Hi, I am planning to buy my first Jet. I have only experience from regular RC plane.
I have been looking around and I found the PST Reaction to be a candidate, is this good choice as the first Jet? How is it to take off and land on grass, with this model?

I will buy a new Radio for use with Jet, what radio is recommended and how many channels should I buy. I will buy a radio I still can use if I advance to a more advanced Jet.

What Jet engine should I buy for this model? Is the PST Jets good?
Is it other Jet engines to recommend, or I should look at? I want to buy an Jet engine I can bring over to a new airplane in the feature. When I have learned to fly, then I will probably go for an F-4 or F-16.

What equipment do I need to complete this model, if I buy the ARF?

What type of servos, amounts etc do I need for this jet? What type of electronic equipment do i need?

I’m a rookie, so I hope I can get a lot of tips.

Good first choice jet! I have been flying mine for 2 years with ??? how many flights now. I lost count.

I have a Jet Central Super Eagle (from Eric Clapp) which was considered on the high powered side when they first came out with the upgrade to the 3.8 liter tank. I used the PST UAT and like it. The JC turbine has been flawless-Period-zero complaints and their service is 2nd to none.

I used the pro link struts which you can get from BTE or Dream works as a PST reaction package and love them. If you fly off grass I would recommend them highly and they also will smooth out the landing learning curve a little. I used BVM's breaks & wheels, retract valve and smooth stop. I had that just happened to have the wheels and breaks from there F-86 ducted fan kit that were spares and the right size.

I use all JR radio gear a 2.4 12X, DS 8411 on all controls 2 ail, 2 flap, 1 elev, 1 rud, 1 nose wheel steering. Read all the threads on BTE's site for updates and building tips and suggestions. (3) Dura-lite batteries 2 flight 1 ECU lith-ion a power box dig. switch w/regulators.

there are a few options
best advice get into a jet with not bad flying characteristics
also get an engine with capability of flying more advanced jets
i believe pst will need atleast a 120 size or 28 lbs engine
maybe might be a bit much or overwhelming
my best suggestion for first jet would be
1 boomerang elan rated best choice for first jet fast slow and acrobatic
i have one with a 19 lb jet central rabbit flies great i ve had two at over 400 flights
and they dead stick wonderfully
2 cermark f 16 is also a good idea there is one on r c u in ft lauderdale my buddy is selling
make an offer and we can fly this weekend
3. with all the changes that jr is doing i would suggest to go with futaba 10c i have this as well and very economical
call me with questions i will be at markam saturday am 3-26

Status: offline 		I have hundreds of flights on my PST Reaction, 120 powered, alothough I have seen Bruce of BTE models fly his with 18 pounds and it flies very nicely as well. it is a very good flyign aircraft with no bad habits, built light with a 18 pound thrust it will land so slow it is unbelievable. never flown mine off of grass but think it would do fine.

Status: online 		I had one with a super eagle and it was a blast . but too heavy (due to the extra fuel tank and nose weight required for CG balancing). For a novice, I would recommend a Rabbit. A friend of mine has that combination and it works really well.

I you are set in 30Lbs+ , then go with a lighter Cheetah. However I manage to bend the aluminum spar in flight!, so not really recommended.

Status: offline 		I'm flying a Reaction 54 powered by a Wren 54 Mk3 (14# - 15# thrust). Sans fuel, the plane weighs 23 lbs.

Most pilots would consider this severely underpowered, but it flys fine off asphalt - gets off in about 300 ft. I think it would take off OK on grass, given a couple hundred more feet. In the air it isn't what I would call slow. Estimate 110 - 120 mph at full throttle. In my opinion, it's a perfect trainer if you don't overpower it. It has no bad habits that I can find.

It's extremely easy to takeoff, land, and fly. Landings are in the 30 mph + range with 80 degrees (full) flaps.

PM me if you have any questins, or post them here.

The ARF kit is very well done . . . everything fits perfectly (on mine at least), and there is more than enuf room to install all your equipment. The new (redesigned) brake system that PST makes for it is excellent. I strongly recommend you use a "progressive" brake valve because the brakes are very strong and will lock up at full pressure.

I will prefer to buy a Jet engine I can use for the feature, and maybe also on feature models like FB F-4 & F-16.

Get the new JetCat P100. SUPER simple install. Get a JR 9 or 12 channel radio. Get the DreamworksRC landing gear and wheels package. Use good quality digital servos. Go have fun! Remember....... "I can't afford cheap" applies to turbine powered models AND helis.

Status: online 		For size, I think 20-24 Lbs is best for starter in the Reaction. If you want an engine that can be used in many airframes, I think 30 Lbs is best. However you want to avoid a heavy engine. So look for newer generation, lightweight ones (hence my recommendation for the Cheetah)

For brand, you can do a search here. a lot of threads discuss the pro and cons of each brand. I own 3 Jet Central and I think its the best combination of value, service and warranty.

Fully agree on the dreamworks struts package. Get good servos for Elevator and flaps at least.

Status: online 		On the radio front get something that will grow with you with as many channels as possible, the Futaba FG8 is upgradable to 12 proportional channels and two switched, with an S-Bus Rx its capable of 18 channels, if you can look at the Futaba 12FG more mixes built and very capable for not a lot of outlay, it also can use the S-Bus Rx.

Status: offline 		My first jet was also the PST Reaction. Over 150 flights before doing something different. 95% of my flying was off grass. I originally had the pst gear ( the old non trailing link) I later went with The Dream works trailing gear and eliminated at lot of gear related issues. I flew mine with a Jet Central Falcon @ 22lbs of thrust for about 35 flights or so and had good performance. No problems off grass and the speed is in the 150 MPH range. I had the opportunity to trade up to a 30lb thrust Super Eagle and now I had more vertical performance and the speed picked up to the 175-180 MPH range. But I had to install extra fuel tanks to maintain a decent run time and I had to add some additional lead in the nose, (mine is the original short nose), to compensate for the heavier motor. plane handled the extra weight fine.

For most of my flying I actually turned my Super Eagle down to 26-27 lbs of thrust with little degradation in overall performance but picked up a bit more run time on the same fuel load.

If I were to build a new Reaction I would power it with the Jet Central Cheetah. Slightly more more power than my Super Eagle and much lighter and better fuel economy.
Turn the motor down to around 25lbs of thrust for your first flights and you will have great performance that will put a smile on your face.

If you are getting the plane from Bruce Thorpe @ BTE, he will provide excellent service and advice if you need it.

If you go with a Jet Central turbine, Eric Clapp @ Jet Central USA will do the same.

Since this is your first turbine you will have questions and those two guys will make it a pleasant experience

I going on my 3rd year flying mine. P-80SE powered with smoke and Pro-Link gear, it tips the scale at 31 LBS, 10OZ (full fuel and smoke oil).

... It's fun jet and super easy to fly/land.

BTE has a list of servo sizes suggested for the surfaces.. it's a list of Futabas, Jr's and Hitechs, I think he has the list on his website.

Now that made me laugh if you consider that flying off grass, that is flatter than most Asphalt in Europe.

I used Hitecs on mine also. You will have to cross reference to the 79 series as mine were installed a couple years back. One 5985 on each aileron, rudder, and elevator. 5645 on the flaps with with one reversed using a Hitec servo programmer and a "y" harness. A 5645 on the nose gear steering and a couple of JR standard sport servos on the retract and brake valves.

Oh mike mike mike,

We reallllllly need to meet one day!

You do have a point as the fellow that takes care of my home field has it pretty well manicured. In the states we try not to fly of the same field where we grow our crops and raise our cattle.

I have flown it off much worse but just don't have a vid to show for it.

Wait a minute, here is one with some taller grass for your viewing pleasure. In fact while taxing you can actually see the landing gear springs stretch just a little bit.

In the UK, you only have sunshine 2 weeks out of the year so you don't have time to smooth a field, you gotta fly while the sun is out.

Doesn't the snow fill in the ruts?

DVD's are good but get busy spending money on the real thing.

Trust me, nothing feeds the addiction like hearing your own turbine spin up!!

Do you have a link to the DreamworksRC landing gear and wheels package you refer to? 

Whats the price and thrust on the JetCat P100, I like the JetCat turbins?

How does your model fly with the P-80, do it have enough power to fly from grass?
Is this a good engine for the first jet?
