Anyone build the elevator/stabilizer to be removeable? What technique you used? Just a screw on top each tail through the aluminium rod?

Well on my world model velox, this is how the main wing is secured on top of having additional pin clip at the wing root TE into the fuse side.

If anyone is interested, I am cleaning house and I have a set of old style wings that have been strengthened but never flown and I have an updated pair of wings that have a ding in the wingtip for sale. Also have a cowl that was mounted but never flown as well as a new longer style wingtube and a pair of gear. I also have a fuse that needs the top hatch repaired but dont want to ship the whole plane. If anyone is interested in making an offer on any of the above shoot me an email with KATANA in the subject line to WarrenM@mail.com.

    Thanks,
    Warren

I am just about ready to maiden my Katana. It has an OS 160 w/Bisson pipe, original fuel tank (all the way in the nose) and most of the original stuff. The wings are the new type, with 26" tube. My question to you is that is the best CG for this plane - the CG that the plane flyes the best.
I have read all the posts (55) and the CG varies a bit from plane to plane. I don't intend to do 3D type flying, just regular pattern type. Please help with your experience before I'll find the hard way.

    Thanks.

    dc.

if i knew how to search a thread the answer is probably already posted.
    But sisnce i don't;

I stsrated on one recently. The landing gear has some to be desired. Wheel bolts too small for the tires. and the shouldered part of the bolts is too long. So in the trash goes the metric stuff. I usually throw all the metric hardware away. The instructions show the hole pattern with the wider holes to the front. But then the pants don't line up with the gear and that also rakes the gear forward. Looks like it's too far forward. Should it be raked back? It is still way ahead of the C/G. If I put it on raked back all lines up ok.
    Thaks for any help.

Thanks; but I can't tell from that angle. If it was straight from the side would work. Any others out there with a new one?
How did the stock hardware hold up? I may still go with all standard stuff yet.

Finished building mine today and after I was done I weighed the plane. I am very dissapointed and a little surprised. Mine came out a hefty 14 1/2 pounds. I am powering mine with a OS 1.60. I tried to build it as light as I could; graphite gear, foam wheels, NIMH battery, micro receiver, pull-pull rudder so I wouldn't have to add any additional weight to balance. The only thing I could have done differntly than I did was to use a LIPO battery. This is my first plane of this size and I didn't want to soak alot of money in the first one, I wanted to see if I will have any issues with a plane this size when it comes to transporting it and storage.

I'm also about to maiden the Katana. I go the gasser route with Zenoah G26. Even at this setup, its still a tad tail heavy and I need some 8-10oz at the firewall to balance the plane. This is crazy! I wonder how those of you with glow 160-180 manage to balance without some major dead weight if one were to keep all 3servos at the back.

Only solution I see for glow is move the rudder to center for pull pull. I maybe able to put the rx pack a bit more forward but I need to keep them at least 12-15 in away from the magneto for clean n non interference operation.

I'm also wondering the best CG. Its really varies on the last 55 pages. The instruction said 150mm away from wing root and then 110-130mm from LE. This place the CG just slight ahead of the wing rod.

Is that what you guy fly at?

This thread suddenly seems so quiet, what happen to the regulars?

The newer Katanas are heavy over weight pigs. I believe the thread has become quiet because no one wants this plane anymore.
I have two of the older Katanas and they weigh 11.5 pounds and I thought that was heavy at the time. They were assembled stock out of the box and have no CG problems with their OS 1.60 engines installed.
CG problems are often caused by using heavy servos in the tail.

Are they considered such a pig? What about the other similar size plane? I think mine is at about 13lbs with the gasser. Even the Black horse Katana reviewed here in the RCU is at 12lbs glow.

I couldn't be happier with my Katana, and I think it's around 12.5 to 13 lbs. It's one of the best aerobatic planes I've owned and I have been modeling for 30 years. The thing is, I am not into "3D"; just normal aerobatics. The 3D guys need very light planes for their antics.

Not to offend anyone, but when I see a full size Pitts or Extra, or whatever, hover like a helicopter 6 inches off the deck, then maybe I'll get into it.

BTW, my c.g. is at the factory recommended setting, and for me it's perfect. The snap rolls are so fast it's unbelieveable, but the airplane is not sensitive in pitch and lands like a feather. Lomcovaks are super. Very little down elevator needed in inverted flight, good knife edge.

    Just my 2 cents worth...

    Aw man!
I had this plane awhile back and loved it! I had a G26 in mine and it flew great! Now I'm missing it all over again.....('cause this thread is back).

I AM a 3D pilot, but I never used my Katana for that. It was just great for point and slow rolls, stall turns, etc. Simply beautiful traditional aerobatics.

I've got lots of really nice 3D planes and do that all the time. But those who can't appreciate a 4 point roll done well remind me of those who go home cranky if they don't catch 50 trout in a day.

I never crashed my Katana, it just got a little too ugly after awhile. So I retired it. Now I think I need another.....

Why would you limit the FUN you could be experiancing to what someone in a full size plane can do?
This is not a full size plane....
If realism is your cup of tea, then take that )S160 out and put a Super Tigre 60 in the plane...

And be assured... if the guys in the full size plane COULD hover 6" off the deck... THEY WOULD!!!

Where do you think Wayne Handley was headed with the Turbo Raven...
I think that plane was about 750 hp (3000 lbs static thrust'ish) and about 2300 pounds ready for show!!!!

Break out of the Paradigm man... the 3D thing is FUN!!!!
