Mixing ones own fuel can make sure that the fuel is always consistent in all ingredients, initially the cost for all of the components is more than just buying a gallon or two of fuel at the LHS, but look at it this way a mix that is 15% Nitro 8% Syn. oil 5% Castor oil 72% Methanol uses.....

Nitro: 19.20 Fluid OZNitro Methane $42.00 per Gallon will make 6 1/2 Gallons at this amount

Syn. oil: 10.24 Fluid OZ-Syn oil $10-$12 per Quart ( approx.) will make 3 1/4 gallons

Castor oil: 6.40 Fluid OZ-Castor $20.00 per Gallonwill make 20 Gallons 

Methanol: 92.16 Fluid OZ $3 - $5 per 1 gallon-will make 1.4 Gallons

So to mix 1gallon of home brew fuel the cost will be roughly.......

Nitro$6.46

Syn oil-$3.52

Castor oil-$1.00

Methanol-$2.85

Total cost $13.77 per Gallon

With the initial cost of supplies being $77.00 which will make a minimum of 3 1/4 and if you go all castor it will even be cheaper...

The more Nitro used is what drives the price up quick but even at 20% Nitro the cost will only change a couple of bucks per Gallon

This is why in the near future I plan to mix my own, plus it will give me something extra to mess with and I can mix a quart at a time if I want and experiment at figuring out the mixture my engines really like the best.....

Keep in mind - some states have HEFTY hazmat fees for shipping nitro.  In my case, i get hit with a state and city fee, so it isn't economical to make my own nitro until i'm ordering nitro in a full case of 4 gallons or more (same fee regardless of amount)

understanding that 4 gallons of nitro will make an IMMENSE amount of fuel - its good to partner up with a ocal RC group or friends, to split the cost and the fuel ( the amount of fuel would go bad since it absorbs water over time... and would take years for me to go through on my own unless i got into big rc planes or something)

I use castor and syntehtic  - Klotz techniplate as the majority of the oil mix, and a smaller percentage than listed above, as a safety measure. Organic oils have a higher burn temp...   that's right - a syntehtic oil will burn sooner (hence cleaner) in the combustion process..  which is a good thing and a bad thing.  Good if everything is running perfectly..   it'll be a cleaner burn.  Less varnish, less mess, etc.  Bad because - lets face it...  we all tend to push our machines..   castor oil is better when you're running too hot, or lean, etc...  it'll cling around for that last bit of dieseling to coat things before being burned up.  

If you can get high concentrate nitro locally (try drag strips)  then making your own is a MUST.  you get to control the quality of the product, and save money too.   If you have to ship it, and get hit with hazmat - it can still work out per gallon... but you have to order enough to justify it, and almost certainly split the quantity with someone.
