After a long build break I had a few requests for updated build pics. Going to stuff it, then gut it for bodywork and paint.

This is the hidden bolt hole for the nose cone. a carbon tube guides the screw.

This is where the screw protrudes.

Great work!

I see you are using that plastic air vavle yellow gives with the kits. I was hesistant on using the same one on my yellow F22 but I did anyway for the brakes and the dang thing has been perfect. It will hold air for over a month!

Brian,

Looks good. Glad to see you back on it. Have you purchased engine yet? Kingtech has the K180 now 41 pound of push basically same money. It will fly great on either one.

Give me a call when you have a minute.

Yeah, I like the yellow valves. They do hold presure for months. I am using them for speed brake, canopy. For retracts and gear doors I am usivg BVM high flows with jmp air junction block and large T's. Shouldn't have any problems with the big gear and glennis wheels with that setup. I think at this point I am sold on the Behotec 220. With my drag I want a little more power, but I know the value of low wing loading. The big Beo is 3.5 pounds 50 pounds of thrust and a 180 size can. All for a really good price, and 50 hour service life. Spool time is super fast on the Beo's. 4.5 sec from idle to full. I know thats a moot point on the 18, but still impressive.

I made them out of aluminum peel ply from McMaster carr. They're a little shiny now, but when they are a little weathered they will look really nice. I did it to my starfire and I really like the way it turned out.

Well all I will say is I flew my old Yellow F18 with Oly at 50 lbs for 11 years. I think you will like the big block.

Edge,

Lots of guys flew these on big blocks and loved them. I've had some stick time on the big blocks, but I've also had some stick time on the small blocks and, for my money, I'd go with the small/powerful any day. The performance difference between a 36 pound engine (K-170, for example) and an Oly is a throatier sound and a few MPH on the top end. For that, though, you've got a lot more landing weight and landing speed. IMHO, it's not worth the trade off when you can do sweet, LIGHT landings that are easier on your gear (and the airframe in general). The sweetest landings I've ever seen were on a K-170. Like buttah....

Question, are those slotted flaps part of the kit or is that a VERY SICK mod?

Shaun, The Behotec 220 is only 3.5 pounds. Its the best of both worlds. The aileron hinges are an option. They are not for the feint of heart to install though. There is a decent amount of geometry and "Figuring" going on to make them work right. Also There is a big gap in the down position, so Hinge gap covers almost need to be there to make them look finished. Those are an even bigger headache. When done though, they're awesome!!!!!! Shaun (YellowAircraft) here can fix you up with a set.

Here's my hidden latch system I came up with. The first pic is the lock for the large hatch. The bent bar is accessed through the small hatch above the tank. it simply pushes rearward to capture the large hatch which has carbon dowels to hold the back. The front small hatch is then inserted with dowels and the front I envision will be captured by rods that are forced rearward by the canopy closing. This will make for absolutly no holes to secure any hatches. The blocks glued to the fuse are to keep the bar from pulling all the way out and falling inside the fuse. The system works really well.

This one shows the bar sticking through.

Here's the order that shows how all the dowels, locks work.

More fun stuff. With my new helper in the background

Brian,

Neat stuff, man! Did you use the foam wing cradles to help you align the ailerons/flaps for hinging? I'm considering going the scale hinge route on my next one. I also love your hatching! The pics make it look like your wings aren't glassed yet. Is that an illusion? Also, did you have to shave much off of the tops of the spars to avoid dihedral?

Wings are not glassed. I did use the shucks to keep everything straight. I also added balsa hard points. It was alot of extra work, but I would rather not worry later. Charles said it would be fine, and I think we all know he's a genious, but in the end its my mental sanity I have to deal with. I would like to have the time to blueprint the installation for others in the future. Even the aileron gaps have to be just right to have sufficient deflection, but not have so much gap that if you ran hinge gap covers they would not cover them. I also had to shave just a slight bit of the top of the spars for the correct anhedral. It wasn't much at all though.

Brian,

Thanks. Interesting in the spars. I had to shave a ton off the tops so as not to end up with dihedral. Yeah, good move on the hard points. I'm seriously considering doing this stuff on my next build. Maybe you could talk a little about the wires that actuate the gap cover? What size? What did you do for a sheath?
