gas line flex pipe. Do you think that would take the heat of gasoline exhaust?
