I have a Peak Power-Maxx 2400 mah ni-cad that keeps venting when I charge it. My chargers have settings for 1, 2, and 4 amps It was not until recently that it started to do this and every time I charge the battery it vents every 10-15 min. Is it getting to hot or is it going bad or is it something else. ? I charge it at the 4amp setting. Also are the gasses it releases dangerous? When I use the battery it does not normally vent but once today it did and it has not done this before until the last couple days.

1) You are charging it too fast. Not all Ni-Cds can accept fast charge at the rate you are using.

2) The vented gas is oxygen. But along with this could come some liquid (vapor) electrolyte which is corrosive and can burn you.

3) What rate are you discharging the battery to cause it to vent? Vents of this type are usually.

4) What is the nature of the venting? Popping noise, hissing????

All I know is that I run this in my Emaxx and it lt lasts for about 10 minutes on 2 battery packs that are both identical and when I charge it makes just a slow his for 2-3 seconds.
