Gentlemen. I've recently fabricated an engine cowl layup with fibreglass. It was a trial piece before I commit to making the, "good" layup. I'm pleased with what I was able to do practicing. One problem that I've discovered is that paint will not stick to the layup. Can anyone give me some advice on how to prepare a freshly minted fibrerglass component for painting. Thanks.

I am assuming you laid up the cowl inside a female mold into which was applied a coat of releasing agent. mold release agents will leave some residue on the finished part when removed from the mold. Usualy washing the outside of the finished part with warm soapy water will remove the residue. Depending on the release wax used it may be necessary to use automotive wax/silicone remover. Unfortunately this material is not cheap.

If your finished part has a glossy surface then sand it to flatten the gloss then prime and paint. I use automotive paints exclusively, I cannot comment on other types of paint.
