down section and use it more freakquentally.

"Time Out"-- Use or not use the dictionary if you want. It's time

rreiss,
I agree whole-heartedly. Many people do not take spelling and grammar all that seriously. One thing that kind of stuck with me after I got out of the military is that anytime you put something in writing for others to read, it is a reflection on you. It actually becomes somewhat of a representative of you in your absence. By signing your name to it, you are basically authenticating to your readers that you have checked what you have written for accuracy of content, spelling and grammar. They may never have the chance to know you personally, so the only thing they have to form an impression of you is that piece of writing.

Of course, in this setting people may not care so much. But I still think it's a good idea to try to catch mistakes before I post anything (personally).

BTW, this doesn't mean everyone has to start flaming me everytime I *DON'T* catch a mistake.

Russ.

I know I dont spell everything right and half the time its just because I'm in a hurry or either I have a youngun screaming in my ear but......Different people come from different educational backgrounds. Some people are very smart, some people aren't. No matter how bad somebody may misspell words on a given post I would never look down on them. For all I know that particular person could have a learning disability or some other problem that I dont know about. There is an untold story behind every face.

Well said, mulderman. We are all a little bit warped in one direction or another. When I had the fishing fever, I was not too proud to go fishing with anyone, young or old, pro or novice, as long as they didn't get too drunk or abusive. Now that I have the flying fever, I welcome anyone who likes to fly to our field. Being hung up on spelling and grammar is just another hang-up--good to poke fun at, and from. Laugh it off, and let's go fly!

Well... If I gave you the impression that I am hung up on grammar then I apologize. I guess I didn't get my point across. I am not looking down on anyone for misspelling a word or two here. As I mentioned, in a casual setting like this forum, no one really cares.

I do agree with rreiss because I see this all the time where I work. People are posting company wide emails that I can sometime barely make sense of because they have left out entire words, misspelled others - and these are people with degrees!!!

Here is a classic example - Recently the CEO of our company moved on to bigger and better things. Now the board of directors is conducting a search for our new CEO. In the interest of actively participating in this process, the management in our company conducted a poll asking employees what they would like to see in their new CEO. This information was then compiled into a short letter (about 1/2 page), which was given to the board of directors with the intent that it be presented to each candidate. This letter was also emailed to all employees. When I read it, I was appalled!!! I found no less than three mistakes!!! And this letter is representing me to the candidates???

My point is that there are times when it DOES matter.

Russ.

Thanks for the replies.
I am far from using correct diction or spelling of all words. That's
why I have the Webster's in my pull-down. Not making fun of
someones misspelled words, but instead saying that we should
have as much pride in how we present ourselves to others as the
pride we have in building and flying our planes. I grew up in a
time when more effort was placed on proper grammar; and when I see our friends from Europe posting with better grammar, it
reflects on our pride to use proper English.

This was just a tip or suggestion not a mandate.

Well.......maybe I took it the wrong way. If I seemed anal then I apologize. I thought someone was getting jabbed at. I do very little typing so needless to say...I henpeck on the keypad. Alot of times I dont even use caps just to save time. And being that I dont type alot I am going to make mistakes that I know better than make but my fingers just slip up.......John

My grammar is far from perfect and my spelling could be better (apart from anything else I'm spelling in English while you may be reading in American). However I confess that I simply don't bother to read anything which is very poorly written.

Sorry John but I particularly dislike people who can't be bothered to use proper capitalisation (and even worse, punctuation) because it's quicker for them. I particularly hate "shouting", leaving the caps lock on and posting in all capitals.

If any of you are thinking "its a free country i can rite how i like", you might want to consider that there is only one of you saving a few seconds and there may be hundreds of us readers wasting our time trying to decipher your messages. Personally I regard trying to make my messages readable as a simple courtesy.

Steve

There is a big difference between not capitalizing the first letter in every sentence and writing an article that isn't legible. I totally agree with what you said about the CAPS. Im not sure about the other AMERICANS but I speak and type in English. Now......We are getting way off the subject of RC. Im sorry I opened my mouth about this post and I really hope the moderators lock it up before anybody has any hard feelings since we are getting on the subject of a free country.. Once again I'm sorry I voiced my opinion and I'm equally as sorry if I have made any mistakes in this post. Please dont hate or even "particularly dislike" me for it....................John

I have noticed a lot of the younger generation having problems with grammar and spelling, what I would like to know is where are our school tax dollars really being directed?

I agree that what you write and how you spell is an indication of how you are perceived by fellow modelers. However, spelling isn't everything, and here's an example: Several years ago I knew of a fellow in a club nearby, probably in his 50's, that could do anything with an R/C airplane. He was so good that he made the rest of us look like beginners - but he never flew in competition. When I inquired from some of his fellow club members - why? - I couldn't believe the answer. He could neither read nor write, and therefore he could not fill out the necessary forms to fly in competition. He was also too ashamed to let anyone do the bookwork for him. It's a secret he kept to himself - and most people never knew. But he was a great guy to know!

Come on, brothers and sisters! This topic started out in good fun, but we're now drifting into deep water. Let us admire and appreciate the upholders of the language when they speak and write in their best fashion, but let's also recognize that editorial orthodoxy is not strictly co-virtuous with the desire and capacity to profit from a healthy exchange of rc lore and technique. Everybody shake hands, and let's see your airplanes!
