Well Dan I have to agree with you on the extra glue. I have 4 models from cmpro, the manufacturer of the Katana, and have used as much as 3 oz of super glue in each plane. Most of the glue is medium to thick to fill gaps etc and have had no problems with any of my cheap modeks since i started this practice. By the way the models are Katana 140, Giles 140, Texan 160 and Transair C160.

Well, I called GSP today and talked to Chuck and Tran and explained what happened with the gear ripping out reasonbly and nicely. And Chuck's reply to me was "Sorry, can't help you out. I'm between a rock and a hard place. You are the rock and China Model is the hard place." Hmm, not what I was wanting to hear at ALL, after flying this ARF 2X. I guess I learned a hard lesson today.

And, if anyone is interested, the wings, cowl, gear, and canopy are for sale cheap. Contact me if you are interested. They're in perfect shape.

Why not repair the gear and keep flying the plane? I did the same thing to my Katana two years ago on the first flight and the plane is still flying today. You just need to do a little reenforcing in the fuse and install a traditioal type gear block, its not that hard.

Hi Dave, just wondering how your Giles 140 performs? As I'm about to maiden mine at the weekend and am losing my bottle as I've heard talk of tip-stalling, unrecoverable spins etc. - it's freakin' me out man!!

Well Pete This model is a dream It does positive and negative spins like a bought one. To recover just apply opposite rudder only and wait it just drops its nose then release all inputs, at idle of course, then fly away. Mine has a smoke system a dubro anti vibration engine mount ,Magnum 180 and two 32 oz tanks. Plus the model has been prizmatiqued and clear coated in high solid PPG clear so it carries a bit of weight whilst full and you can land tail wheel first without any signs of tipstalling. The carbon fibre under carriage is a bit weak though.

Thanks for the reply dave. Yours looks great with the smoke, and of course there's plenty of room for it.

I'm using an MVVS 1.60 and an 18 x 6 wood prop which seems to have plenty of grunt. My all-up weight (dry) is 11.5 lbs.

I'm surprised at your comments about the U/C though as it looks pretty substantial.

Good to hear it flies OK - cant wait to get mine up now!

It would be interesting to do a study here. I wonder how many of the planes with structural problems had been sitting it the sun for a while and getting hot? A friend of mine once "Hot Glued" some upholstery in his car. After it sat in the sun for a while he came out to discover everything had fallen down in a gooey mess.

I'm building mine with a converted Kioritz 23.6cc engine. Mine is an older model I bought a couple of years ago. I'm going to reinforce the wing, and reglue everything I can get to. Even though mine is an older model, it came with a sheet suggesting that you reglue all important areas like landing gear mount, motor mount, etc. Had anyone here done this and still had problems????

My Katana, bought in 2003 has about 40 flights on it.I only have an OS 120 up front, but have flown many high G sequences. The airframe seems solid, never glued anything, gear is on solid,I usully carry it by the gear.I give it a full inspection every few flights.besides the well done but difficult to work with covering,i have no complaints.OK the wing spring are a pain, but she flies very nicely and everyone at the field loves it in the air.I now own a Giles from them too and it is getting the OS 160 and better electronics.

I guess the best combo for this plane would be some 160 2C or perhaps a SA180 ... something like the Moki 210 would be stupid right?

I was very please with the performance and economy of my OS 160 on the Katana. I would put that motor on there again if I was going to fly another one.

I just picked up one of these and out of curiosity weighed all the parts on an accurate digital scale. Total weight of the as-supplied parts was 8 lbs-10 oz. A few of the smaller stuff was still wrapped in plastic so there might be an ounce or two less. After reading the posts on this a/c I'm really looking forward to getting it in the air. Going to use a YS 120 SC since I have it.
