What can I tell you. It sucked spraying the primer with this litle airbrush one inch at a time.  Can´t complain about the airbrush it has done the work with honors.

Already ordered a mini gun to do the paint job.

cheers,

Juan

Like I read in another forum " this project is like watching grass grow"

After christmas started preparing for painting masking all the lines. A weekend working intemitently.

This weekend prepared my garage for painting. Had to put some anchors in the ceiling  to hold some wire to help in the painting.

Got the oportunity to try my new gun a eastwood minimgun. Is not a sata but worked ok. The best part id the deckups which worked like a dream. Is tedius cleaning the gun or airbrush.

So some pictures of painting

You are suppsed to pull of all the paper and masking tape before the paint cures. Dont't know how they do it with out ruining the paint jop. Messed up a good work in a a wing panel doing it. Also got some greasy fingers fingers spots.

The goodthing is that can be fixed.

This is fuselage after striping paper and masking tape.

Being this my first paint job with a auto paint gun and a big jet model I'm happy with the results.

The paint used is omni ppg one coat. PU

cheers

Juan

That's beautiful, Juan.

Don't feel bad about taking your time- I started my Phantom last spring and it's only gotten this far. (90mm EDF Dan Savage model. I'm doing it as the first F4H-1 that flew in May, 1958.)

I won't be able to afford the radio until maybe May, so it won't fly for awhile. (I'm getting a Futaba 8J and a GYA 430 rudder gyro for it.)

 Thanks for your coments Doug,

Aplied the color red today. Pending only them blue and metalic grey for for canopy.

Since his color is only on the bottom and canopy frame and motor bay used a pascche single action airbrush. The hobbicio airbrush uses a ruber oring that does not like lacker solvents and starts spitting paint. This new one uses a plastic intead of oring and is esier to clean.

My wife was not happy with the big mess I did last time painting with the new gun. Think 2/3 of paint go elsewere and not the object intended to paint. So this time they were not so happy of me painting in the garage.

To Help with over spray You can make a simple spray booth out of some plastic, wood strips, adhesive backed Velcro, 2 furnace filters and a box fan. I made 4 = 8' X 8' plastic panels attach to 2 strips of wood on each end. Roll up the panel and make a strap out of velcro and attach to the top side of the wood strip. I screwed each panel wood strip with the velcro strap to the ceiling to form a 8' X 8' box. Then I put velcro on the plastic at the end of each panel to make a seal. I traced an outline of the furnace filter on each side of the plastic panels then attached the velcro inside the traced line. Then I cut out the plastic inside the velcro box and apply more velcro to the furance filter and stuck it to the plastic.
I then stuck the box fan to the to the outside of the plastic with velcro. While I painting I kept a spay bottle with water and sprayed the furnace filter this helped to catch the paint I also sprayed the floor to keep paint off of it. Just make sure all power cords are hung up out of the way of the water. Then when you are done just remove the fan and filters pull apart the velcro and roll up the panels then secure them with the velcro straps. I'm going to make another spray booth that will be 10' X 10' so I can put a table in to mix paint and use as a work surface in a few weeks I can takes some picture of it if you want. I estimated the cost should be about $80.00 to build getting everything from a walmart store.

Hope this helps

Doug

This time can  say I´m  on the final leg to finish this plane.

To manage over spray this time put more plastics, and sprayed neerer to the wall for paint to sick there and not all over the place.

Took sevaral hours of sunday to cover with paper  all the areas already painted. Was to late to paint sunday so this paint job was done monday.

Very happy with the results even knowing I messed up in several places.  Will fix it up later.

Not yet. Weather still cold and very windy. Waiting for some connectors from Tower Hobbies, also.

This bird is almost ready to maiden.

The painting, color sanding and  polishing has ended. Need to confess that paid for the color sand and polishing of airplane.
This weeken glued the ailevators and ruders, and did all the links from servo to surfaces.

I'm not happy of how the instructions tell you to mount servos for rudders and ailevators. They are not 90 degrees with hinge line so you must use  ball links to compensate. I noticed this to late. If  have to build this again will modify servo location to be 90 dgrees with hinge line.

Yesterday conected rx to wiring harness and dialed in tx all movemts of flying surfaces. Did a test run of airplane infront of my house. My watt meter burned just by connecting to batteries. So could not measure peak watts and amps. I suposely balanced fan using only 6s battery but this time on 12 s found a harmonics vibration at mid throtle. It is scary pushing the fan to 100% throtle for the first time.

Only need to glue the rx battery to the nose of plane to balance properly.

Think will maiden next week.

Cheers

Juan
