Hi guys,

is there an appreciable weight difference between these BV models?

I like the ARF OK but I am not a huge fan of those flex hinges, and I like the white arfs and there is no discount for a white electra, hence the question.

thanks in advance

HI Matt, My kit Electra weighs 15.8 pounds RTF with 12S EV2, Dual 123s, BV wheels and brakes, Duro struts and mechanical retracts. Plane is glassed and painted. I dont know the weights for the ARFs but Dustin said that I was good. The plane flies wonderfully. Scotty
BTW where the hell you been, missing you around.

Miss you guys too. I have been working like an insect, and what little free time I have I prefer to spend with my kids. Hope to get something flying soon, Conner can fly the Radian a bit on with buddy box (we night flew it last night), so he will probabaly move to the Reaction when I get it done (my wife was 9 months pregnant when I got the kit, Conner is 6 now and will probabaly be in high school by the time I finish the plane!)

I really know jack squat about these electrics and the $$ are big. I need to use something my buddies are using and can help me with, I know Gregg has a BV set up and a couple of the guys at the field do too.

The online crowd fight about these things more than turbines! Gotta get the straignt scoop from guys in the real world, no time to run the online BS filter!!

Later,

EDIT: hence the original request about the Electra. I have never been disappointed with a BV purchase. yes the $$ sting a bit, but when you open the box and look at the plans and the manual it all clicks.

Hi Matt

I am considering an Electra as well, and will probably purchase the “kit” version.

I have built 2 Bandits in my time, a Classic Balsa Bandit, and a Super Composite Bandit. The Balsa construction is by far the lightest. It is however a bit more fragile, not as ding resistant, and probably not as strong overall as the Composite surfaces. I think the ARF surfaces are a bit lighter then the composites, but nothing is as light as a built up structure.

Of course you save $1000 with the Electra “kit” version, so if you don’t mind a bit of building, and painting, I think it is good value.

Like you I know zip about electrics, which is another reason to start with an Electra. These models should be plug and play.

Roger

Hi Matt,

I've built 2 kit versions of the Electra.  The first one was finished in a camo scheme using exterior latex paint.  It weighed 15 pounds.  The second one was finished with Flite Metal and automotive color changing paint and had gloss clear coat.  It weighed 16.5 pounds.  Both of them had duro struts, brakes, BVM aluminum wheels, aluminum main retracts (aluminum versions of the plastic mains) and the BVM aluminum nose retract.  I don't know what the arf version weighs.

Matt, I have put together 3 Electra arfs and I presently building a Sabre arf . There is not a better electric jet out there! The arfs require a bit if building but they can be built very light. The skin hinging works perfectly. They fly great!

matt i use all BV stuff, but you can use spring airs or his blue gear and i always wanted to try the e-flite gear cause if you take the wings off a lot like i do dealing with the mechanical gear it's a little bit of a pain.

BV wire struts have been good for me so far, it flies on the original 4010 with a reduced timing cc110

thanks on the scheme, if anyone wants my artwork let me know i can send it in a .pdf

I had a feeling you were using the mechanical gear, I remember these frames from a gen 2 viper I flew. I also used those really nice wire struts he used to sell. very high quality. I figured this was about as light as you can get.

I notice he sells these older style retracts with carbon frames, the last set I used in a bandit had aluminum frames.

EdIT: are those graphics taped off or do you cut stencils?

What's up Matt!!

I have a non arf built and painted by Tam with a TJ 120 in it. Flys very light and hauls the mail with the 12S set up. All JR spec servos, mechanical bv gear with retrofit air cylinders and wire struts.

Great Banditesque performance for Prado weekend flying.

Give me a ring if you have any questions.

Doug

Hi Doug,

I am so out of the loop I did not know Tam had a new fan, I did a search I will jump over to his forum for more info. I forgot I have a new 1/2 built BVM viper I could put together if I can get batteries to fit.

See you soon,

Matt the Viper is a bit tighter for batteries so you might consider a 10S setup. Also the mechanical gear works great.
I revised the main gear pushrod setup and constructed turnbuckles using a 2 mm losi turnbuckle mounted in a carbon tube.
You simply need to space the ball on the retract arm with 4 Number 2 washers.

thanks for the feedback, I was going to ask someone what is the largest pack I can get into a Viper.

being unfamiliar with this stuff I am not sure what the tradee offs are. I know one thing, a plane that can only fly 3 minutes is a drag.

the original 5000mah TP saddle packs barely fit they bulged the thrust tube a bit

if you can swing it $$ get the electra.... trust me.

the viper flies awesome but you cant glide it around and you have to build lite

Thanks for the advice, would those be the 10S 5000 packs?

Sorry I was not clear this is an ultra viper not sure if that makes a difference on the battery questions.

yes two 5s saddles, but you could squeeze a 2s on top of the duct, i don't know if the ultra fuse is any bigger
