A few years back there was an extensive thread on building retractable tail wheel for a 1/8 Corsair. Now, we'll have to wait and see what if any modifications will have to be made if anyone wants to scale up their TF Corsair ARF a bit.

Tail Wheel Build Thread 1/8

Michael,

I looked into the possibility of modifying the Robart tailwheel retract into a more "Corsair-esque" appearance like I did for my Hellcat but I don't really see any practical way of doing it. However, I may take a shot at building the one in the link above out of plywood rather than G10/PC board just to see if it would work. I built up one of the larger versions out of ply just as a test bed to see how the parts fit and I really think it might be strong enough to work in an airplane. I laminated the parts out of multiple layers of 1/32 plywood in order to achieve the strongest structure possible and the same concept just might work for the smaller 1/8 scale airplane. The reason for the plywood is, of course, that it can be easily laser cut and thus I could make a kit for it that would be very inexpensive. The only way to mass produce them out of G10 or PC board would be with a CNC router which I do not have access to. I'm really considering the purchase of one of these TF ARFs in order to bash it into something a bit more scale. It is the same scale and would make a great companion to my Hellcat. It won't happen fast but I will try and get a prototype built up just for kicks and if it works I would be glad to make them available. Stay tuned...

Chad,

That sounds like a plan! I've been a fan of your work for years and I agree if you could build these out of wood, it would be a nice modification. I could build one out of wood too, but if you could kit the tail wheel that would be better for me, as I'm in "Full Dad" mode most of the time. So, a kit would help me out immensely.

Firepower R/C -> RE: I Saw it! TF 60 Size Corsair ARF!!!!! (4/27/2011 3:34 PM)

Chad,

I actually have built 2 retractable tail wheels out of lasered ply and a little styrene plastic, and it works great! Mine wasn't for a Corsair, but for a P-47. Even made a little kit, but never offered them. [:o] You can even fiberglass certain parts to get more strength if needed. I say go for it, it will be way cool! You will do it justice, I'm sure.

mimoore67 -> RE: I Saw it! TF 60 Size Corsair ARF!!!!! (4/27/2011 3:48 PM)

Firepower! Looks like you might want to market that!

Firepower R/C -> RE: I Saw it! TF 60 Size Corsair ARF!!!!! (4/27/2011 4:07 PM)

Well, I don't want to step on Chad's toes. I would love to see him do the Corsair tail wheel! I just wanted to cement his resolve a little on the matter! I'll see if I can find a pic or 2 and maybe we can start another thread on the subject.

Okay, there you have it! Chad you start tooling up! I'll check with my Brother-n-Law and see if he has a CNC Router, in his Tool and Die Shop!

You can add me to the list if you start producing a tail wheel set-up. [:D]

Here is a quick pic of my early tail wheel CAD drawings, just to see how I laid them out. These 2 are for smaller, sport models... I'm sure Chad can do better.

Top Flite now has a web page devoted to this ARF. More Pics shown. Manual link listed but not working.

Interesting. The wingtip profile (as viewed from above) appears unchanged from the kit: not rounded enough at leading edge. Likewise with the rudder.

I've got a 1/8 scale fiberglass fuselage (NICE!!!) in need of a wing: maybe I'll buy just the wing, strip it down, correct the wingtips, then 'glass and paint, and mate it too the 'glass fuselage.

On another note: those oil cooler/ wing inlets appear to be a HUGE improvement over kit version: I'll have to order a few sets of them if they become available.

Also looks like there is plenty of room to mount a tailwheel retract, if one desires.

mimoore67 -> RE: I Saw it! TF 60 Size Corsair ARF!!!!! (5/1/2011 3:27 PM)

I like the fact that the lower half of the fuselage is removable, which should make easier installation of a retract in the tail.

I'll be seeing my Brother-n-law today and I'll see if he has a CNC Router to cut the parts!

No Luck on the CNC Router! So, if you want your in Brass you'll have to cut it yourself.

Chad, are you interested in "Kitting" the tailwheel retract in wood?

Ron101 -> RE: I Saw it! TF 60 Size Corsair ARF!!!!! (5/2/2011 3:37 PM)

Looks great to me!
I love my Top Flight birds, I've owned almost every ARF out there and the Top Flights are hands down the best!

The P-47 is a dream to fly, I'm sure this one will be the same.

I hope to get a prototype cut and assembled in the next couple of weeks Michael. Then I will probably need to find somebody with a Corsair to test it out for me. Assuming it proves to be durable enough to get the job done I would be happy to make up some kits for whomever may want one. Stay tuned...

mimoore67 -> RE: I Saw it! TF 60 Size Corsair ARF!!!!! (5/2/2011 4:56 PM)

Sounds good Chad!

Chad Veich -> RE: I Saw it! TF 60 Size Corsair ARF!!!!! (5/5/2011 12:42 AM)

Well, it's a start anyway. Still need to gather up some brass tube and other miscellaneous items but these are the plywood components. I'm sure it will go through several variations but, with any luck, a workable solution will be achieved.

Chad, that looks awesome! Thanks so much for taking the lead on this!

I see wonderful things happening.

Smashing! Absolutely smashing.

handyman 220 -> RE: I Saw it! TF 60 Size Corsair ARF!!!!! (6/28/2011 2:00 AM)

Just an update on the Corsair, delivery at Tower is now late August. [:o] I'm sure it will be worth the wait, TF does produce an awesome airplane!!

oriole -> RE: I Saw it! TF 60 Size Corsair ARF!!!!! (6/28/2011 5:50 PM)

As of right now... Late Sept. per the Tower Website.

handyman 220 -> RE: I Saw it! TF 60 Size Corsair ARF!!!!! (6/28/2011 11:54 PM)

Looks like it will be a winter build. [:)]

I've built at least 10 Corsair tail wheels for myself and others, all out of G-10. The ply will work in my opinion, especially for the 1/8 and would probably be a better solution to save weight. I'm just trying to help here, but I would not recommend using lightening holes in the circled part in the picture, all the other parts look fine.

US185Damiani -> RE: I Saw it! TF 60 Size Corsair ARF!!!!! (6/29/2011 2:48 AM)

Hey Luke!

Welcome back to the Universe!  Long time sir!

Avaiojet -> RE: I Saw it! TF 60 Size Corsair ARF!!!!! (6/29/2011 2:53 AM)

Nice tail wheel assembly!

The TF Corsair, be nice if they would do the same at 55" or so. I have the H(, NIB and I believe it's about the same size?

Still, with working flaps, it's a winner. Hope the flaps are hinged correctly.
