This may be nothing new, but after reading the prop info on SUPERCOOL RACING PROPELLERS, I had a thought.

The thickness and airfoil of the tip seems to be of paramount importance.

It would seem that soaking a wood prop in thin CA would effectively create a composite prop of exceptional hardness. It could be done before final shaping, and still be effective. You would have have a much tougher material to file and sand on, but you could get it much thinner.

Is this being done? Or am I out in left field?

Rocket Ray Brown once told me that the tip doesn't much matter. It's just along for the ride. Most of the work done by the prop is done by stations 4, 5, and 6.

This theory seems to be verified by props that were once being sold by a Greg Edmunds. The tips were just simply cut at a 14 degree angle, de-fuzzed and go race. These props were fast too.

Having said all that, I prefer to bolt on the APC cf Q40 prop and go have fun.

Cheers,

Randy Smith

Hi Guy,

If you take notice of the original posting date for my message, it was from April of last year ...

Since the CF prop is now legal, wood will not be on the front of any of my planes.

Don,
Easy buddy, just pokin' a bit of fun. I'm glad that the CF props will be allowed this year, and I'm happy to hear you'll be running Q-40s this year. Perhaps the CF prop ruling will open the doors a bit for the class. My fear is that the ART of prop shaping will quickly go the way of the albatross, Formula 1, Q-15s and Rossi powered quickies.
