I still find it hard to believe than anyone thinks $400 for a built, covered, flap equipped Corsair with all the hardware, decals, instructions, etc. is expensive! Having built a TF Corsair it blows my mind to think that there is any profit left in one of these at that price point no matter where in the world it may have been produced. Maybe it's just me.

I'm with ya, Chad. Tired of hearing all the whining about costs. It's an expensive hobby (most hobbies are), and like you seemed to imply: just about ANY ARF is a deal, when one considers how much the total cost of building a kit would be, AND the time it takes to build it.

But more significantly: I seriously doubt than ANYBODY is getting rich from the profits of this industry. For the most part, it is a love of the hobby that drives most into these business ventures, and as for the ones who actually assemble these ARFs: they are probably just trying to put food on the table for thier family, and maybe a roof over thier heads, no SUVs in their driveways.

But for those that are really looking for a better deal: keep in mind that Tower usually has a $50 off discount available on anything costing over $300. Couple that with free shipping, and you are down to $349.99 shipped to your front door.

I still scratch build my sport planes and they usually cost a lot more than a similar ARF. Top Flite quality speaks for itself.

In respect for others I would not use the word whineing , I am fortunite to be gainfully employed and I can enjoy the hobby at differant levels , but I know that some can not and perhaps their concern on cost is based on there own personal enconomic conditions .With double digit unemployment , I still thank God that I can enjoy this hobby at my own discretion and I hope that everyone has a chance to do the same .
I am sure our current leadership will continue to fund committies on how to study cost , fuel cost ect to improve the economy , because when you have no clue about how to generate income , you can only attemp to study it lol . So dont count on our pres to help fix things any time soon lol .
Enjoy the Hobby !!

I am sorry in case I offended some with my observations on rising costs of TF ARFs. It was not my intent. I thought this topic was about the Corsair ARF in all it's aspects!

Let me say one last thing (again), I look forward to owning this bird and I'm sure it will be worth every penny... I am just feeling the pinch right now. There was no harm in discussing the matter, was there?

Yes, now back to the Woohoo!

Firepower - No harm, I just didn't want to see the thread get bogged down. I too feel your pain! Living in Michigan and being a Public School Teacher, seems since the economy has gone sour, more and more of use are feeling it and the cost of gas is killing me!

Back to the Corsair!

So Corsair Jock or anyone else for that matter. Which "Particular" Corsair model is this???????s

What makes this so fun and interesting for me, is that I grew up around airplanes, and from and early age knew a lot about General Aviation and all airplanes in general. However, since I've started flying RC almost twenty years ago, the Warbird Bug has bitten me. It's been truly fascinating learning about the variations and how they improved the design. Currently I'm putting together the TF P40 and have been learning a lot about how that designed changed and improved.

It looks to be the F4U Corsair of Lt. J.G. Ira Kepford from US Navy VF-17 (they also were known as Jolly Rogers). They were Navy airmen stationed in different islands of the south pacific since the F4U at that time lacked the qualifications for use as a shipboard fighter. It is an F4U-1A Corsair that "Ike" Kepford was flying at that time with a 3 blade prop and the 3 tone color scheme used at the middle part of the hostilities in the Pacific.

$400 FOR a balsa / monokote arf is a rip no matter how you look at it. Tower coupons are no excuse. At this rate they would want 1000 for the giant scale

F4U-1A, which by the way: the kit has been all along (likewise the 'red box'), but Gold Edition kits have Korean War paint scheme and decal, which would be more appropriate for an F4U-4 OR F4U-5.

The canopy braces are what differentiate it from later models. Also, lack of hard points/ thingies to hang bombs, rockets, fuel tanks. Many F4U-1As were field equipped with the famed 'Brewster Bomb Rack', but there were no wing mounted ordinance mounts as on all later models.

It definately is an F4U-1A and represents the plane of Ira "Ike" Kepford. But after a closer look on the covering of the prototype I've noticed that TF has used an overall intermediate Blue and White paint scheme which is wrong and I hope that they will finally release the product on the 3 tone color scheme that was the true and correct in scale and detail. You see all these years TF has offered a very nice and scale outline so I hope that this time won't let us down.

After a brief search on the internet I have found 2 pictures of Kepford's F4U-1A and they are both in the 3 paint color scheme that I previously pinpointed. The second foto is courtesy of Clavework graphics.

Yep; like nearly ALL F4U-1As, it should have the tri-color scheme. I would REALLY like to see this model in an ARC version, because I'm thinking: if I get one, I'm gonna have to strip the covering off anyway and make it right. You simply cannot use iron on covering to duplicate a tri-color scheme: it NEEDS to be sprayed (painted) on.

Now if they had chosen to do a late war F4U-1D (or FG-1D): they could have used glossy blue iron on covering and still end up with an accurate representation (but the canopy braces would have to go).

Good discussion on the particular variant of the corsair.

I hope this is not to jumping ahead to far, but is there any interest in someone developing or planing or creating plans for a "semi-scale" retract for the tail wheel?

Reason being, I've followed some of the threads on Royal Corsair where the guy's have created some pretty nice tail wheels. I would be willing to pay for one.

I've committed myself to obtaining this ARF, due to the fact of how impressed I am with the TF P40 and the Sierra Retracts! I have a RCV 90SP that can swing a big old prop on this bird! Plus, I need a round engine airplane in my stable!

Any takers on the Tail wheel design! (CHAD Viech ???????????)

You're right on that! The late paint scheme was always one of my favorites! It reminds me the series Baa Baa Blacksheep which in the late '70s was my favorite together with the Rat Patrol A nice glossy dark blue paint scheme is the ones flown from Bunker Hill and the Marines training unit....

The 3 tone can be done as well like for example the H9 Hellcat. I agree it won't be the best outcome since it will be a monokote attempt but at least it will be accurate and for us the scale enthusiasts scale appearance is a must and not a bonus.

A few years back there was an extensive thread on building retractable tail wheel for a 1/8 Corsair. Now, we'll have to wait and see what if any modifications will have to be made if anyone wants to scale up their TF Corsair ARF a bit.
