I've got an old Goldberg Ultimate Bipe...seen one fly with a YS120. Needless to say it had stupid power...and I liked it :P So. With the ill availability of the YS engines where I'm located, which would you go with. Don't get me wrong, I can still get YS engines...just not easily. Oh and last I heard the YS 120 was discontinued...so will that new 110 be just as good? Thanks for your help.

The LHS owner has the Goldberg Ultimate as does my brother and they both said the engine of choice was the YS 91 because it was lighter than the other 120 sizi engines and had the same power AHHHH The engine of choice right up to the point the 110 came out, about the same size as the 91 but gobs of power, I would go for the YS

The YS120 is a monster in the CGM Ultimate, but one pays the price in extra weight. It still flies nicely, but the extra tail weight, even with the battery jammed under the tail, is necessary for 3D flying.

Now, the 110 will save all of that extra weight. You will have almost a half pound advantage with the battery mounted in an easily accessed location and a great CG.

Now for the best part. The 110 has about 95% power of the YS120FZ, and all of the power of the YS120NC. It will turn a 16-8 at about 9400 on Coolpower 30%. I recommend a 15-8 for break-in a little bit rich. I also highly recommend a gallon of running on the bench, or, if you prefer, you might get to practice deadsticks for a while. The big advantage of bench running is that you can burn that gallon at full throttle, a more effective break-in than puttering around the sky at a quarter throttle. In the air you can expect full break-in closer to the five gallon mark because of the very limited use of higher throttle settings...you just will not need the power unless you are pulling out of a torque-roll, and with the YS110, you can pull out just fine at half power. Bench the motor....just do it. You will be extremely happy you did.

I have a YS 120 FZ in my Ultimate, but it is heavy at 10.75 lb. Still goes well, but I am thinking of getting another and rebuilding far lighter (sub 9 lb if possible) and would go with the YS 110.

to get it to balance, the rudder servo is under the stab, the rest of the radio gear is under the pilot (accessed through a hatch in the bottom of the fuz) and I still have two oz of lead at the back.

I don't know where the weight is coming from. My CGM Ultimate with YS120NC, 6.0 battery, standard sized servos and extra weight on the tail came in about 8.3 pounds. With the YS110, under eight pounds should be fairly easy to achieve with 7.5 being a good and realistic goal.

At 8.3 I have done every maneuver possible to test the airplanes strength including flying through one row of trees only to land in the next row. After 600-700 flights, it is starting to loosen up here and there, but the structure remains sound and solid.

This particular Ulitmate has so much untapped potential. Enlarging the ailerons would be a wonderful idea, the elevator and rudder are quite sufficeint already. I can harrier around all day long but getting it to roll is not happening.

Even on the ARF, enlarging the airlerons is no real big deal. The covering job is simple (blue). Remove the covering, get some aileron stock of appropriate size, run the wing through the band saw, cap and apply the strip of sheeting and cut some holes in the new ailerons to lighten things up and recover. About a days worth of work to double the airplane's potential. The originals are very effective until you get into 3D speed and then they become mush.

I used two engines on my CGM Ultimate:
an OS120FT-II and a OS120FS-SP. I changed to the SP because the vertical power wasn't sufficient. It's really a fantastic plane to fly. Be sure the engine doesn't quit, otherwise it wil drop like a stone.
The last combination is in my photo gallery.
