Congratulations Dennis, nice to see another P20 airframe in the mix, will have to knuckle down and get my L39 finished.

Ever since I 'Finished' the mig I have not been happy with the amount of movement I had on the wings. The main problem being that there was no spar going through from one wing to the other and also the fus was moving at the top. Although my test pilot felt it was fine I was not completely happy so I set to an made a removable 'brace' across the top. In the pics below this can be seen easily together with my 10 min production bodged up fod screen that I have to say worked very well and will stay in place until I can get a propper one or indeed make a better one from the same mesh this is made from.

Also for anyone thinking of building this mig I would strongly recommend glueing the wings to the fus and using the brace as in the pics below. This method will make an excellent wing joint and after all is wired up etc I think it is quite unlikely that you will ever actually remove the wings

Hi Dennis Why not make the brace archedand then it would clear the turbine. There is lots of room under the hatch. Eric

The straight brace clears the turbine by a lot. Also I have the cockpit kit and it would hit the bottom of this. The flat brace does an excellent job

Well she has had her second outing and I managed to get a few flying shots. The weather was good for flying but was very dull and an incredibly grey sky with the sun in front of us so the pics are not the best.

The Mig 15 however flys very stable and the P20 seems a perfect combination. According to my test pilot 3DFlip it is very easy to fly and easier than the Habu 32. On landing full flap seems to work very well and on the two landings on grass she has not bounced to any degree. Takeoff is fine and the plane gives the impression like most migs that she would glide forever.

The silver colour against the grey sky makes her hard to see so sadly i think I will have to put some high viz on the wing tips

Sorry I never got any video I cant find my charger

Good job Dennis.

Just out of academic interest what did the overall weight turn out to be in the end with fuel, batteries and every thing else on board, would give us a good idea what our conversions should come out to.

After the two landings which were very gentle indeed and a bit of taxi testing I noticed that one of the retracts was loos and the mount had come unglued. I decided to beef the mounts up with plywood and epoxt. There is a ply rib each side of the retract hole so this was quite easy. All I did was to scrape away some of the polystyrene and then cut short lengths of ply and make a thick in effect box between the ribs using 30 min epoxy. It is now very strong indeed. It will have added about 1 oz but you have got to have a good retract mount

By the wonders of modern science, a pice of downloadable software from jetcat and a cable We were able to get this graph of various perameters from the flight of the P20 in the Mig. Not sure what to do with it but Seems sort of cool the first time you get it

What size wheels did you wind up using? I think you mentioned 55mm for the mains. How about the nose wheel?

Correct they were 55 mm on the mains and 40 mm on the nose wheel. They were simple foam tires with quite large plastic rims

Great job Dennis! I follow this thread since the beginning and can´t wait for the first video to enjoy the sound too.

My MIG-15 is still on it´s way from HK to Germany and it would be very helpful to know the thickness of the wing in the area of the retracts. Better to say: how deap the slots are to see if one of my existing retracts will fit or which one makes sense to order.

The bird will be fitted with a ducted fan only but with retracts. I think there will be not enough space for an additional air tank so I´m looking for electric retracts which are strong enough for grass operations with a fast landing (?), 7-8 pound jet.

Thanks in advance and best wishes
HJ

Dennis,

Those 15-25 retracts, I didn't think they were designed for 7-9 lb models?

Thanks Dennis. I´ve seen in your previous posts that you choosed the eflite retracts and that they fitted well, proved by the photos.

To bee honest, I don´t trust too much in the plastic housings and will try full metal retracts. If neccessary I will enlarge the fitting area in length and brightness. So the thickness of the wing will be the critical limit for alternative retracts.
If it´s not too much effort, please could measure how deap the slot is to the upper side of the wing sheeting?

Regards

The model is more in the 6 - 7 lb range and they are fine. The same ones people are putting in the Habu 32 and that is a similar weight

Very good with actual airframes flown... not only talked about. the AUW sounds high, still looking at your logged data you do not use full throttle much.

I'm still having trouble decideing my next plane of choice. I will keep the Baiojet this season then change it for somethng else. Maybe one of these 90mm planes would be worth trying out.

I got the word a 90mm EDF Epic Victory(62"-ish wingspan) is comeing out, that one would be nice too hehe.

My pilot 3dflip was and usually is quite conservative on the throttle and uses it to great effect. This Mig being of quite a large wing area flys very well at lower throttle settings.

Having had just 3 flights now this plane is very good on fuel
