Tim, if you will remove the clip on the end of the air control valve, the piston will slide out. Take a pin or needle and run it through the tiny holes in the cylinder while running hot water over it. Blow it out and soap up the piston O-rings and rinse with hot water, then lubricate with white lithium grease. Do it before you install, will save you some trouble. Then get a set of Robart quick disconnects, two sets one for each wing...the provided threaded disconnects will leak because the O-ring will pop out of the seal area if screwed together too tight or if you put too much air into the air tank.

Jimmy

Thanks for that heads up. Will do on the valve. I already have robart hose I was planning to use. I may have some extra connectors left from my P-51 build. I'll try the included ones first just to see.

Get yours flown!

Hey Jimmy, where have you been? Actually, where is everyone? I finally have my throttle worked out. Playing with the retracts finally. Figured there would be more flight reports by now.

Good luck all,

Tim

Tim,
Glad to hear you have the throttle worked out Ive been working this week I was on vacation last week and got to contribute a lot of time to the build and thread. Today Im getting ready of our 3rd annual Cub and Nostalgic aircraft fly in Weather has not been good though Forecast looks ok but marginal...we will take whatever comes. The Hellcat nearly maiden Wednesday. Everything was going well, taxied to the threshold, powered up nice and gradual to counter any torque, tail came up, went to full power, then just before she broke ground she took a full 90 degree turn to the left!!!!!!!!! I immediately pulled the power back to idle just before she hit the tall weeds. Whooooo!!!! I pulled her free from the weeds and drug her back to the pit area for a look see, then the rain started again I disassembled looking for damage and found none. Got loaded and drove home. I got to the shop and looked over the gear to see if I could find any damage. Everything looked perfect except for one problem...the left wheel was locked up on the axle Had to put it in a vice to get the wheel loose! Emery clothed the axle and inside of the hub and put a good healthy coat of grease on the hub...greased the right one too. Talk about lucky, if I had gotten off the ground then landed with a locked wheel it could have been curtains!!! Anyway, lesson learned, metal to metal axle and hub...grease it up or it will get hot!

That was lucky. Sounds like the issues my flying buddy has frequently with wheel pants. Always seems to have a collar come loose so wheel rubs. He usually doesnt make it to the runway. He has a bad elbow and cant tighten anything.

Its very slow going with me and the Hellcat. Was sure I'd be finished by now.I'm a whiner I know. If wife isnt taking all time my daughter is. Working on retracts now.

Check everything at least twice once you get back to the field and FLY that thing!

Good luck this weekend,

Tim

You will get to it, just keep plugging Recheck? You bet!! I have rechecked the air system and have the needles set real nice on the engine, and now that the axles are properly greased I believe she is going to be another success story I feel for your buddy, Ive seen a lot of guys have something separate from the airplane and when its a wheel, a guy can get screwed in short order! Tomorrow should be the big debut. BTY the plane did track very well on take off before the wheel locked up, so she does ground handle very nicely

Just an FYI someone reported a couple typos in the manual and I have corrected them. The revised manual is online at

http://wildharerc.com/downloads/documents/hellcat%2085%20manual.pdf

One correction changed a spec about balance. It was supposed to say that weight on the tail to balance the fuse shold be 7 to 12 oz., but it actually said 7 to 2 oz. This was made clear in the other text so I doubt it could be misinterpreted but that typo is now corrected.

Thanks.

Did the maiden flight plus five this afternoon. Three clicks down and two right ail. This plane flys great. Tried landings with full flaps and with no flaps. Couldn't tell much differance. With the gear up there is a noticable increace in speed. I'm flying a TOC53 with a WH 22-a prop. Take off and fly around with half power. Looking forward to the Warbirds over Texas, now that I have a very nice looking and easy to fly warbird.

Congrats Ron:

I wish I could be at WBOTX but I have a family reunion that weekend that's been planned for a year.

I have tried to explain what happens with the flaps, not much changes except it adds a lot of drag so the plane will slow down quickly. Perfect for short runways.

Good to hear Ron. I can't seem to find time to get mine finished. But glad to hear more inspiring news! You said your engine was a 3MM. Did you use the long or short cowl?
And how did your balance work out? My engine is almost 1 lb heavier than yours.

Good luck with it in the future,

Tim

The DLE55 has close to two gallons of fuel at 32:1 mix and its ripping the 22X8! Time to go to the 22X10, great engine and good price Retracts have worked flawlessly and the airframe is holding together against the high speed and vibration I just wish the tail wheel had a shock absorbing strut like robarts.

Great airplane
Jimmy

Thanks Tim. I used the long cowl. I have the choke servo and ing.battery pack mounted on the motor box. It takes about 10 oz. on the tail to lift the nose using the balance jig. You may have to mount flight pack aft of wing tube; however you can take as much as 12 oz. on the tail to lift the nose and still be in the c.g. range. Good luck. I may have some flight video after the warbird fly-in this week-end.

Ron

Yeah was planning flight pack on shelf added under turtledeck. I'll prolly be up to 1 lb heavier than some of you guys. Hope the wing can reasonably fly the weight. D0nt want a
floater warbird but dont want it to sink like a rock either.

But I'm using the short cowl, and my engine mount is actually 9/16 behind the original motorbox front. No standoffs with my engine. So will not be adding any dead weight to
front. Throttle servo and ignition batt....if I use one, will be on either side of the tank.

Just love the fact that more are being flown, and that Tom is doing a warbird and perhaps the Spitfire. Will definitely go for that too.

Good luck Ron,

Tim

Many warbirds this size come in at 28-30 pounds and still fly (not well, but they are manageable). Adding a pound I am sure will not even be noticeable.

Way to go on the maidens! How about some flight pics? I finally got flight # 7 today & no issues! Pretty windy & gusty so 2 bounce & goes with flaps followed by a no flap full stop. Video courtesy of Mike G, Thanks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZL7RLBCytc 8 flights now - I have noticed it is still slightly tail heavy so added another 3.5 to the nose. Currently about 8 oz added to the nose.
